Can anyone give advice about living near the Upper East Side and Hunter College (68th)? Budget is pretty limited so the cheaper, the better, but I know it's an expensive part of town..

It seems I had a miscommunication with a potential PI, in that she expected me to apply for the masters program and I thought we agreed I would apply for a PhD. She just contacted me to let me know that - oh no - she won't be accepting me for a PhD, only for a masters. Since I would be happy doing a masters first I replied that I'm happy to switch my application. However, just now she let me know that since the deadline is passed the switch is not possible. She suggested that I could apply again next year...but I think I will get a couple offers this year. The offers I expect will be a) not a great research match, I'd have to sort-of switch fields and good fit but very little funding (from 20hr/wk TA/teaching work) requiring me to take out loans (maybe ~10k/year). I'm not sure if this masters program would be funded, but it is an excellent research fit. Don't schools sometimes accept students into programs they do not apply for? Would you just accept the missed opportunity? Should I press for an option this year or wait it out? I'm not getting any younger so I'd like to get started in school ASAP but I know it's still to head into it without a great fit. Any comments are appreciated.

Can anyone tell me about the interview weekend at UC? I've been invited and am deciding what flight to take (ie, take an extra day off work and see more of the city or fly in early the day of). Is the event pretty busy or will I have time to relax/explore on my own? I've never been to Cincinnati. Thanks!

Any current NYC grad students willing to share their budget? What is a good amount of $ you would look for in a funding offer? I know NYC is expensive...

A potential PI contacted me 3 weeks ago to offer me a spot in her lab and to let me know that the graduate school selected me. However, I have yet to hear anything official from the school... should I be worried? I contacted her a week after her original message to me to say I had not heard anything yet and she said she would look into it. Two weeks later..still radio silence. Should I write to her again or keep waiting it out? I would love to work in her lab, but I can't commit to anything before I hear details of my offer from the school. Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!

I also applied to CUNY with no word yet...I am also anxiously wait to hear from UCSD cog psych. Did any of you apply to biology programs as well or just psych/neuro?
