    DAAD 2017-2018

    Congrats!
  2. Good luck everyone!
  3. I mean, part of me isn't that worried because the initial notifications came out on time. I get that that was technically under President Obama, but I doubt that much changed in the grand scheme of things when he left (I'm sure Fulbright wasn't President Trump's first program to target). So I'm hopeful that we will hear soon and I'm also lucky that I don't have many decisions I would need to make by May (other than letting my boss know they need to hire someone else, but she is AMAZINGateverythingever and is basically going with the flow.
  4. I assume they would have by now, as the deadline was the 21st. I wouldn't recommend it. They probably don't know themselves (things could take forever) and I bet they get annoyed with that type of email (that said, it probably wouldn't impact the results, so....).
  5. I started a blog to basically blog about my Fulbright feels and I must say, it is helping with the stress. I haven't been mentioning to too many of friends my thoughts as march comes along, primarily because I don't want to be needy. Like...no one gets this until they do it. So I recommend blogging or even just writing in a journal for those who have anxiety or just need a space to vent.
  6. OMG. I've had that since January. Also, I must say, the [NS] subject line is so cruel. I honestly wish they had a plain subject line so that I didn't immediately sob when I got my rejection a few years ago. This year, there shall still be tearsmaybe of joy but I'm more prepared as I've set every device to ring a specific tone but not show the message. However, I'm now getting terrorized by the wind chime noise on other's apple phones...such is life.
  7. I mean, all departments are different. I have 2.5 years of coursework. During the first year, I had fellowship (not teaching) but from that points on, I have to teach every semester to keep my funding, unless I get an outside grant. The second half of year 3 if for quals. Year 4 is working on our diss. prospectus, which is research. After that, until we graduate, we do writing and research (as necessary for said writing). So really, the only years that research works well are year 4 (next year) and year 5 (because whilst working on the prospectus, one would probably realize, hey! I don't know something and need to find that out!). So yeah, I have to teach unless I get outside funding, hence applying for the Fulbright. But honestly, I was planning on applying for things for year 5 anyways, and I viewed the Fulbright as a long shot. I just didn't have enough mental enegery to apply for a bunch of things and, since I'm not past quals, I'm not eligible for a lot of grants. But next year I'll go all out
  8. I just looked at the Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses application...it is so short...why did I not know about this? Cursed fates! *flails about*
  9. Welp, I wish I had known about that program...My archive is there, so I need to be there. Maybe if I don't get the Fulbright, I'll reapply and apply to the Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses next year. Will you be in Berlin if given a grant? If we both end up there, we should totally meet up! I'm in a weird dissertation place where I technically start it next year, hence why I'm applying while I'm still in coursework, but I'll have a few more years (like...2) where it'd be feasible to do fellowships focusing on research rather than just writing.
  10. It says Germany eta, but who knows!
  11. So, not to be a butt or anything, but are you sure you founded out in February? The notification on the google doc says people heard on 3/26 and I can't fathom why some people would find out earlierbutwhatdoIknow Also, seriously don't worry about the transcripts. It is literally just a formality to make sure you didn't nosedive in the fall.
  12. Acting means that they are the current head, but that no one has been nominated to replace them, so they "act" as head until they get it. If someone is listed as acting, then that position is filled, just temporarily by that person.
  13. Honestly, I highly doubt the head of the BoECA even looks at these. It is most likely lower-level staff positions, esp. considering how many applications there are, and I imagine those are staffed.
  14. I think it will be hard to tell if it is late. So, Germany typically notifies mid march, but they've done late march and early april before, so I won't know if it is "late" unless it comes out mid-April, which has NEVER happened before. *knocks on all types of wood*
  15. Hi! Not sure if you made it to round 2 or not (I hope you did!) but for what it is worth, I talked to an English professor when I was applying to grad school and applying for Fulbright (I was applying for the study to the UK, which has a 4% acceptance rate and I ended up being a semi-finalist) and she said that the ETA isn't that prestigious (for grad programs). They care more about study/research. That said, an ETA would be an amazing experience in and of itself.
  16. Thanks for letting us know! I hope something changes and it happens sooner! I know they make the decision, get it approved by host country, then get it approved by the Fulbright Department in the US (Under the Bureau of Something or Other). So there are a few reasons why it could be delayed.
  17. I hope it isn't a general thing. I can imagine it being country specific because of how it works, but idk.
  18. At least you didn't think it was at 9.45am and find out it was at 8.45am!
  19. Did they tell you about it in an email? Or via interview that it'd be later?
  20. I had academic reasons (my archive is there), cultural reasons (the archive is of a german scholar persecuted during WWII and Berlin has amazing resources to help me get more cultural context) and personal reasons (I want to improve my German, I'd like to live and work in Germany one day, if possible).
  21. If you like the books, waiting until you see the series... Maybe that is how I should be spending my time....
  22. I'm right there with you. Somehow, October to January flew by and now I feel anxious each day. I can only hope someone hears soon so I know we aren't waiting endlessly. Also, PSA: If you get an email stating your transcripts did not arrive (it will come after Feb. 21), don't panic and think now you have a black mark on your application. You can send them again. They get lost in the mail. They get lost in the building they go to, etc.
  23. Germany has heard the third Wednesday of March for the last two years (fingers crossed, cause otherwise it is the first week of April). That is for the research/study grant. ETAs usually hear later (april). Idk. I'm trying not to think about it, but now that we are closer to a month out...idk...
  24. I honestly don't think that all countries select and finalize by one date. It wouldn't be fair to places like Germany that have 75 grants to finalize compared to other countries that only have a handful (or to countries with more red tape than others).
  25. SO....how is everyone doing? What have you been doing to pass the time? I'm studying for oral examinations, which is not fun, but distracting, so useful.
