  1. Don't be lonely! It's not even March yet, I haven't heard back from most schools. I'm freakin' THRILLED to be accepted to USC, but I want to take my time, hear back from all schools, make 4573409 pros/cons lists, and make my final decision because joining the Meet n' Greet. Especially since I just learned this morning that a lot of USC-based scholarships had December 15th deadlines D: Did you apply to the Viterbi school? If so, did you get the email about the upcoming webinars for newly admitted students? I signed up for the one tomorrow at 2pm
  2. I've gained 15 pounds since July, when this whole process started kicking into high gear. That's a lot for someone who is 5'1. I might, legitimately, be overweight. It might be stress-eating, or it might be the advantages of my youth slipping away. Stomach: "You had 2 beers today? Here's an extra inch on your waistline! Lol you're not 22 anymore!"
  3. Being a native Californian, I love Mexican food. Anything involving beans, avocado, cheese, and salsa sounds delicious to me. With those 4 ingredients, I can make many healthy, high-protein versatile dishes(especially if I decide to add chicken and/or lettuce). If I move back to LA to attend USC, I'll be looking forward to the 24-hr taco food trucks. Their soft, warm flour tortillas wrapped around juicy meat and grilled onions, topped with homemade salsa... gaaahhhh
  4. Facebook is a place where people only report their highlights, but not their downfalls. For example - I'm waiting until I decide where to attend before announcing my plans (on Facebook) for graduate school. People won't know that I scored 3 points less on my GREs the second time I took them, despite studying close to 70 hours - they also don't have to know that my MS degree will take ~3 years since I need to take make-up courses - and even if I only get accepted to one school, they won't know about the other 5 schools that rejected me. They will only hear that I've been accepted to a great school and that I'm excited to attend. I don't filter to intentionally make myself look better - I would rather share good news than bad news, especially with acquaintances. I share bad news with family and close friends, people who I can confide for sound advice and who can lift my spirits. So when you scan your Facebook feed, just know that for every victory, there were many more failures.
  5. UCLA emailed you just now to let you know? That's a little late, if you ask me!
  6. 10.79, I feel that my stats are pretty average all around (average GRE, average GPA). Although, if I convert my new GRE scores to the old format (via the ETS conversion table) and plug it into the other formula, I get a 9.99. Interesting...
  7. No, but I wasn't paying close attention to my job before getting accepted, either! Work around here is sllooowwww, I don't feel bad about playing around online.
  8. Just as I hoped I would one day contribute to the acceptance thread, I now am contributing my rejection woes to this thread. Last Friday, I received my first notification, which was also an acceptance(USC). I was thrilled, but wanted to wait for notifications from other schools. Saturday morning, I wake up at 9am to see that an email from UCLA arrived. I was surprised to see an email so early, as UCLA is notorious for sending notifications very late. Blah blah blah, we cannot offer you admission at this time, much competition, so sorry, etc. Surprisingly, I was not that upset. UCLA and USC are rival schools, and very different from each other. While I was writing my SOP, I had a feeling my ideas would appeal to the ambiance of USC - but, seeing that UCLA was higher-ranked and less expensive, I figured I would take a shot and apply. If there's one thing I learned from this, is that I would much much much rather receive an acceptance before any rejections. After reading my rejection letter, I shrugged and said, "Oh well, already have been accepted somewhere else!"

  10. I received my UCLA rejection within 24 hours after I received my USC acceptance - they are rival schools and I was very tempted to write "FIGHT ON!" on the results page
  11. I'm pretty sure that there are free shuttles to campus from the Palo Alto Caltrain stop. This opens your availability to live in other cities on the peninsula, if you are OK with taking the train. Redwood City/San Carlos/Belmont/San Mateo are less expensive than Palo Alto and Menlo Park, although not significantly cheaper. Parts of Redwood City can be unsafe, be sure to check out the area before signing a lease. All 4 cities have fun things to do. Avoid East Palo Alto. Mountain View is just south of Palo Alto, with a nice downtown area. Cheaper than PA/Menlo. Sunnyvale is just south of MV, but does not have a great night life. Probably the cheapest area to live besides Redwood City. Here is the Caltrain website and schedule: http://www.caltrain.com/schedules/weekdaytimetable.html Source: Lived in MV for 2 years and San Carlos for the past 8 months.
  12. Hi Grads14, I have no publications, but I have 3 years industry experience. My stats: 160 Q 157 V 4.5W. 3.33 GPA from UC San Diego. My stats aren't exceptionally amazing, but I thought I would take a chance and apply.
  13. Got my UCLA rejection this morning - sort of stings, since I saw a lot of UCLA acceptances yesterday. Oh, well, Fight On Trojans!
  14. First rejection today - not surprised, but still sucks.

  15. Cool. Then go ahead and apply.
  16. I'm a non-engineering major applying for engineer grad programs, all of them require at least an UG science degree (chemistry, physics, etc). I studied chemistry, and I'll still need to take remedial courses before officially starting the program. There might be exceptions, but I don't know of any. I don't think your UG degree in Econ will be accepted.
  17. 1. I've never taken a MBTI test with percentages, I'll have to check that out. 2. I did some research - 17% of the US has a bachelor's and 10% has a graduate/professional degree. If, let's say, 50% of those who apply to graduate school don't complete their degree, then about 14% of the population applies to graduate school. Now, certainly not everyone who applies to graduate school comes to GradCafe, so that bumps down the percentage of GradCafers to... I guess, 6 or 7% of the overall population? If my assumptions are correct, you're right, abnormal is normal for GradCafe. But I can't help but be very suspicious of anything that perpetrates the "you're a special snowflake" message. I feel like it does extreme cognitive damage.
  18. So happy to be contributing to this thread. I've read through all the posts here for the past month, hoping I would one day write about my own acceptance; today, it came. I was sitting in a boring meeting at work - when an email came through. It didn't excite me, since I completed my FAFSA application a few days ago and was receiving many emails from schools about financial aid that were unrelated to my admission decision. However, this particular email had the subject line containing the word "Congratulations!" It could only mean one thing. Yup. I had been admitted. I did my best to keep my cool throughout the rest of the meeting (no one knows I applied to graduate school), but I feverishly emailed my family and friends to share the good news. I didn't apply to a single school that I wasn't excited to attend. The fact that I got accepted meant I was going to an institution where I would be proud to call myself an alumna someday. Even if I don't receive another acceptance, I'd be content. Edit: Grammar. Sorry. Shaky hands.
  19. First acceptance, I'm going to grad school!

  20. "my SOP" <-- there you go, I wrote it, hold your applause. But to bring the thread back on track - we should take these personality types with a big grain of salt. There might be some truth (I consider myself introverted), but we should look for false claims. For example, has anyone noticed that there are no flaws or negative characteristics in our personality descriptions? That's a little odd to me. Would we dismiss our results if they touched on our negative personality traits, especially ones that we have a hard time accepting? Perhaps these personality tests purposefully don't input personality flaws in their descriptions to entice us to believe our results, and trust in the accuracy of the test? Another hypothesis, and perhaps unnecessarily damning, but I've noticed that a lot of us have rare personality types. Is it a coincidence? Maybe.... but I've always wondered if these personality tests are fixed. Was I given the most rare personality type on purpose, to make me feel special? Would I consider the MBTI personality test to be more accurate if it gave me results that made me feel like one-of-a-kind? Just some of my musings, other thoughts are welcome.
  21. But Ox's and Dragons are meant to be together! How can you deny our love? This is proven science! If I don't find a husband right now, I'll never have enough time to have 3 kids.
  22. I'm a dragon... Hey baby, whatchu doin' tonight?
  23. It's like a train wreck.... I can't turn my eyes away from it all.
  24. I always test as INFJ, but sometimes wonder if I'm an INTJ. According to MTBI's own manual, they are 75% accurate, so it's possible we may test as one personality type but overlap another.
  25. Ditto... Applied to 6 schools, haven't heard back from a single one.... And most have shown up in the results page.
