https://m.facebook.com/groups/402035533241241- very active group for SLPs working in the school setting. I've been on the group for ~1 year, and have seen the highs and lows of daily life as a school SLP.

SLP.reddit.com - another great resource for SLPs working in a variety of settings.

There's also a speech reads book club on goodreads with some interesting books that are to be discussed!

I agree with twinguy re: contacting departments. If I had not done that, there would have been no way for UTD to know who I was or that I had the background that would allow them to take a chance on me!

    1. I'm not sure, but I think classes are all day. They don't recommend working or commuting, and instead renting a place in redlands. I'm not sure about the practicum schedule, but I'm sure they make it work with classes.

    2. Faculty seem welcoming. They invite students to work on research, and have a thesis option.

    3. Apparently you request location, and they find a place for you. So they have hookups in Hawaii, NYC, not just the Empire.

    Sure!

As I said before, Redlands is 2 hours east of LA. You take I-10 (or 210 if you're coming from the valley, 57 from OC) past the suburbs of LA and San Bernandino County.

The campus is small-ish, but very nice, with lots of green lawns. It was surprisingly quiet for a weekday evening though.

The program is ~$30K a year. In field students start in August but out of fields start in January.

It has classes and practica for both schools and hospitals. Your medical externships can be done anywhere, even Hawaii.

They have a water cooler that they are very proud of.

Let me know if you have more questions!

Maybe they should send acceptances by telegram, rejections by semaphore, and waitlists by smoke signal. THATS old-fashioned lol.

I am so glad I don't know your classmates. Do they not realize how hard it is to get into grad school? It's not like applying to undergrad, where decent grades and extracurriculars will get you into a fine college.

The way I see it, from November to January, while your classmates are scrambling to take the GRE, write essays, get letters, and balance class work, you'll be much calmer, given all of the research you have done.

And this time next year, you'll have more acceptances than your friends. It all gets better!

Thank you so much for the detailed description of the program! The dedicated, personable faculty, individualized attention, research commitment, and urban location is exactly what I am looking for in a program.

I made a spreadsheet about program details, length, application deadlines, etc and I have sent it to everyone I know. They all find it helpful, not stressful. There's just so much info and no one who has compiled it...

I personally am not sure of my identity as a PoC (I'm Indian), but I have also noticed that the field is overwhelmingly female (asha says 95% of SLPs are female). I think part of the reason I would like to enter the schools is to be in an environment in which they don't see many guys.

You aren't a car, a phone, or some kind of product to be "marketed" to grad committees. You are a person with a lot going for you. I would focus on keeping your grades up, and choosing extracurriculars that you are passionate about, not those that you think will secure admission into a college.

Let's lighten up the mood by posting music pertinent to this stressful season. I hope this is allowed in this forum!

This song has been in my head throughout the admissions process:

Edit: wrong link. I was NOT thinking of a Bollywood song!

My phone stopped remembering my Emerson portal details. I think it got tired of loading the same portal (with the same lack of decision) 7 times a day.

I can't imagine it would help this late in the game. If for whatever reason you find yourself reapplying, I recommend making contacts well before the applications are due.
