  1. For the MBA degree, the adcom will be more concerned with recent-ongoing volunteer experiences. +/- 4 years is more than enough. - Admissions Advice Online
  2. If you want to take the approach of something "Cool and relevant," you have to make sure you show exactly how it ties in with what you really want to do. Just stating a name to say something is cool while not fully illustrating the value you could possibly bring is like stating that you like chocolate cake while applying to a neuroscience program. - Admissions Advice Online
  3. While your scores are within range, it should be noted that it is probably the only thing you can change at this point to materially increase your chances. Your quant score is great, but a higher verbal score will certainly help. There is a huge misconception that the top programs do not care about the verbal score. They do, for every person with a low verbal score they admit, they normally have to offset that with someone with a high score. Scoring high on both sections of the exam, great research and professional experiences, and a good undergrad gpa will put you at the top of the admissions pile. - Admissions Advice Online
  4. As a general rule, the longer you have been out of undergrad, the less weight will be placed on your undergraduate record. This is not to say that it is not important, because it is. However, since you have completed a master's degree, have great GRE scores and was honored by the Prime Minister of your country, a well written Statement of Purpose can certainly help propel you into a top 5 program let alone top 10. - Admissions Advice Online
  5. Applying early will you give the chances of receiving a good financial aid package. This is when programs have most of their discretionary funds still available. As the admissions cycle advances, most of that money will be awarded, leaving few dollars for those who apply later on in the process. -Admissions Advice Online
  6. This is called "senioritis." Schools can, and have many times rescinded an offer for admissions because of this. You are best not to even say anything. As long as your graduation and degree is posted, adcoms will not get involved. The office secretary will just post as normal. However, if you send an email and bring attention to this, then an admissions officer will read this and that might raise some problems. - Admissions Advice Online
  7. you can pm it to me here, I will just give you an overall critique. - Admissions Advice Online
  8. Hello? Are you a URM? Did you just complete your master's degree or was it completed at least a year ago? If so, what have you been doing in the meantime? With your stats, you should be able to get in somewhere however, this will really depend on how well you package yourself mainly how well put together your story is via the Personal Statement. -Admissions Advice Online
  9. Hello, HES programs are not as easy to get into as some people may think. Very few students who attempt the core courses actually obtain the required grades to get into a program. Also, HES will just be a stepping stone for you. Just to take you from point A to C. There is no need to care if people who will have no input as to where you go in the future will respect it or not. All admissions officers and staff at PhD programs know about HES. You can contact HES and ask them where their graduates go. Their graduates run the gamut from Harvard University itself to other IVY League and top programs. If you were rejected from NYU Poly for biotech, there is a good chance that HES courses will be highly beneficial to you. Also, you can send me your personal Statement so I can take a look and critique that as well. - Admissions Advice Online
  10. Send it over, I will take a quick look and provide you with my critique. -Admissions Advice Online
  11. Send over your SOP and I will take a look and provide you with my critique. -Admissions Advice Online
  12. Hello, You keep posting the same lack-luster SOP. You ask for advice, it is given and then you continue to post the same thing. You need to talk about specific resources at this college that you want to take advantage of? Why this program? What professors, courses, labs etc... do you look forward to interacting with? Writing things like "I realize the need for me to study at the center stage of activity in these fields at your college in USA" tell these colleges absolutely nothing about how you plan to fully utilize the resources they have to offer. Then you need to show a clear link between these resources and your future career goals after you graduate. -Admissions Advice Online
  13. What is your actual question? Also, what do you want to do post degree? Also, I worked in investment banking at JP Morgan for a few years and there were quite a few SIPA grads there. So at least another pro for Columbia would be the versatility of the degree. -Admissions Advice Online
  14. Hello, Most schools will see that you applied to another program and unless you are applying for a dual degree, many will find this to be an issue of concern as it will come off as you are not focused on what you want to do. What type of programs did you apply to? Admissions Advice Online
  15. You will have to email the actual programs for this information. All of the schools that you have listed have at least 5 MS in engineering programs so there is no way to give you an accurate answer- Admissions Advice Online
  16. A Gpa of 2.76 is never looked highly upon for graduate admissions. However, you are applying for biotechnology which is not the most difficult concentration for Admissions. With that said, with a GPA of 2.76, additional courses taken anywhere will absolutely help you out if you are not successful this admissions cycle. -Admissions Advice Online
  17. Quick question, why is your GPA now a 3.6 but expected to be a 3.5 by the time you graduate? Do you anticipate to get slightly lower grades at the end of this semester? A downward trend will hurt if your grades dip too much. Otherwise, your GRE will be fine. Your strong GPA at a UC SD will also help you. Just make sure your Statement of Purpose is well put together and apply early! - Admissions Advice Online
  18. At all of these schools your will more than likely find an "Off-campus" housing option that will still be close enough to the university that you will be in what is class the "University bubble." These schools all have robust public safety programs designed to protect all students on and off campus. You should not worry at all. I went to Upenn never felt safer- Admissions Advice Online
  19. As a potential international student, you should write your SOP always from an academic standpoint. Your reasons for wanting to study at this particular university in the USA should really only focus on the academic culture that is available there that you believe cannot be found at a local university. This can include the types of professors, courses, and resources that are available at your target university. So remove all the references you have to the USA being a great country(which it is) and the other verbage. This makes you seem as though you only want a visa. This may turn some admissions officers off. You also need to flush out more your experiences and research positions. Also, you need to talk about a proposed plan. What will you do once you have this degree? Why are you really seeking an advanced degree at this time. You have most of the elements of a great SOP, I will help you make it perfect. - Admissions Advice Online
  20. You can send it over and I will take a look. -Admissions Advice Online
  21. Harvard Extension School will get you into well respected PhD programs. The reality is that HES is only open enrollment if you want to take a few classes, but to actually get into one of their programs, you have to do pretty well. It has been said time after time that classes at HES are harder than courses at Harvard College. Furthermore, quite a few courses at HES are taught by faculty from other schools at HES. Judging by your profile, which includes the GPA of a 2.76, HES will serve as a perfect bridge for you. -Admissions Advice Online
  22. Very very rarely do graduate courses transfer. You should just finish the current degree, otherwise you risk losing all that time and money invested. Furthermore having related degrees could make you more marketable. - Admissions Advice Online
  23. Anyone can complete the post bach in the US. You should however take a look at each program's structure. Some programs will not help international students prepare applications for American Med Schools. However, as long as you had an undergraduate gpa above a 2.7-3.0, getting into an American Post Bach is not too difficult. -Admissions Advice Online.
  24. As a former admissions officer for a top US school, I know that most schools will offer a grace period. After this grace period, any reference not submitted is viewed as a negative LOR while other schools will consider the application incomplete and will not review it. You should absolutely email the professor/recommended and have HIM explain a valid reason why this was submitted late. This argument will be less effective if you do it on his behalf. -Admissions Advice Online
  25. Hello, Almost everyone applying to these types of programs have the same if not better statistics. Because of this schools look at other factors to make final decisions and it is really hard to give you any useful advice without knowing more about your profile. I personally am working with a few clients now that have GRE scores /GPA higher than yours. However, based on my past experience, if you can show a "natural belonging" it will greatly help your chances. That is to say if you have done related research, related work experience where you can show a natural break to return to study or anything that can show why you need this program right now. This is normally done through a well crafted SOP.- Admissions Advice Online
