  1. You still have a week to go before needing to tell Uni. South Carolina your decision. I hope UCSD gets back to you within that timeframe. If not... it's possible to accept Uni. South Carolina, then "ask to be released" if UCSD accepts you. It's not the preferred method, but I'm sure it happens every year. I've never asked for an extension before...
  2. That sounds like a polite way of saying, "I can't believe your husband is letting you do this." Not to be unfairly cynical towards your Facebook friends....
  3. Most of the "MSE" faculty are faculty from other departments (chem, mech, etc). Really really small faculty, but also a small program (which would be a nice change from a huge undergrad population experience)
  4. Hey, I was the writer who made the comment about UCSD's MS program only lasting 1 year for non-thesis. I only realized this when I spoke to a professor - I suggest contacting UCLA to ask about their thesis vs non-thesis option. You can also look in UCLA's Graduate Student handbook which should be available on their website, the information might be available there too.
  5. Considering the graduate apartment wait-lists - and wanting to live with my non-student boyfriend - I'll probably be looking at off-campus housing. Does anyone have strong opinions (good or bad) about the different apartment buildings in the La Jolla/UTC area? I prefer to live close to campus (close enough to take a free bus/shuttle and get there within 20-30 minutes).
  6. Ah! I see. I'm not very knowledgeable about Engineering management degrees, but as an outsider... Columbia and Dartmouth both have the "ivy league" title. They seem pretty similar to me, I wouldn't have known that Columbia is ranked higher unless you told me. Hope my opinion helps.
  7. ... I'm sort of shocked that anyone can say San Diego is polluted and crime ridden. I grew up in Los Angeles, went to UCSD, now I live close to San Francisco. SD, especially La Jolla, is like paradise compared to those 2 cities. The "everyone is moving away because of crazy rent prices" is not a new argument for any US city. If someone says that about Manhattan or San Francisco, I can understand. But San Diego? Hmm... I don't see it. I'm someone who is not afraid to say: location is important. If you prefer a small town, Davis is the right choice. I've been to Davis and I loved it. It's a cute college town, very open, very centered around UC Davis students. But I can tell you right now: San Diego is not a shithole. I can't wait to lay in the sun at La Jolla shores, to go beer tasting at Stone Brewery and Karl Strauss, and to visit museums in Balboa Park.
  8. Declined UC Irvine... hopefully it will open up a spot for someone else.

  10. As obaka said, not common for the Graduate School to reject you... only if someone has done something very wrong (lied on transcripts, GPA below minimum requirement, warrant out for your arrest, etc) would the Grad School reject someone.
  11. If I'm not wrong - MS&E = mat sci & eng and MEM = masters in engineering management Two very different programs! Are these two engineering disciplines ranked evenly in your book?
  12. Man, I know where I want to go, but I'm so nervous to accept. I can't help but wonder if some life-altering event will present itself before April 15th, swaying my decision. I'm not waiting on anything else. Why am I waiting to accept admission?
  13. I have 2 starter questions: - Have you seen any good movies lately? - Any travel (or recently passed) travel plans?
  14. Taking time off between UG and grad school is probably what helped me the most. I had the opportunity to gain valuable experience when I wanted to change career paths. I can't but feel adcoms trusted my confidence when I said in my SOP, "Seriously, this is what I want to do. I've thought about it for 3.5 years and worked in multiple jobs."
  15. I, too, scored much lower during the actual exam than on practice tests. But I got accepted to UCSD with a 160 quant score! Not sure if UPenn is ranked higher than UCSD in CS, but I hope it shows that your quant score is not too low to be accepted to good schools.
  16. How old is she? 9?
  17. ... wow. I can't believe they sent you all of that before an official decision had been made. That's absurd. I will probably discourage friends from applying there.
  18. Also going to UCSD for an MS. If you're non-thesis, it only takes a year (talked to a professor on the phone, he told me this). You just take courses, and at the end of 1 year, you take a written comprehensive exam and then - BAM! - you have your Masters title. He said that a very large majority of students pass the written exam.
  19. Hey there! I've also been accepted to UCSD. I also went to UCSD for my Bachelor's degree, I absolutely loved my time there. There definitely are San Diego good vibrations, but the university is also full of extremely motivated, intelligent students. Although I must admit, I became frustrated over the constant competition and lack of night life, but I'm going back for my Masters!
  20. I don't know man... Chinatown was kind of weird.
  21. Hey everyone, I have been admitted to 2 MS programs at great schools, and am trying to weigh my options. One school requires a thesis - and the other school does not require a thesis. Since I do not plan on pursuing a PhD, are there any benefits towards doing a thesis? Is it best to avoid a thesis, if possible?
  22. Just ended a phone call with a professor at UCSD. I was expecting to ask general questions about the program, but it ended in an invitation to join his research group. Sweet. Dude. Sweet.

  23. I'm 85% sure I'll be attending UCSD. I had a scheduled phone call with a professor just now, expecting to ask general questions about the program, but it ended up as an invitation to join his research group. Sweet. Super sweet.
