  1. I think it all depends on how important cheaper tuition fees, more course options, a good co-op program, and living at home are to you, relative to location. Montreal is a fantastic city! If I could, that's where I'd go. That being said, I applied where I did purely based on location (and fit within that city). I turned down a better funded offer because it would have been a long commute. I did it that way because what was #1 for me was living with my husband. So no, I don't think it is silly to make location a strong factor in your decision.
  2. Seriously?? Following this logic we should all be farmers, seamstresses and carpenters. I can survive without my iPhone, but sure as hell can't without food...
  3. I officially accepted my offer from York University! It was a difficult decision because I received better funding from another school but ultimately, I opted from the much shorter commute. I think that will give me a better quality of life. Anyway, it was an enormous relief to finally make a decision. Thank you all for the amazing information and support and good luck!
  4. Check out/post in this thread I got great info there! I'm also moving to Toronto this fall, but going to York.
  5. If this interests you, I highly recommend Sherbooke if you don't want to be in the big city. I'm finishing up my undergrad there and I love the town. It is also a good starting location to travel around.
  6. Anyone else heading to York this fall? I just accepted their offer for a masters in Sociology.
  7. Wow! That's incredible! Couch to 5k is such a good program. I've been eating well and it's so nice. I feel really good. And it's amazing how fast I starting feeling better.
  8. MA student here... Did it say how we would receive our results?
  9. Any current, past or future students? I got an acceptance via email that promised an official package would be in the mail... But I'm still waiting. I did, however, get a copy of the contents of the initial email. Was that the official package? Because it didn't contain any info about funding. Also, to anyone with insider info, is the one-year timeline for the MA realistic? Doesn't seem like enough time to me to actually complete a thesis. And if it isn't, what does falling part-time in the second year do for funding (provided I actually get any ). Anyway, I'd really appreciate some help making this decision...
  10. I just watched that episode! Brennan failed hers too But do you honestly think the interns are realistic representations of grad students?
  11. Problematic is the right word. I'm in my last semester of UG and I'm taking four courses. One of them is just so pointless... I have my final presentation on tuesday and I've been trying to find the motivation to work on it all weekend. Let's just say I haven't found it. Thank goodness I am the first to present and then I can just show up and enjoy everyone else's presentation for the next few weeks. Two other of my courses still seem relevant so those I'm still motivated for. The fourth is easy and kind of fun. I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one feeling this way...
  12. Yup! I didn't actually get the email because it bounced back but when I spoke to the secretary she said she had tried to send it on sunday.
  13. Good luck!!! You'll do great! And enjoy it!

    Thanks for the recommendations RunnerGrad!
  16. This! With a passion. The only place I can handle it is in homemade tuna salad.

That's exactly why it's not happening this year! I've convinced him to wait so we can see where the markets headed (and us too!). I've experienced Toronto traffic once and it was enough to make me reconsider Toronto all together....
  18. That colour rule is genius! I will try to implement it. I find portion size to be one of the hardest things when cooking for one, aside from actually finding the motivation to cook at all. I don't want to go hungry so I always make a tiny bit more, but then it ends being too little for leftovers, which I'm not a fan of. And then I eat more than I need to. Typing that out made me realize that it probably wouldn't be too hard to fix that habit! Another thing to work on!

RunnerGrad - Thanks for sharing your opinion. Would you have any non-city recommendations for us? My husband is not a city guy and would actually really like to buy rather than rent. For my first year we will rent but we will definitely be reevaluating our situation next year.

I guess we all make compromises sometimes. And at the end of the day we all just have to do what is best for us. Anyway, thanks again for all the info. I appreciate your honesty! It really is an odd location. I can see why they aren't downtown but did they really have to go that far? I hope I love it as much as you do, despite the location and commute.

You guys are great! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Sukipower - that sounds like an awful commute. Although it's nice to think of it as time to read, I know myself too well... Our priorities are: 1 - affordability 2 - commute length 3 - proximity to basic necessities I like a nice neighbourhood feel, with little shops and cafes, but could not care less about nightlife.
  22. Thanks for the encouragement! I generally enjoy cooking but I find that doing it for one is such a drag... I also have a really inconvenient schedule for regular suppers and I all too often end up buying food that I shouldn't. I just can't get a hang of packing suppers to eat before class. I hate eating supper really early but later isn't any better. Also, great idea about eating smaller meals more often. I think that might be something my schedule would go well with. Any suggestions for recipes I should try out?
