Ah ok, thanks for the clarification.  I'd agree with TMP, if you can go study in this language program for a year with all expenses paid, and have a great experience in the region you're interested in studying in, I'd jump at the opportunity.  There's a small chance that you might burn bridges with your target institution, but I personally wouldn't pass up a guaranteed spot for the hope that something might materialize in this other program by July.  You could always contact the MA program and politely tell them that you need to make a decision by x date, and if they're unable to give you a response by then than you'll have to withdraw your application, but that you certainly hope to reapply after your year of Chinese.

I chose University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  I had a situation where I had to decide between amazing funding (30k) and better placement record.  I chose placement... along with not too much money (18K) but I've been really good at applying for fellowships and scholarships so far and 18k is decent anyways for grad school.

Committed to UChicago. It was a tough choice for a few reasons (great programs/advisors at each school that accepted me, similar/competitive funding offers (one was better than that offered at Chicago, as they guaranteed six years vs. five), diverse and intellectually stimulating environments), but I felt a more immediate connection with the faculty and current students at Chicago. Also, Chicago was the most ideal living situation of my choices.

I'll be starting a PhD at the University of Virginia in the fall. I'm really happy with my choice. It was tough because I got off the waitlist at William and Mary and Rutgers shortly after I took the spot at UVA, but this is definitely the best program for me and I wouldn't have accepted if I wasn't 100%.

    Attending: University of Virginia
Accepted: University of Connecticut, William and Mary (off waitlist), Rutgers (off waitlist)
Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania (interviewed)

I've decided to attend Duke! I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to study with amazing scholars. I also got a summer job with Duke that I'll start at the end of May. Its in South Africa! I'll get the chance to work with undergraduates while conducting my own research. Can't wait!

Anyway, I'm out. It seems like I made a mistake posting here, and I do sincerely apologize. To those of who you responded in earnest, even if it was to tell me how I'd made a dumb mistake, I appreciate it. There were some interesting responses and it's cool to hear others' experiences. My grad school experience, which was, believe it or not, really fun and fulfilling, was isolating at times, for reasons having to do with both my program and myself.
To those of you who called me names...don't do that. Just as a general life rule, I mean.
    See ya.

Good to have some company on board. I focus on Mexican-American and Latina/o history as well. You hit the usual suspects on your list as many scholars in our field are located in the Southwest (Mostly the UCs).
I would suggest looking into Michigan. Anthony Mora has done some great work in what you're interested in. The Latina/o Studies program there is also very strong. I visited just last week and was very happy to see how interdisciplinary the history department is there. The University of Chicago may also be of interest for you since Ramon Gutierrez teaches there. You can also get tuition waivers to these schools (and the aforementioned Ohio State) through the CIC Free App program. Here's the link: https://www.cic.net/students/freeapp/introduction.
Lastly, I assume you're applying to Stanford to work with Albert Camarillo. Unfortunately, he is set to retire the next couple of years and is no longer taking new students. It'll be exciting to see whom they hire to replace him.

UCSD! I received a great funding package...but...trying to find a place (that's dog friendly) is stressing me out. Hoping to go out in June to get the logistics of the move finalized. I wish I could fast-forward these next few months of figuring out deposits/moving/downsizing and just start with classes already.

I'm attending Vanderbilt this Fall. The funding is great, and I really loved it when I visited a couple of weeks ago. Now I need to find an apartment in Nashville! ?

Anthony Mora, and a few others at U Michigan, work on borderland issues. His latest book Border Dilemmas might also be worthwhile reading depending on your period of focus.

johnnycomelately reacted to ashiepoo72 in Are publications needed for admittance to top PhD programs?
@knp I wouldn't worry! I'm someone who started my program with an MA and still haven't published. I definitely had tons of other experience teaching and such, but the work you do in the PhD should prep you and give you the opportunities to publish and present at conferences. Also, I haven't noticed much difference between the people who came in with an MA and those with just a BA, other than most of the MA people having a clearer idea of what they want to write for their dissertation. I'm actually super impressed with my cohort members who only came in with a BA--I wasn't even close to their level when I finished mine, and they're just as smart and committed as the rest of us.
Programs accepted you because you've got what it takes to succeed.
