  1. Hooray! My magic 8 ball prediction turned out correct. I did indeed receive an acceptance, with full funding and a stipend, in a location that works great for my wife and me. I now believe magic 8 ball predictions are irrefutably accurate. The results of this study cannot be denied.
  2. Ha ha. Just whistling in the dark a bit. Results have started to come out of my top school today, and the suspense is driving crazy.
  3. I hear that anyone accepted to Yale AND Harvard actually gets sent to Yarvard, a school midway between the two of them that specializes in pirate academics. Yar! Careful what you wish for!
  4. Maybe the 8 ball doesn't foretell future events; maybe it causes them to happen. Maybe each time you received a different answer, the future was forced to change to fit the 8 ball's latest prediction. Maybe originally you were not going to get in, but now the 8 ball has altered future events. If you get in now, you'll know why. Magic! In related news, all this waiting has left me with too much time and a meandering mind.
  5. Thanks for sharing. This was an interesting read.
  6. I am resorting to shaking magic 8 balls, reading about the higgs, and pondering the mysterious connections between the two.
  7. Admit it. You've asked a magic 8 ball what your chances are. I have. Please post here what you asked your magic 8 ball and what the response was. When you find out later what happens, post or add the result through an edit so we can study magic 8 ball accuracy. Here is a link to an online one: http://www.indra.com/cgi-bin/spikes-8-ball I'll go first. Q:"Will anyone accept me with full funding?" A: "Without a doubt." It's silly, but I actually feel better.
  8. Thanks, jmu. I ended up going with a one paragraph update to the graduate secretary. I also said there was no need to reply and she could share the update or not as she felt appropriate.
  9. I applied to 3, but given my location constraints, that's really all I could do. Still, seeing the posts by individuals who applied to 3 or more times as many schools as I did makes me concerned. But what the hay, I only finished the application to 1 undergrad school, and I got into that one, so maybe this will all work out.
  10. Hmmm... I was actually considering emailing the head of the department I most want to go to, but I'm not so sure now after reading this thread. I wasn't going to ask for a status check and was instead going to supply new information about something that just happened that might improve my chances. Really I just wanted them to think about me again. I had already contacted a faculty member for information before applying though. Maybe it's just better if I sit tight and wait. I applied early December before the December deadline, but this department does not seem to start contacting people until the end of February. The wait is killing me!
  11. A master's in English is really a master's in literature, not grammar (although grammar is important). I have a BA in English, and never once did we discuss grammar in class in college. We did that in high school. Maybe buying a high school textbook on grammar would help.
