  1. I started looking into FLAS fellowships recently and I have some questions. 1. Do most graduate schools offer these fellowships? 2. Because many admission decisions won't be made until after the deadline, it seems that most first year grad students won't get one of these. Is that accurate? 3. How, generally speaking, do they work? 4. If awarded a FLAS fellowship, is this in lieu of or in addition to other funding provided by the university? I apologize if this has been covered in another thread. Was just curious about additional sources of funding.
  2. As far as timelines go, many schools are behaving differently this year than they did in previous years. Not sure what that means in any way, just a trend I've noticed. For example, Minnesota last year began notifying people this week. This year there have been no reports. Now since it's self reporting that may be those people already accepted haven't posted yet. We just don't know what meaning, if any, to attach to different patterns.
  3. Congratulations to the new acceptances at Columbia, Chicago and Texas.
  4. Mine envy was more about the funding thread. Some schools give very generous offers.
  5. on the main forum page is a tab for results. You can search by discipline and see where people have self-reported their acceptances.
  6. so, I guess now is not the time to start getting grad program envy and begin exploring other programs. There are just so many professors I want to work with!
  7. That's an incredibly apt simile kblooms. It does certainly feel that way at times.
  8. Welcome ellebe! You can join the anxiety crew.
  9. Stillalive do you have insider info on Indiana (or was it illinois you meant)?
  10. I'm terribly jealous of those of you who have heard from your programs. It's been radio silence with the exception of Penn State. I want to hear something!
  11. I had a similar experience. I received an email reply from 90% of those I contactef, many saying they'd be happy to take me on as an advisee and complimenting my research ideas. Point is it can't hurt, may help. It's always good to build relationships.
  12. Good luck! All in all it seemed like a pretty quiet day.
  13. I'd think you'd like to find a faculty that has both Japanese and German historians. I know there are several gender historians who work on postwar Germany that may be helpful to what you're interested in. For example, Elizabeth Heineman at Iowa looks at marriage in postwar Germany and other gender issues.
  14. Congratulations to the Johns Hopkins acceptance.
  15. Anyone heard anything from Illinoios (Urbana-Champaign)? I looked at the results page and some folks have already gotten information as early as the 17 of January in previous years.
  16. I love the Mountain Goats Tekalnuru. Great band.
  17. I'm curious about penn state interviews as well. Anyone had any experience?
  18. Nice to see so many acceptances around here. Congrats everyone!
  19. Someone else posted an interview to my same school. Should I be worried? Lol
  20. Yes I do, still needs work of course, but I can get around.
  21. It might be fun to share what we're all looking to work on when we eventually get accepted into our dream programs. Any takers? I'm looking to work on German immigration and cultural transmission from a transnational perspective. I have a couple of options on how to pursue this course of study based upon where I end up. For example, in programs that are more Americanist leaning, I focus on the German immigrant experience in the US. In other contexts, I self-identify as a Europeanist with a transnational focus.
  22. Do you think your thesis material is stronger than your research paper? I ask because I didn't do a thesis so I submitted a major seminar paper instead.
  23. Congratulations! That's fantastic Ashiepoo!
  24. So when is it advisable to contact departments?
  25. ashiepoo72 instruct me in the arts of obsessive thread stalking
