  1. You guys, I'm exhausted already and it's only the second day. I started the day off by running paperwork around campus, then I sent out emails and stuff and got rosters ready for the class I TA for tomorrow... And I'm just so very tired.

I've been readjusting to the sound of my upstairs neighbor's footsteps at night, since being back here. He's a nice guy and seriously just has heavy footsteps cause he's a dude. And I'm just an obnoxiously light sleeper. And the building we're in is cheaply built. So we'll see how I sleep tonight. I think it'll get better as the semester goes on.

Also so anxious cause I saw a couple Davis acceptances on the board. Praying to hear from them soon.

Hi Everyone! Happy Wednesday. This is my first post. I've applied to several PhD programs so if anyone has any info to share that would be fantastic! I wish you all the best and I will be sure to provide any info and insight as it comes along.

    Programs--

    Brown University (Sociology, PhD)

Harvard University (Sociology & Social Policy, Joint PhD)

Yale University (Sociology & African American Studies, Combined PhD)

    Boston College (Sociology, PhD)

    Northeastern (Sociology, PhD)

    Boston University (Sociology, PhD)

    Brandeis University (Sociology, PhD)

    University of Georgia (Sociology, PhD)

    Brandeis buddy! <3

In the past few years, Brandeis has sent out acceptances in early February. (like around the 7th to 10th range)

Best of luck to you and welcome!!

Okay, I just wanted a place to rant for a moment. I know that for Jan 4th applications, I still (likely) have a bit of a wait ahead of me. There are literally no acceptances for my field on gradcafe. There are only early t0 mid March rejections with two late LATE Feb acceptances from '07 and '10 for the same department but an entirely different concentration. Right now I'm working on my thesis from a new state. It's hard to focus without my cohort and with the added stress of waiting to hear back. I moved because the Bay area was way expensive and now I'm also looking for jobs here.

For those of you still working on your thesis, how is it going? Is anyone working on a thesis remotely or with limited adviser contact?

Waiting is so. Hard. Especially when you don't have anyone in the same position as you waiting it out!

And yes, I'm working on one! It's going pretty well so far. When I started it last summer, I had to work on it while my advisor was in Africa for the whole summer. So her email access was limited! Since it was only the beginning of the thesis though, it was mostly literature review work I could do on my own.

I'm pretty sure this means no for us........they would have done it all at once.

Hey, you never know. Acceptances don't always go out all at once, not even for Davis (last year, most went out at once, yes, but there was one posting where someone got an acceptance several days after the bulk of them went out).

Two years ago, a good friend of mine thought she might not have made the cut, but she awoke one morning to a pleasant surprise: a notification of acceptance days after the bulk of acceptances were sent out. She's now there at Davis as a grad student.

It's not over until we get that rejection notice, friend =) We'll hang in there together!

Hi!  I created an account just to reply to this thread.  I was the one who was just accepted to UC Davis!

To answer your question, it was a personal email from someone on the admissions committee.  She said they're working on the funding still, but they wanted to let me know about their decision asap.

Hope that helps!  Good luck to you all!

You're so kind to create an account just to reply to my question!

First of all: CONGRATULATIONS!! *Shares some of the cookies from earlier in the thread with you* I'll make some fresh cookies for the thread tomorrow ...

Second of all: Thank you for answering my question! I sure hope to join you at the accepted kids table!! :D

    Claim UT-A rejection.

I am not so active in the forum so perhaps no one cares. However, I still cannot express how sad I am about the results.

The fact when I heard my application got into the final cut but still lost before the finishing line is extremely depressing.

I thought my application was strong and a good fit with the program. Sadly I cannot say a word in the judgment process.

*huuuuuggggssssss* I care!!! I'm here for you if you need someone to talk to/shoulder to cry on. *makes you your favorite kind of tea/coffee*

Let us know if there's anything we can do. This season isn't over!

*vanishes, for now, to take care of school stuff*

I've been lurking for a bit but just now joining the conversation. This is my first year applying. I only applied to UC Berkeley and feel a little insecure compared to you all. I am braced for rejection but hoping for the best. UCB is my top and at this point only choice because of their availability of a gender concentration, their family inclusive campus culture,  and distance to Sacramento. I'm taking this as a learning experience and I am learning SO much from you all. Maybe next year, I'll apply for multiple programs. If rejected, I'll def work with UCB to find out what I need to do to strengthen my app. All of you great posts have been super helpful as I anxiously wait to hear back!

I'll list some info but if someone could PM me how you did your amazing signatures, that be great!

Masters in Social Work, lots of direct service and program management experience (particularly with survivors of sexual violence and the LGBT community), currently adjunct instructor in the field of diversity, I am a queer identified single mom and survivor myself, strong LOR, mediocre GRE, research interests are community responses to gender based violence within the lgbt community and the impact of intersecting identities, lots a presentation experience  (media and community), no publications.

I think it's really great that you found such a great fit with Berkeley! I truly hope you get in, and I wish you the best of luck! I bet your statement of purpose was awesome, and that should resonate well with the adcomm.

As for how to do your signature, follow these directions:

    1. at the top-right corner of your computer screen, you'll see a little bubble with your profile pic/avatar/forum pic and your username right next to that.

    2. Click on your username in the top-right corner.

    3. Go to "account settings."

    4. Under "account settings," there is a tab called "signature."

    5. Click that and create your signature

    6. Click "save."

    Voila!

Haha @HopefulSocPhD I didn't notice you copied my signature until now because I've rarely been on my pc recently! I think that's awesome, and I'm flattered that you thought my signature layout was that nice! :D

Haha I don't really know what everyone is talking about. I haven't gotten anything new! Just the three I had before: Austin, Minnesota, Ohio State. If that's interesting to anyone I am happy to elaborate :)

Hopefully we all get some good news this week!

Still, that's great! Yay! *still offers you cake* I hope so too! I'd love a nugget of good news after that rejection today!

@gingin6789 thanks for letting me know.  i haven't heard from them yet, so here's hoping.

in other news: rejection is protection.  you don't want anyone that doesn't want you. good luck in your endeavors <3

That is such a great thought to keep in mind! Thank you for your support!

@raaawrThank you for your support as well! :-)

  10. @HopefulSocPhDHaha you are so sweet. Thank you for the support and the laugh.

@isthisagoodideatthank you for your support, too! The publications aren't published yet, but they're in the works! Sometimes it just comes down to fit. Maybe one of the profs I wanted to work with wasn't taking on any new students *sigh* but still, I'm glad you and others think I am a strong applicant! That makes my day :-)

@redhillgirlAwww Thank you!! Seriously, you guys are helping me feel so much better.

I can't speak for all programs, but I don't think this is true at all. I've never served on a committee, or heard of a committee, where we already had a spot filled before the committee read the applications and voted. It is in these meetings where there might be discussion of a particular student who we've met or know or whose advisor made a personal call, but those are not shoo-ins, it's simply additional information to consider. Also, programs accept more people than they have space for, so if they want 6-10 people, they're making offers to 12-30 (or more, depending on how many they net).

I know it's a stressful time, but it is very early in the game. Many of the top programs who have accepted people will continue to make offers off their waitlists (even if students haven't officially been notified of such a status). Most places that can't guarantee funding now will find money later in the season. People doing interviews will schedule later interviews if they are unable to fill their cohorts with the earlier invites. Programs don't close up shop until April 15th. Don't lose hope until late March. There are certainly sociology superstars (and perfectly content - and employed - non-superstars) who were brought in off waitlists later in the game. Hang in there, everyone.

Your post is just what so many of us needed to hear! Thank you!

  12. Artsy, best of luck! You've got this!!

Pink, I feel lucky, too, that only a few of my programs do interviews. However, the interviews for the programs I applied to are less like "sit down one-on-one" and more like "get to know profs and current grad students over delicious dinners, campus tours, and tours of the town."so that's nice, at least!

In other news, I go back to my university tomorrow... Which means back to my basement apartment two hours away from my husband (he works at another college). I'm gonna miss him, and the sunlight flooding in from the many windows in his apartment!

I just joined (after lurking for quite a while) so I could respond to this. I haven't heard anything good or bad yet either. I just wanted you to know that although there have been quite a few acceptances posted on here, you're not the only one who is in limbo sweating out the excruciating wait. :)

However, I applied to UT Austin and didn't hear anything Friday so that is probably my first rejection. :(

In the same boat as you all. Saw three Emory interviews and two Rutgers interviews on the board, but I'm still holding onto hope because I know I'm not rejected until I receive the official rejection notice!!

But still ... being in this limbo state is HARD.

But CONGRATULATIONS to the new UCSB admits I saw on the board today!

Not a rejection but still worth at least an honorable mention.

    • Intergalactic applicant for new program in CMC. Looking to study computers from a critical Hegelian perspective. Notified of interview via Snapchat.

I saw that and screenshot it! I love it! Snapchat notification and Hegelian perspective ftw :-P
