  1. Is it really so hard to just get along? Sure you are going to read some posts by some really ignorant people, but just ignore them. Believe it or not, your opinion doesn't mean anymore than anybody else's if all you are trying to do is start/continue problems.
  2. They do have on-campus apartments which I don't know much about. There are a lot of apartment complexes out there, but definitely look at the houses if you are interested in relatively low-cost and close to campus. There are many many houses that are maybe 1/2 mile from the campus and are pretty cheap. If you are concerned with safety then common sense will suit you well in your search. Personally, I would stick to living in College Station. Bryan isn't horrible, but avoid the apartments and stick with houses if you go to Bryan. @joro: The on-campus apartments are a good choice from what I understand. They are primarily grad students and married students if I remember correctly. If you want the on-campus experience then definitely make your way on-campus during the week before classes begin. A&M offers a lot of activities for students that have moved in. I never got to attend these events because of the corps, but my friends have told me amazing things.
  3. I don't think it is really bad at all unless you only applied to the top 50 programs. I applied to 7 schools and only 2 have finished reviewing applications. This site really breeds more angst in applicants than it does to comfort us.
  4. So they want 3 or 4, but accepted 10? I guess they are assuming that at least 6 people are not going to accept they offer. I'd be surprised that anybody would turn down a spot at Kansas.

    Waco, TX

Thank you for all the info! I have to reveal that I am slightly skewed towards Waco since I was born there and still have quite a bit of family in the area (Hillsboro, Bellmead) so I wanted to get some other view points. I have never spent more than 2 hours in the city itself (and that was for a campus visit). I like the location because I would like to stay away from the bigger cities like Dallas/Houston. I know that Baylor provides an on-campus transportation. I don't suppose Waco has something similar or some sort of public transportation, do they? I really wanted to somehow manage to not bring my car with me, but that might not be an option in Waco. The stipend was actually the first thing that attracted me to Baylor, but they eventually showed me some really impressive facilities. The stipend would give me the opportunity to focus on school and not have to worry about money (and hopefully begin saving for later in life).

    Waco, TX

So I get the feeling that NOBODY is applying to Baylor since there isn't even a Waco thread yet. Well I am hoping to go there in the fall and I was wondering if anybody had any information about the university as a student. Also, is there really anything to do in the town? I am hoping that this thread will actually be able to provide info for me and not just lay quiet as the New York City thread gets 100 posts a day...
  7. I really really want to just send an email to the few school that just seem to be stalling the process, but I am just scared that if I did have some smidgen of hope at these schools then my bothering them would just erase all hope entirely. So I just anonymously call the grad secretaries. Remember: if they don't know my name they can't connect my pesky voice to my application!
  8. If you don't mind me asking, how did you phrase your email to your POI? I am trying to work up the guts to email them, but I don't want to say anything that could be interpreted rudely.
  9. Well that more of my doing. I had already knew that my POI had sent out at least 1 interview invitation so I emailed my POI to ask if he had sent out all the invitations. He said that he would not be able to invite me. I haven't received a formal rejection yet, but I am sure it will be on it's way eventually.
  10. I don't suppose you have heard anything from Tennessee have you?
  11. haha that is pretty funny. how many were on there if you don't mind me asking?
  12. I didn't get the names/emails. Was it like a "talk to other applicants" sort of thing? Was I on that list? It wouldn't be too difficult to try and figure out my email from my sn. I called DePaul yesterday and they said that my application was being reviewed and if I didn't hear anything by the end of February then to call them. When I was in Chicago last spring I visited the campus and they said they typically get about 15 applications and accept 3. They apparently always accept 3.
  13. So I called the Houston secretary today and had a great moment... I asked if there were any updates and she told me that only 1 prof has told her any names of accepted students. I asked if that professor just happened to be Dr. Acitelli and she said "Yes!" and excitedly asked "Is this Matthew??". Well my name is not Matthew... It was a great way to find out that I was probably not getting an offer from Houston.
  14. I called Tennessee today and they have sent out a few individual interview requests. As stated before they do not have an official weekend for interviews, but they have sent out some individual requests.
  15. Well I hate to say this, but that is a relief for me. I applied to work with Dr. Acitelli. Sorry about Dr. Knee not taking students.
  16. I really like College Station a lot. As far as cool places to hang out are concerned, it depends on what you like to do. There is always things going on on-campus. Off campus they have North Gate which is just a 1/4-mile stretch with a bunch of restaurants and a few bars that host concerts. Dancing is HUGE down there. Everybody that I know that is down there goes country dancing. There are 3 places specifically for country dancing that I can think of and probably more. If that is not your thing then you should probably stay away from the College Station Thursday nightlife. Austin/Houston are both only two hours away and are not difficult drives. I went there for two years during my undergrad and it would have been an amazing experience if I hadn't joined the Corps of Cadets.
  17. Was it Dr. Acitelli that contacted you?
  18. Honestly, I have no problem calling. I haven't talked to the secretaries before and I am sure that they can't tell the difference between my voice and somebody else's. I just ask for the status and if they were to say something else other than "still reviewing" THEN I would give them my name.
  19. I am thinking that the acceptance from Houston might be a fake. I called the secretary and she said she was under the impression that the faculty are still reviewing and that no word has gone out yet.
  20. Yes please. Who was your POI if you don't mind me asking? Great. Thank you. I was actually wondering if they did a formal interview, but I would always forget to ask when I would call.
  21. I really hope so... A&M should be calling people very soon to invite people early enough to make arrangements to come to interview weekend.
  22. Has anybody heard anything from Texas A&M/Tennessee?
  23. My adviser told me about one girl when he was in grad school at Kansas that would just take other peoples ideas and tweak them. One girl was really interested in African American studies and she did some really grandiose study. Well this girl did the exact same study, but with Asian women. You know what's crazy? A few of the Yale results said that they had over 10,000 applicants for the year. I did not apply there, but I looked it up and with their $95 application fee they made almost $1 million on application fees alone. And that is just the psychology department!
