Live near a metro stop. I live in North Hollywood. Takes 30 minutes on metro to get to either HSC or UPC. The metro pass is $100 for the entire semester and it's unlimited so it is very economical. It also allows you to read on the metro instead of having to devote time to driving.
  2. I lived with about 5 different female roommates and I am a male. It is fine. There weren't any clashes, there weren't any sexcapdes, there wasn't any sexual tension, etc. Although, I typically did my own thing cause I was quite introverted, but I did hang out with them quite a bit when I lived with them. All-in-all, I prefer to live with males as roommates. I can be more of my natural self, which sounds weird, but I definitely have to have some filter when I live with a female.
  3. In my specific PhD program at USC, we all heard back through letters whether it was an acceptance or rejection. Best of luck.
  4. I drove 1.5 hours with my girlfriend to go to my home city to meet my mom for a crab feed. At the crab feed, my mother notified me that a letter had come from the University that I applied to. I had eaten probably 5 crabs by that point and I asked how think the letter was. She said it was very thin, one piece of paper tops. .... WHAT. I was pretty disappointed because, well, we all know that thin envelopes from admissions typically don't have good messages in them. I drove home after finishing all my crab and hesitantly opened the letter. I got in! It was a pleasant surprise. Plus, I will add that I like getting stuff in the snail mail. I'm glad it wasn't an email. It felt so real.
  5. I joined meetup.com groups in the area that I am moving to. In my town already, I use it to meet people with similar interests like hiking, running, board games, salsa dancing, or photography. There are so many interest groups out there and it's a great way to meet new people.
  6. When I met the right girl. That was enough to get me motivated.
  7. I am sort of in that situation. My girlfriend and I got into the top programs for our fields, mine in Southern California and hers in Boston. My family told me, and her family told her, that a solid relationship is more important than the career, and having someone that is marriage potential will be a lifelong investment that will provide more happiness and that isn't worth the risk of losing over a career or education. We both got into the top schools for our respective fields, and we both decided to go to our schools and continue our relationship in long distance. I don't think we will sacrifice each other, but we definitely chose schools above our relationship. In my mind, selecting the right school is placing my partner as a top priority because I think of my girlfriend benefiting from the opportunities that I will get from completing school. I think if it really came down to it, black or white as posed in the OP, I would pick a relationship over a career or schooling.
  8. I thought it was interesting that INTJ and INFJ were the highest people on here. I don't think that is representative of the graduate student population, but I think it is very likely that INTJs and INFJs are internet dwellers and would find a place like gradcafe
  9. INFJ! I've known this since 2006!
  10. I accepted my offer to USC in February and just found this delightful website. Trojan life, here we all come!
