Hi! I'm not sure how useful this will be, but taxes paid depends on how you file/what you have regularly deducted. If your school does not take out taxes, then you should check to see if this is actually taxable (some fellowships are not). If it is taxable, then you should look into whether or not you will have to pay quarterly taxes. If you look up on the IRS website, it mentions that if you do not pay quarterly taxes, you can end up being fined/have to pay fees. I don't full understand why they just can't send a bill with taxes owed, but whatever. As for the amount of taxes: Some states do taxes based on income level. For instance, the first $9,000 of a $15,000 stipend might be taxed as one percentage and then the rest at another, which could reduce your tax from say 20% to 15%. For what it is worth, I was taken about 20 percent when I worked in retail. I imagine this would be similar to a fellowship, since they both fall under earned income. But I'm not an accountant, so I'm not fully certain if fellowships are indeed taxed differently.

I hit a really good place in January and February where I just assumed that no one would hear back until April. Then I saw results from 2013 where a person applying for my grant found out in early March. It has been hell ever since.
-
I wish the intensive grant posted hen we would hear back!
-
I don't know if you posted on the DAAD GC thread, but a BUNCH of people had that issue, so I wouldn't be too concerned. I hope you are fortunate and get both!
-
Well hopefully you get into your top grad program AND they allow deferment for such an awesome opportunity (some do!) What do you play? I once played trumpet until I realized that I am tone deaf and also have no rhythm.

The summer intensive does not have a portal (I wish it did though now it seems like more of a torture device). I believe they are research/study candidates.
-
Yeah I talked to my accountant and he said if you aren't working for it it becomes a non-taxable scholarship too.
-
I wish they had a log in. We emailed in submissions and received an email saying we would be notified of the decision (yes or no) mid-February. Again, I assume I didn't get in, but I like closure
-
I'm not sure what the issue was last year, but this does sound like good preliminary news! So congrats!
-
Yeah nothing turned up. Oh well. I guess I'll just wait for official notification. Thanks for the suggestions!
-
Also, where/what programs did you apply for for the intensive grant? I did Marburg then Bonn as my second choice.
-
I heard for the summer intensive that you get an email first, then snail mail later (from two people who I met on GC who won it). I'm really hoping we hear back soon!
-
Ohhhhh "selection made" sound promising! I hope you hear via email or something soon that you got it
-
I haven't heard anything. But I applied for the intensive language grant and there is no portal for that.

There is really no reason I'd need to know. The conference is right near me so I wouldn't have to worry about securing funding. I mainly just wanted confirmation that my proposal was not accepted as I assume I would have heard back by now. I think I will wait another week then possibly email.
-
It is national so I guess I'll give it another week. Then email?
-
The conference is in May, but I heard about the decision date in an email from the coordinator confirming that my submission was received. The website doesn't mention any extensions for the submission date. I was thinking of responding to the original email and just saying I was following up, since she had mentioned mid-february, but I understand that things can be delayed.
-
I applied for a conference and was told decisions would be made mid-February. It is March and I haven't heard anything. I assume at this point I wasn't selected to present, but I'm wondering if I should email for confirmation and if so, what I should say.

Hi All. I started a similar thread. The only scholarships available that aren't uni specific are the Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell (well for Ireland), and the Gates-Cambridge. Oxford has its own Clarendon ones (140 scholarships for 20,000+ applicants). These all have Sept/Oct deadlines and are extremely competitive.

Thanks for responding! I looked it up on IRS and it seemed like mine would be taxed. I haven't received any forms nor has anyone else. Perhaps I will email the Bursar's office or my DGS and see if they have a contact person. I have all of my checks which didn't have taxes taken out, so I guess I'll just add those up and have that as my earned additional income.

Hey all, So I was told my fellowship was tax-free when I started the program. However, I haven't received any tax forms regarding it and I planned to file this weekend with my accountant. I only received a 1098-T, which only notes my tuition/tuition wavers, not the fellowship. I was planning on noting the fellowship as additional income, which I know would be taxed, but without a form, I don't really want to trust anyone on this. Does anyone have any insight of fellowship taxation? It is a lump sum given each month to all first-years at the program and isn't specifically tied down to any costs (i.e. it isn't earmarked for books only or something like that).

As someone with over 70K in undergrad loans, I cannot understand why on earth you would want to put yourself in that situation willingly. All I do is pretty much panic over money and I'm currently only paying the interest while in deferment. You have 10k? Take a gap year. Pay that off. Apply to a mix of paid and unpaid MAs. UMass Boston as a decent MA that is funded, Villanova has a good one that is funded (with a later deadline you may be able to apply to), and tons of mid-western schools do as well. In regards to the writing center, the majority of those are run by English departments, staffed by MA/PhD students. If they didn't offer you funding, I doubt you'll be able to get enough to really decrease the amount you'd need to borrow. You can look at this as an investment, but there are better investments you could make (re: doing an unfunded or funded MA at a state school that is well ranked).
-
It depends if you have a fellowship or not. I have one and it is tax free (it also depends on the type of fellowship). I checked with other grad students who filed in previous years; they didn't pay any taxes on fellowship years, but did when they were TAing/RAing.
-
I think most of us applied for MAs. I applied for the intensive language grant. Good luck everyone! Hopefully we hear back soon.

My parents haven't paid for anything in terms of tuition, rent, etc. Even when I was in undergrad, it was paid all in loans taken out in my name, so I'm wondering if they can even file with me as a dependent because they didn't provide 51% of financial support this past year.
