  1. Hey, have you ever been to Tenagrah? My friend Gilad was there right after the walls fell.
  2. Epidemiology is my field, but I play chess for fun. Also existential psychology is the closest thing I have to religion, and I read a lot of Rollo May, Paul Tillich, Otto Rank, Viktor Frankl and others. Apparently I'm drawn more toward the German/Austrian tradition than French existentialists like Sartre and Camus.
  3. Is it common for a school to accept an applicant without an interview? What schools are known to always/sometimes/never do interviews? How should an applicant interpret not hearing *anything* well into February? I think these are general interest questions, but I'm also curious because none of my 6 schools have offered formal interviews (BU, Harvard, Hopkins, Michigan, UIC, UW). UW waitlisted me without an interview.
  4. matriculation party (When I discovered The Grad Cafe last night, I thought this thread was random and dumb; now I totally get it)
  5. This website says that interviews aren't required for JHSPH, but... "an interview may be required prior to an admissions decision." The Grad Cafe results page shows that several PhD applicants had phone interviews in the last 2 weeks. Can you tell if it's supposed to help the admissions committee decide about people on the fence, or is it to feel out potential research with their top applicants? Maybe it just depends on the case? Thoughts?
  6. Congrats everyone. I'm still waiting on 5 out of 6 PhD programs in epidemiology. It sounds like master's programs are decided first. For my part, the University of Washington deadline was December 15 and I got notified about being waitlisted on February 5. The rest of the schools' deadlines (in my signature) were either December 1 or 15, except for UIC which was February 1. Question for Johns Hopkins applicants: What's the deal with the phone interview? This website says that interviews aren't required, but... "an interview may be required prior to an admissions decision." The Grad Cafe results page shows that several people had phone interviews in the last 2 weeks. Can you tell if it's supposed to help them decide about people on the fence, or is it to make more solid plans with their top applicants?
  7. I wouldn't just dismiss the vocab words, especially if you're already feeling confident on the quantitative section. A vocab flashcard app on my phone was probably my single most fruitful way to spend an hour. I was really surprised at how many of the words showed up on the test, but maybe that's just me. Overall I read a GRE prep book cover-to-cover about a month before the test, and I took 2 practice tests in the last week. Between that, the flashcards and refreshing some math concepts, that's all I did. I got 168/160/4.5 (V/Q/W). If I had it to do over with limited time to study, I'd take more practice tests. Funny handle, by the way
  8. I was fine waiting for the first two months, but now I just sit around daydreaming about imaginary acceptance/rejection letters. The problem is that I get legitimately HAPPY or SAD depending on what I'm daydreaming about, but then I sort of wake up and realize it's all in my head. It's really exhausting. Very funny that I'm not the only one to start compulsively checking junk mail. Seriously, has anybody actually heard of someone missing a letter because of a junk mail filter? This website is a lifesaver.
