  1. Congrats to all of the Northwestern admits! If you have any questions about the program, the area, or anything else, send me a message!
  2. I had interviews with two schools before being admitted, and they were both over the phone.
  3. Congrats to all the recent admits, but especially those to Northwestern! If you have any questions about the program, Chicago, etc., let me know.
  4. After going through admissions last year, I am tempted to advise you against doing that ... but I know how pointless that would be . Good luck, everyone!
  5. I was advised by a couple of professors at my current institution not to email POIs - they said it really couldn't do me any good. On the other hand, if one of your letter writers knows a POI personally, that might get you somewhere...
  6. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: southern state school Major(s)/Minor(s): political science Undergrad GPA: 3.7 Type of Grad: southern state school Grad GPA: 3.97 GRE: 168/164/4.5 Any Special Courses: Letters of Recommendation: three letters from professors with whom I have worked closely Research Experience: just writing my master's thesis, analyzing data for term papers, etc. Teaching Experience: worked as a TA for three semesters Subfield/Research Interests: american politics, political theory Other: RESULTS: Acceptances($$ or no $$): Northwestern ($$), Wisconsin ($$), UIUC ($$), Washington-Seattle ($$), UT-Austin (no $$) Waitlists: none Rejections: UPenn, Princeton, Ohio State, Virginia (presumed) Pending: none Going to: undecided LESSONS LEARNED: I won't repeat everything that others have said. However, I will say that I believe that allowing a professor to tear apart the first draft of my SOP was the best thing I did for my applications. Promoting myself in that format is not something I am particularly practiced in, so having him point out all of the ways I could be doing a better job of it was essential to putting together a solid application. SOP: I would be happy to share this over PM.
  7. I have declined offers from Washington (Seattle) and UT-Austin.
  8. So, this might be a stupid question, but... What is the most polite/professional way to reject an offer? Should I just fill out the "I am not coming to your school" form, or should I also contact the DGS or a POI? If so, any suggestions on how to word that email?
  9. I was wondering if it is easy to park on the UW campus. Would it be feasible to live further from campus and drive in, or do you really need to bike/take the bus?
  10. Hey, I thought I would jump in the conversation, albeit a little bit late. I'm really attracted to Northwestern, in part because of the methodological flexibility that a couple of you have mentioned. I had an interesting conversation with a POI there the other day; he basically told me that doing mixed methods is going to be a bigger challenge than just doing pure quantitative work, but they were very supportive of those who wish to go that route. I'm also deciding between NW and one other school...the other has higher "rankings," but both seem to place very well, which is what matters at the end of the day, right? As far as where to live, my dad grew up in Evanston, and it really seems that anywhere on the far north side of the city or in the near suburbs is a good place to live. Just depends on if you'd rather be closer to downtown, closer to the campus, or whatever. I won't be able to attend the official visiting weekend, although I will be going at a later date. Too bad I won't get to meet any of you there, but have a great time and let us all know what you think of the program!
  11. That was me, and my primary field is American. I added the theory part because I made it clear in my SOP that it would be my secondary field and a large influence on my empirical work.
  12. Two things: 1) I have been accepted to Northwestern, but I was just curious about the application website, so I checked it and it still says a decision has not been rendered. So I wouldn't take that as a reliable source. 2) The job placement article folks have been discussing here (as well as another one I have seen float around) only deals with job placements at PhD-granting institutions. So not only would a tenure-track position at the state school I am currently attending not count, but neither would a job at a prestigious 4-year institution. I understand that the end goal for many people on this board is a job at one of these top schools, but I am also aware that many would be happy with a position at Beloit College, for example. My current department has only one professor that attended one of the "top four" universities, but they all publish, go to conferences, etc.
  13. Thanks everyone! The email was from the DGS, sent through her assistant.
  14. I am. I claim all rights to Gnome's opinion. I would be willing to negotiate, though.
  15. Congratulations to all of the other admits today!
  16. No status change on the website that I can see.
  17. But doesn't it seem unlikely that publishing their target number would have any real effect on yield?
  18. I'm happy to claim one of the Washington admits as well. BUT - I'm thinking that the 12 refers to Washington's desired incoming class size, not the total number of offers. I know the wording of the letter made it seem otherwise, but doesn't that seem like a very low number? That could easily leave them with an incoming cohort of 4 students.
  19. Does anyone have a guess on a likely date to hear from Virginia?
  20. I'll claim the UIUC :-) Thanks for the good vibes. And a big congrats to everyone else who got offers today! This is probably a stupid question, but...when it comes to mailing in official transcripts, that should only be done once one has accepted an offer, correct?
  21. In case anyone is still wondering, statuses are updated on the Ohio State application website
  22. I'd like to echo the other comments...congrats to all the admits today!
