  1. I use a 15.6 laptop as my desktop and recenly bought an Asus Transformer Book 32gb (I added a 32gb sd card). Mine came with a removable keyboard that has 500gb external memory. It's a full working tablet computer soI have windows 8 and I can install anything. I just installed the old CS6 Adobe Suite (Photoshop, illustrator....). I got it for reading PDF's and working on things at school. School hasn't started yet so I can't tell you how it's working out in that aspect. But so far I like it and I feel it will work out. The only come I see are: 1. Trying to get accustomed to such a small keyboard 2. Microsoft doesn't have a wide array of apps like Apple and Android
  2. I use to love my physical planner.I decided to try and reduce the amount of paper I use this school year. I've started using Google calendar for the big things and Wunderlist for my tasks. On Wunderlist I have a folder for my job, home errands, funding opportunities, and each course. So far I like it because I can write as long a list as I want and its still organized. And I can quickly set a reminder, change a due date, add/remove from my checklist without using an eraser or whiteout. I feel more organized and I feel that it will be a perfect set up once school starts.
  3. I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's recommendations! Now I've found that I like Timbuk2 Candybar backpack. It has everything I need and more.
  4. 1. Head of a non-profit 2. United Nations Urban Planner 3. Artist (singer/songwriter/musician) 4. Professor
  5. I feel ya. Gradschool....it seems surreal... *Cue Queen* Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide no escape from reality. At times I catch myself looking over the department website, school website, driving routes, and the college paraphernalia. But I stop myself. I have one month left to earn my bachelor's degree. I need to stay focused and in the present. I can get excited after finals week. I have all summer to freak out and revel! I also have friends that are still waiting for a final say from the grad programs. I feel horrible getting excited in front of them. It feels like I would be rubbing it in.
  6. I'm a new local Bruin too! Congrats to you both! I agree with Cocunut Water about the traffic. It can be horrible but you learn to live with it. I live by Koreatown and it takes about an hour to get to campus with the regular traffic. It's not a big deal for me. So if you're okay with some traffic you can find more affordable housing in other la regions. Good luck!
  7. - had coffee - had alcohol - smoked/drugs - donated blood - don't have my driver's license - ate sushi - never been across the altlantic (visited europe, asia, africa....) - can't swim
  8. Hello!! I assume you are graduating this year. Which school did you choose?
  9. Did anyone attend the Columbia open house?
  10. I was also accepted by GSAPP's MSUP and I've also been wondering about funding. We would really appreciate a current student or alum's insight. Thank you!!
  11. I've been accepted to USC and UCLA! I am now waiting to hear back from Columbia. I'm glad the application/decision process is almost over!!!
  12. I know what you mean. We get so comfortable with what we have like the people, program, campus, food, lab, colleagues, professors, and more! And now you find yourself realizing that you kind of have to start over. But I feel we have an amazing opportunity 'starting over'. We will gain new experiences, friends, colleagues, professors, food, labs, knowledge......and the list goes on. But there will always be one constant, you will always be you. Good luck on your new adventures!
  13. I looked at the Associate School of Collegiate Planning (ASCP) 2013 Guide. It's free! http://www.acsp.org/education_guide/education_and_careers_in_planning
  14. Congrats Neeko, oaklandbex, and sklar! I have friends that haven't heard back from UCLA either. I haven't had any emails or application updates from them. I received a phone call from the department. You should be hearing back soon!! I have no idea when Columbia will let us know where we stand!
  15. I got rejected from UC Berkeley and accepted to UCLA last week. Still waiting to hear from USC, MIT and Columbia. According to Gradcafe we've had one USC postal service acceptance go out. According to the MIT website we should be hearing from them during the first week of April. Good luck to everyone! \o/
  16. My statement of purpose and letters of recommendation have helped me so far. 1. Start your SOP early! 2. Consider writing more than one SOP or customizing it for each school. 3. Please have other people read your SOP and CV/Resume. Don't be afraid to show other people your work. I would suggest starting with other students in your program applying to grad school and work your way up to your advisor. And it's nice to have another student to talk to about the grad school anxieties and share the application process.
  17. I was rejected on Valentine's Day. As soon as I had woken up I checked my gmail and there it was. I was disappointed and began assuming the worst. But everything will work out! My mentor constantly tells me that life will go on. Have a plan B prepared but hope for the best. Good luck!
  18. Same here! I have a love/hate relationship with GradCafe. But I can't help myself.
  19. I was walking to school and was trying to call my father (no response) so I made sure my ringer was set on high and continued walking. A few minutes later my phone starts ringing and I assumed it was my father. It was one of my top 3 informing me that I had been accepted into the program. I burst into tears and had to sit down on a curb to get a hold of myself.
