  1. I don't mean to nitpick your post, but you say that you want to lead/develop a team to develop technologies, but don't want to work in research? Am I small-minded, or does that seem counter-intuitive? Additionally - when I was applying to MS&E programs, I never saw Masters of Eng. options, only Masters of Science.
  2. Add in University of San Diego to the mix (USD) and it confuses everyone!
  3. I'm not passionate about cars. I just need something to take me from point A to point B. I have a 2003 Honda Accord. It was my mom's, and she gave it to me when she bought her new Prius in 2011. Recently just passed 100K in mileage. Has never given me any trouble, not even a flat tire!
  4. Gave notice at work and signed my new lease within 2 hours of each other... life is happening!

      Congrats! Exciting stuff!

  5. I'm going to sound much more materialistic than everyone else who has posted, haha. I paint my own nails and toenails (instead of going to a salon). Interestingly, I've started driving to work again because public transportation + biking was more expensive, more exhausting, and more time consuming.
  6. Graduate Coordinator is on vacation until June 30th, but the link was helpful! I just filled out my application. Hoping to hear back soon
  7. I'm not sure how to contact other grad students. I haven't been invited to any grad student group :\
  8. biotechie, I was just wondering if there would be any headache if I did lab work on a PC and had another laptop as a Mac Air. Does it create any problems for you? Are you able to easily transport data from one computer to another (do you need to?)?
  9. You sound just like me! I applied to 6 schools, all of them in California. There were many reasons why I wanted to stay in California (could not afford out-of-state tuition; green tech industry is booming; wanting to settle down in California to be close to family; boyfriend didn't want to leave). Thankfully California had many programs that fit my needs.
  10. Unfortunately my SO cannot move to SD until January 2015 - I am currently looking for a room from August - December. I've contacted ~ 10 craigslist ads so far, but everyone is looking for a tenant now/July. Any tips or leads from people would be appreciative!
  11. I originally wanted to quit my job early and travel around some foreign country before starting grad school, but I'll probably be quitting in a month and just travel out to Texas to see family. In the mean time, I'll be reading Getting What You Came For and At The Bench: A Laboratory Navigator.
  12. Come on over to the existing UCSD thread
  13. MakeYourself, you're coming off as someone very immature in this thread. When someone disagrees with you, you respond with snark and sarcasm. You should either counter-argue with valid, logical points, or be comfortable that some people will simply have different opinions from you.
  14. I think I'm looking for housing too early - all of the ads are looking for tenants for June/July! I guess I'll wait a few weeks before emailing people again...

      * I'm looking at craigslist. * I'm moving to La Jolla/San Diego - not exactly a college town. I've contacted a few places and the ones who have responded have said, "Sorry but I'm looking for someone right now." * I'm looking for a place starting in August! I went to UCSD for my alma mater and I'm familiar with the area.

I have the exact same problem … almost nobody on craigslist is looking for somebody in August yet, although I faithfully check the ads every day. I used to write to every ad with a "flexible" move-in date, but even they write back saying flexible means sometime in the next two weeks. I was told at my visit day that most housing changes hands in August, but that doesn't make it less nerve-wracking to wait.

Have either of you tried to network with other incoming grad students through your respective departments? You may be able to find a decent living situation that way.

  15. I know for sure that UCSD offers 1-year non-thesis MS programs.
  16. How often do you meet with your adviser? I understand the answer can vary. I'm certain my adviser will ask me, "How often do you want to meet?" Even though this adviser has a lot of graduate students (~12), he seems to be on top of his work and attentive to his grad students. Should I answer every week, every other week, or every month? I also understand that the schedule can change depending on how research is going, etc. Even if do not want to offer advice for me, please feel free to say "For me, I meet with my adviser X times per ____". It will help me figure out a ballpark figure.
  17. I can somewhat relate. I don't need to listen to music every day. Normally I prefer to read over listening to music. While driving, I listen to the news. I rarely go to music concerts or shows or festivals. I'm not willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a concert ticket. Now that I reflect, I only listen to music when I'm doing a mundane, mindless task that requires some stimulation (cleaning, boring paperwork, bad traffic, etc).
  18. I have a question that I don't believe is sufficient for a whole post - how often do you meet with your adviser?

Oh you could definitely have a post based on this question.

  20. Do you want to leave the biology field? Where are you gaining your IT training? Also why do you want to pursue an MBA? Unfortunately your GPA and GRE scores will not land you in a top-tier MBA program in the US.
  21. GradHooting, I'm happy to see that things are starting to look up. I am rooting for you. You are dedicated to being a good student. Many other students would have completely given up, but you showed perseverance (and asked for help) and it is starting to pay off. Keep chugging along, and good luck.
  22. Visited UCSD last weekend - spoke with professor and grad students - all doing extremely interesting research. I'm very excited to join this research group in a few months!

  23. I think it's ethically atrocious. Reminds me of the difference between manslaughter and 1st degree murder: while both actions are terrible and punishable, most people agree that manslaughter is somewhat more forgivable. Cheating is similar, to me: unplanned one-time sexual encounter is very different and far more forgivable than a planned, drawn out sexual love affair. Ashley Madison represents the latter.
  24. It matters, but it's less of a disadvantage than I originally thought. I majored in Environmental Chemistry and was accepted to multiple Materials Science graduate programs. I've spoken with a professor who says that many MatSci students have chemistry backgrounds, and therefore it is not a major disadvantage since there is a natural connection between chemistry and materials science. I see a natural connection between biology/physics to biomedical engineering (but that's just my opinion). Graduate programs might require for you to take pre-requisite courses to make up for any gaps in your undergraduate education, but this is not uncommon. One caveat: I only applied to MS programs, no PhD programs. I'm not interested in obtaining a PhD, but I also do not believe I would have been accepted to any PhD programs (at least not at any top 30 schools).
