  1. My actual doctor came back from vacation and looked at my X-rays, turns out I may have multiple ulcers. Either it's H. Pylori or horrible genetics.

Sucks. This has been a really rough year for you.

  2. If you had to eat a raw frog today, would you do it in the morning or keep putting it off?

Can I make frog pepperoni? Pepperoni is technically raw as it's uncooked.

I'm with you, iphi. A graduate degree may be good training, but I'm more about learning skills than I am about polishing my pedigree.

Got that last semester. It had been years since I last had the flu. Knocked me down hard. You have my sympathy. Also, ibuprofen was the greatest thing ever.

  9. Is it wrong to submit applications just days before the deadline? I heard a weird rumor today on CNN. Thoughts?

    1. Vene

      Vene

As long as everything is in by the deadline it shouldn't make any difference.

  10. Is the statement of diversity as important as the personal statement? I worry if it's going to be weaker than my SOP. HELP!

    1. Vene

      Vene

It's an optional document. Only make a diversity statement if it will help you. It's not meant to be something difficult.

I didn't even fill out a diversity statement.

  13. How... do you plan a wedding in grad school?

    1. Vene

      Vene

Book a venue and schedule somebody to officiate. You probably want a photographer and maybe somebody to cater it. Oh, and send out invitations to anybody you want to show up.

Basically, the same as if you weren't in grad school.

I assure you, there are hunters in Ohio. You just gotta get away from the core metro.

  15. It's frustrating when the TA tells you how she wanted you to answer the question AFTER she has graded it.

    1. Vene

      Vene

It can also be really hard to direct students to an answer without outright giving them the right one.

And, yes, it is definitely a learning experience being a TA. It's not like we're really given much training to be an educator, so we're pretty much figuring it out as we go.

Interviews add stress, but at least you get some feedback. It was so nice getting an interview invitation in December, really helped to keep my morale high. Then I got a decision from the university about a week after actually going to the interview in January. Having that single yes was enough for me to not really worry about what other universities said.

  17. Question, as grad students do you look for professors who are "easy" or more challenging to get more "bang for your buck"?

    1. Vene

      Vene

I'm ok with some difficulty, as long as the class is useful. Otherwise I don't care as I'd rather spend my time in the lab.

  18. It is extremely weird to read your letters of recommendation and see yourself through someone else's eyes.

    1. Vene

      Vene

I got a letter that way. My boss sent it in and then she gave me a copy of it.

  19. Part of me really wishes I would have done the Law School/SW program.

    1. Vene

      Vene

There's no reason you can't do law school after your current degree. You can also talk to the law school at your current university to see if they can help you if you really want a dual degree.

  21. How do I get my energy back? I just feel like I want to sleep all the time even on weekends when I can sleep in a little longer. I have 0 energy.

    1. Vene

      Vene

Yes, go with the healthy eating and exercise. That is the absolute best way to maintain energy levels. Caffeine can be useful, but if you're relying upon it you have a deeper issue which needs to be addressed.

  22. has it been stressful balancing my relationship and grad school, yes. was it worth it that my fiance moved across the country with me: without.a.doubt. wouldn't change anything.

    1. Vene

      Vene

I am actually so glad that I'm entering into graduate school married. It provides a little bit of stability to my life and she helps me out so much.
