You should go to TAMU.... because you'd be occupying one space in UT and I want to get there... kidding UT is better for me, both academically and otherwise, since Austin is a big city relatively to College Station. But maybe the POI you want is in TAMU, or you want to specialize in something they are better at, or you like small towns.

2016 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
GeoMex replied to GeoDUDE!'s topic in Earth Sciences Forum
I meant that why is your confidence in that state? UH is pretty tough, I got accepted to UT last year but not UH, I don't know why. Texas A&M is near, Rice is in Houston but it's private. SMU, UT Dallas, and Baylor are good choices too. -

Why is it like that? What programs are you trying to get in? -

Those are cycles. There was another in 2004, and 1998, and 1993, etc. Since the industry in Mexico is going private they have been laying off a lot of people, and it's estimated they will lay off around 15000 at the begining of this next year. The thing is, be confident that you will enter a program, use it, take all you can from it because when you get out oil prices are thought to start going up again, maybe not to 100, but at least to some level where companies can start hiring again. Maybe you can learn some stuff on the side that can help you get hired while the position you want is available. Like working with softwares like GIS or programming in some language building some geoscience program, if you do great, a company can buy your program or hire you to do more -
I completed mine last week. I could've completed them earlier but my team leader kind of left the LOR for later since there was still time. The PoI at my top choice finally got back at me and said he was reviewing my application, he didn't state if he would recommend me but it would seem he was interested since I'd not cost him much or any money

In which order should I do things?
GeoMex replied to mmzee's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Thank you all. A friend of a friend who's also going to Austin, told her that wells fargo is a good option, which I have already heard before but until now it became relevant. I'll ask about those credit unions, but the thing is that I want the account to give it to the institution funding me. I don't want to use my payroll account. -

Can anyone suggest a good bank for an international student where I can easily cancel the account after my studies? -
Exploration Seismology vs Inverse methods
GeoMex replied to trulytriaxial's topic in Earth Sciences Forum
I agree with Geodude. Seeing you're interested in geomechanics I'm going to assume you want to specialize in geophysics while still using geomechanics. So exploration seismology would probably be a better fit, specially if you want to work in the oil and gas industry. The intro of the courses are basically the same since you focus on stresses and strains, so you might not feel out of place with it. -
When is it 'too late' for US F1-Visa interview?
GeoMex replied to mr_anxious's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
My visa was ready the same day, but since I had to go back to work I couldn't wait the ~6 hours it would have taken. So they mailed it and it takes about a week or two depending on the place. So I think you could even have it issued early august and it wouldn't matter. -
Contacting advisor for coursework and project planning.
GeoMex replied to GeoMex's topic in Earth Sciences Forum
Yeah, I was waiting for a response from my mentor from the company but since he didn't answer and I was already exchanging emails with my advisor for other reasons, I asked him and now I'll wait to see what he responds. -
Hi all! I want to know if any of you have some general ideas about how to approach the coursework and project planning with my advisor. I was recommended by a colleague that just finished his PhD. to do it asap since for some reasons (with my company) I need time to prepare it before starting the semester. Should I ask him directly about what he thinks would be the best course of action for me to take, or should I present my ideas first and then ask what he thinks about them? I don't want him to think with the first option that I don't have any plannification done, but also I don't want to force any of my ideas and limit what his advice as an expert could bring into my project. Any thoughts? Thanks!

First Year Students Fall 2014 How's It Going
GeoMex replied to Threeboysmom's topic in Officially Grads
This seems like the best way to go. Obviously being as nice as possible, you could say something like "Hey XXXXX, I need to work on some things, could you please give me back my chair?" Working with older and same age people at my job has given me the vision that not because someone is older/different gender I need to sit back and don't ask for things. The only times when I might sit back is when a boss is the one in the way. -

Are contracts with these networks hard to finish? Do they do that thing where they will keep charging you after the contract date pass if you don't go personally to end it? -
Hello everyone. I will do my Master's in Geophysics. Anyone know if you can attend the IBC without the student visa? I wanted to go in june so I can clear the bar for registering but I don't know if it's possible. I'm afraid that if I go in August courses I want will be full already.
-
Does anybody know if it is strictly necessary that I have my student visa when I attend the event? I would like to go in June but my student visa might not be ready yet for that date, however I'd still have all the other documents and my tourist visa. If it is I'd need to move the date for my visa appointment. And in that case, does anybody know if when you process your student visa they take away your B1 tourist visa? Thanks

Yup. In our school our math teacher recommended us Leithold's book. I liked it and we used it for all 3 calculus courses. But apparently there's a lot of other better books, so search a bit and you'll find something that you like. But definitely use the online courses and videos. If you only want to get better at specific stuff I recommend short videos like those similar to Khan Academy . Otherwise, I think the MIT and Stanford have uploaded complete courses on youtube.
-
There's a bunch of videos in Youtube about calculus, even complete courses/lectures from great Universities. I don't know what type of calculus is 3 in the USA, but you will surely find something about it. Also there are some places where to buy (and others to "borrow" if you don't have money) books about calculus with excercises.

Buying/leasing a car while studying in the US?

I have to check these things out before I travel with it. I don't want to get in trouble for free -
Buying/leasing a car while studying in the US?
GeoMex replied to Leibowitz's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Because if you as a Mexican pass a non-mexican car to Mexco, unless you have a permit to do so, your car will be taken. -
Buying/leasing a car while studying in the US?
GeoMex replied to Leibowitz's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Well my car is 2015, so I don't think it would have any problems with standards. Do you know how much does it cost approximately to get the license, plates and stickers? The thing is that since I'm not an american citizen I won't be able to drive the car back to Mexico with US plates, and that beats the whole purpose of bringing it to the US (Austin Tx) -

Anyone knows if I can move to the USA with my own car? I live near the border in Mexico, and I have everything in order this side of the border. Do I still need an US drivers license or is it enough with the one I already have? (it is enough when I go shopping or travel in the US for a few days, don't know about living for two full years) also, do I need to get a special permit or new plates? -
