  4. I heard PoI's from University of Chicago will know by the 3rd of Feb. For cultural anthro anyhow.
  5. hmmm. I'm not sure I'd want someone staying with me. Not sure though. I'm really good friends with 2 grad students, one lives with his wife in campus apartments and I think I'd feel out of place. The other, I think Id have to sleep on the couch. I think it would be an imposition personally. That's just me though. I'm older than most students.
  6. Congrats BTKOU! I'm good friends with several of the students there. They are a great bunch!
  7. Anyone heard from NYU?
  8. oh shoot. now im scared to go back and do the same thing.
  9. wow! I knew they had met, I didn't know they had already gotten that far.
  10. Hello all, I was hoping that someone with some experience can answer a question for me. My area of interest is in the field of religious studies, particularly syncretistic religions of Latin America and the Caribbean. I have done some undergrad work with local botanicas and santeros, but nothing in the way of publications, or any real academic work of substance. My question is, would it be beneficial to apply to Latin America and Caribbean MA programs or comparative religion MA programs if my end goal is a PhD in anthropology? I have applied to 2 so far, but there were possibly 2 more I was thinking of applying for as well. I know I have read several debates on these forums regarding the necessity of an MA before applying to doctoral programs. I believe there is a camp that says an MA can only help, and others who think it to be a waste of time and money. Thoughts? Thanks ahead of time!
  11. Not to betray my POI's confidence, but it's been extremely cold there as of late... ...and it sounds like U of Tobago.
  12. congrats Daykid! looks like a lot of programs are starting to respond. I have it on good measure that my first choice meets jan. 31 for the initial vetting of applicants, followed shortly after by department meetings..
  13. Pleased to meet you Danaofdoom! I am applying to Chicago, Columbia, Stanford, Cornell, and NYU to study cultural anthropology. My interests are in folk religion, folk religion in urban areas, and constructing identity through religion. My GPA isn't super stellar either 3.5, 3.6 in major, and my GRE are basically the same as yours. I think I had decent LOR's, field school in Israel last summer, and assistant researcher positions. My SOP probably wasn't that great, and my POI's never really sounded super enthusiastic about working with me. Most replies I received were the standard, "I appreciate you contacting me, and I encourage you to apply, but we have a very selective program, yada, yada..." So that's what worries me the most. I also applied to Tulane and University of Washington, both for MA's in Latin America and Caribbean Studies. So yeah, I said I wouldn't worry about it and just go with the flow, but now I'm definitely stressing. I've decided that if I end up being rejected from every program then I'm working out the year and heading to the Caribbean on my own to live for a few months. That being said, good luck to you!
  14. I have been lurking for the past week, I just thought I'd jump in and say that I'm absolutely dying over here playing the waiting game.
