  1. I'll be starting a PhD at the University of Virginia in the fall. I'm really happy with my choice. It was tough because I got off the waitlist at William and Mary and Rutgers shortly after I took the spot at UVA, but this is definitely the best program for me and I wouldn't have accepted if I wasn't 100%. Attending: University of Virginia Accepted: University of Connecticut, William and Mary (off waitlist), Rutgers (off waitlist) Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania (interviewed)
  2. I accepted an offer at UVA but never withdrew my application from Rutgers because I got no communication and assumed it wouldn't matter. They accepted me out off the waitlist (apparently) last week and I declined. Congrats to whomever gets the spot, the funding was good
  3. I am declining UConn and removing myself from the waitlist at William and Mary. Accepting University of Virginia
  4. Cool! What are your areas? I'm colonial America, as I'm sure many others are.
  5. Hey! Anyone else admitted to UVA going to the department visit days Feb 28 - March 1? Looking forward to meeting people!
  6. Ehhhhh there were good parts and bad parts. Kathleen Brown who I was super psyched to talk to didn't seem too excited about me, but I didn't feel like I bombed it.
  7. I was panicking because they were a little late calling me, but they eventually did. I wouldn't worry that they decided against you, though. They're interviewing twice as many people as they can accept so I'm sure they didn't suddenly reject you without an interview.
  8. I haven't heard anything about a cancellation! Considering it's supposed to be in 10 minutes I certainly hope they didn't forget to tell me!
  9. Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I have a skype interview scheduled with UPenn tomorrow. My field is early American history, and all I really know is I'll be talking to Daniel Richter (though Kathleen Brown is the faculty member I'm hoping to work with since her research is right in my wheelhouse). Can anyone who has done this interview/knows the faculty help me figure out what to expect?
  10. Hoooo doggy there were so many. The most heinous was probably that I left "Writing Sample: University of Virginia" at the top of the sample I sent to HARVARD One I totally deserved: my roommate sent me her CV and I stole her format and filled in my own information. I neglected to realize until I'd sent in two applications that her last name was still on the header in the top corner of every page. I also learned too late that William and Mary's garbage history supplement doesn't allow you to copy and paste. I had to retype my whole statement into their box. Once I had closed the typing window and was about to send the pdf, I discovered I had made a typo that made me sound like a 1870s prospector, something like "I was pluggin in names to the census." I had to retype the whole thing AGAIN until 3AM. But I got in to UVA last week so I must have avoided coming across as a dumbass on that one.
