  1. There's even some schools that don't require official transcripts until someone's been admitted. I can't see why they would ask for official transcripts if they're going to reject you, unless the information on your official transcripts doesn't match the information on your application. Just my opinion.
  2. Even if the abuse in past has been "just psychological", doesn't mean it won't get physical in the future. Keep on your toes around this guy. There probably isn't anything legal you can do right now (it's all hearsay at this point), but keep a close eye on him and don't be afraid to kick him out.
  3. Similar research interests, similar stats... you and I have a lot in common, friend*! *unless we're both applying to the same programs, in which case we are SWORN ENEMIES
  4. I didn't, and was very worried at first - although I hear that it's not essential for a Masters (whew!). Although I did mention professors I would like to work with in my SOP. There are a lot of mixed messages around contacting POIs before applying.
  5. Two ones I saw today: Rehabilitation Science Combinatorics & Optimization (no idea what this could be!)
  6. Did anyone here make the post on the Results Page about their acceptance to UC Davis's MS program? Davis is one of my top choices. There haven't been any other posts about UC Davis's MS program on the Results page, and I haven't heard anything.
  7. I just want to know where I'll be in 6 months. I. Just. Want. To. Know.
  8. 4/6 SOPs were 700 words; 2 had a limit of 4,000 characters, they were ~ 600 words. Just one page... short and to the point. I have no research experience, and didn't have much to talk about. All my paragraphs were the same except for one paragraph, which was tailored toward the university.
  9. My alma mater was UC San Diego - in every one of my science/math classes, the curve for every exam was set to a B-. I believe science/math majors had GPAs around 2.9 - 3.2, while social science/humanities majors were 3.4 - 3.7. Edit: Just want to add this is based on my experience with asking individuals - I have no articles or concrete evidence.
  10. If your SO is your fiance, husband or a permanent domestic partner, they might take you SO's potential acceptance into consideration. If your SO is a boyfriend, they might not look favorably upon your request. I had 2 friends who applied to GWU; they were engaged; woman was accepted, man was wait-listed(two different departments). Woman wrote to both adcoms and said, "We are engaged and will not live in separate cities; if you do not accept him, I will not attend." Adcom ended up accepting the man. Although it worked, it was probably a risky move. I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, but I hope it helps.
  11. Loving this thread! My first major in college was Archaeology (technically it was Biological Anthropology, but I wanted to be an archaeologist). I went to Archaeology field school my freshman year, and realized I although I loved it, I didn't love it enough for a PhD. I saw how hard the graduate students worked (no such thing as weekends)... and realized that I would likely be a drop-out. I decided to maintain my interests in archaeology from a distance and pursue another career path. I still LOVE learning about other cultures(current and historic), and travel as much as I can. Also, beer. I love beer. Before deciding to start graduate school in Fall 2014, I seriously considered getting a beer judge certificate.
  12. The white ink on my refresh button is starting to rub off.

  13. Results page shows someone heard back from my top-choice in the same exact program I applied to - let the freak-out REALLY begin!

  14. Unrelated to the thread, but related to the article... I'm even more paranoid now, since I never contacted any POI before applying! It seems like there are mixed messages whether or not to contact POIs before applying.
  15. "Are you sure you want to go to graduate school?" Noooooo, I apply to graduate programs because it's fun.
  16. Results page showed someone receiving an acceptance email on February 1st(Saturday) for a Mathematics PhD program from Georgia Tech.
  17. Text message seems a little informal, although I would be happy for any positive contact!
  18. I'm about to throw in a last-minute application to a state school. Although this school is not highly ranked, it has the resources I need to study what I'm passionate about... and my boyfriend and I wouldn't need to quit our jobs and move to another city.
  19. Maybe start your own Moishe house? I've never gone through the process before... but worth checking out if it's possible?
  20. I visited Charleston a few years ago and loved the city. My parents and I visited the reform synagogue(as good Jews normally do on vacation) and I bought a "Shalom, Y'all" bag at the gift shop Avoiding pork was WAY more difficult than I thought it would be! Why do they put it in the gravy?!
  21. I'm from Los Angeles... so there's that. Now I live in the SF Bay Area, which has a sizable Jewish community all over. A lot of Jews tend to lean secular, or more "spiritual" Jewish, but there's still every denomination synagogue available. There's also 5 Moishe Houses in the SF Bay Area(3 in SF, one in East Bay, one in Palo Alto). Every Trader Joe's carries challah, there's bagel shops in many areas. Not sure of any kosher restaurants. Thankfully all the schools I applied to have a Jewish community, most have a Moishe House close by. I assume they all have a Hillel, too. P.S. - Almost forgot - a kosher sushi restaurant opened up in Palo Alto!! I can't wait to try it!
  22. If you ask me... I'm not rejected until they say I'm rejected! They might send out acceptances for their "A-list" applicants, but if their A-listers decide to go to other schools, they might send acceptances to B-listers(as long as the scores/materials are good enough).
  23. Just realized I've only been waiting for 2 weeks for results. Gaaahh.

    1. EngineerGrad

      EngineerGrad

Hahaha... I submitted my apps in november, my friend :-(

  24. Bless your heart, sweetie.
  25. EngineerGrad, I also got 160 quant score and am applying for Materials Sci & Engineering... and was also surprised with the amazing quant/verbal scores on the results page! It's definitely making me nervous too. I think if I don't get accepted to any school, I will need to focus on raising my quant score for the second round.
