  1. Who are you interested in working with at A&M?
  2. Well the Texas and Texas A&M application status page specifies that the highest score is important. All the schools that I applied to say that the highest is focused on since there are so many reasons that one score can be lower.
  3. I am fairly certain that the point is so we know who is getting what good/bad news. The results page is anonymous and we cannot ask any further questions. I think this thread is a good idea. I know that I am curious to ask questions if somebody got an interview/acceptance from any school that I am applying to.
  4. I was really interested in looking deeper into the UMASS peace and violence program (especially since that is non-existent in Texas), but the work that Dr. Pietromonaco does was way too interesting to pass on.
  5. @viola: Who are you interested in working with at Amherst? I want to work with Dr. Pietromonaco, but Amherst is definitely a reach school for me. @moralresearcher: I haven't been to Chicago during the winter. I applied to DePaul and weather is my biggest worry. I am from Texas and I don't know what snow really is. I've looked at the results page and saw that last year results for the schools that I am looking at ranged from beginning of Feb all the way to Apr 28, but for the most part results came in the beginning of March.
  6. I really wanted to apply to UIC, but it was more that I wanted to live in Chicago. They didn't have anybody studying close relationships. Yeah I still haven't heard anything. Pretty anxious to say the least...
  7. Thanks for the reply. Yeah I figured the worst that could happen is I would have 4 letters for a few of the schools.
  8. So one of my recommenders has been taking his sweet time with my letters of rec. Two schools deadlines were Jan 1 and they are still missing his letter. One of the schools even emailed him to tell him that they need it yet he still hasn't submitted it. I know he has the letter finished because he submitted for a school that had a deadline on Dec 15. I have one prof that said a while back that he would be willing to help me out if I couldn't find anybody else. Should I ask that prof? I know that most schools don't begin immediately reviewing apps and stuff, but it is really bothering me. Please help!!!
  9. Since I would be working with the person I just said that I am interested in working with them. It doesn't have to be anything amazing. You just want to get your name in their heads. It can't hurt. I turned my third choice into a safety school because the profs were so positive and insistent that I apply after showing them my vita and discussing a few bad points in my app.
  10. I don't know what is customary for other programs, but the first thing I did before applying to a certain school was make sure that a certain professor was accepting students. I am doing social psychology so I am pretty much looking for a mentor, but I would think that a simple email expressing interest could help. If anything it will help them remember your name when they are looking through stacks of applications...
  11. I took it twice and actually scored lower the second time (1270 was the highest). But I know that all the schools that I have applied to only pay attention to the highest overall score no matter when it was taken.
  12. The first time I emailed him he responded, but when I asked for some advice he never said anything. I don't know. Maybe he just gets alot of emails from students and doesn't reply to all?? You are applying to work with Dr. Pietromonaco too?? Well I hope she is looking for more than one student or I would have no chance.
  13. yeah I should probably get one soon. I am just scared of the infamous credit card stories. It says on the UMASS web page that since I am applying to a non-clinical concentration then I can request an interview with Dr. Pietromonaco. I just don't know if that really applies still and if so how do I go about sending that email... I'll figure it out I guess. It doesn't say close relationships on his research interests, but he has a few articles about divorce and when I talked to him I only told him that I am interested in close relationships. I guess I just never really at Stony Brook, but by the time I had looked at Purdue it was after their deadline was long passed. Speaking of deadlines... I cannot believe they are already here. I am so ready to hear SOMETHING. I feel like I have been waiting for far longer than I have. I should start hearing word back from schools within the month!!!
  14. I keep considering getting one of those cards, but I always worry about some how screwing it up. I really wanted to especially before I go to grad school. My adviser said it wouldn't be worth the money invested. Who knows. Well it isn't too focused yet, but I am interested in early marriage emotions and impact on the health of the marriage. From what I understand, Dr. Pietromonaco is also working with the marriages and seeing if cancer can effect the health of the relationship and of the other person. It would be a dream to get on that project. You wouldn't happen to know the qualifications that UMASS is typically looking for would you?? Dr. Richard Lucas. He is a social prof at Mich State. All the work that I had read from him was dealing with divorce (which is another interest of mine).
  15. That is really insane. I saw a guy that I was really interested in graduated from WUSTL and he had been publishing ALOT in close relationships. Unfortunately, he hadn't published anything recently.
  16. I had never heard of couchsurfing.com, but I am going to have to check that out. Maybe just go for fun (especially if they don't check badges for the main talks...). I thought you were talking about the application fees alone. I didn't know that you were counting GRE fees (outrageous) and all that. My adviser suggested 20, but that is just too much to pay when a majority of them would probably just say no. Yeah! Dr. Pietromonaco. I have emailed back and forth with her and she is great. Plus, she is working on a long project that sounds really interesting. I just really don't know if I have what it takes to get into the program. The website says the prof typically gives interviews if requested. I just don't know if that is true. I have emailed Dr. Eastwick, but he told me that he is not sure if he is taking any students so in my statement I put both Dr. Eastwick and Dr. Rholes as my hopefuls. I would prefer Eastwick, but Rholes is accepting one student for sure. I looked at Michigan State, but quit after the prof I was talking to said that a 1300+ was preferred. I am close to that, but it still scared me off.
  17. From what I have been told, the quant is much more important due to the stats aspect. I am sure that every school can be different. A prof from A&M-Commerce has said that most schools won't come out and say that quant is more important because they don't want people blowing off the verbal. I am just hoping that a 750-Q and a 520-V is enough to get me in somewhere.
  18. That is far more work than I was willing to do... I will admit that I went through just about every school on the NRC list (except 1-40 b/c I doubt I would stand a chance of applying to Harvard) and if I couldn't find somebody interested in close relationships I would mark them off my list. I would then make sure that prof was taking on a new student and that was my list. I picked the top 6 based on my interest in the person's work and my interest in the town the school is located. I agree about starting early. Most of my deadlines have passed, but I couldn't imagine rushing trying to get everything in before the deadline. Although, all the schools have already told me that since it takes so long to get all the applications organized that there is no real worry about the deadline.
  19. I actually thought about going to SPSP since my advisor was going, but I would be the only person other than him that is going so it would have been too expensive for the trip alone. That is really lucky though!!! Where all are you applying? I notice the $1500 thing so I guess about 30? I am only applying to six.
  20. It is weird, but the list is based solely on quality. The USNEWS lists consider reputation for half of the equation they use.
  21. I'm also interested in close relationships. Anything specific yet?
  22. I was also planning on taking a bike and using the Knoxville public transit when a bike won't be enough. Does anybody have any info on the Knoxville public transit? It is any good? Reliable?
