  1. Awkward interviews: so all of my interviews were a little awkward and I stressed a lot about it. But after speaking with a professor at one of the schools I was accepted at, they told me the reason interviewers are not as inquisitive and don’t ask follow up questions is because they are tying to be fair and unbiased. They want to ask every applicant the same questions and not show favoritism during the interview. My advice is to practice your answers and to find ways to elaborate where you can. Don’t stress and just be clear about your work and goals.
  2. Just chiming in with the schools I’ve heard back from: UT Knoxville - nothing University of the Arts - accepted (with no interview) University of Iowa - accepted UW Madison - accepted I only applied to four programs this year (this is my second time around) and I’m so pleased with the results.
  3. Any advice for someone interviewing for Design? I’m genuinely shocked that the design department thought I was a good candidate. I don’t have a lot of technical experience or any idea what I’d do with a design degree but the Rutgers design program looks so interesting…
  4. Just got invited to interview for the MFA Program in Design at Rutgers not at all what I expected since I applied for the MFA in Visual arts.
  5. Man! I'm going crazy. I interviewed at my number one school, but Rutgers is number two and I'm dying to know if I'm in or not. A friend of mine (painter) found out today that they were selected for an interview.
  6. I had my first interview with UT Knoxville yesterday and felt pretty good about it! Still anxious about herring from the other schools though.
  7. Thinking that myself! I have too much to sift through honestly but I'm wondering if I'm including things just to fill space or not. I think it's fine to have less to be honest as long as you feel the work is good. And it's the modern internet age. If they like what they see, they might look at your website to see more. But that's just speculation.
  8. Jumping in from the other forum! This is my first year applying and my list of schools is changing constantly. I think I know what I want and then as I get going with the process everything upends itself and I’m rethinking my choices Anyone have work to share? The best way to see mine is my Instagram @kateflake
  9. Oh how did you like university if the arts? I’m thinking about applying there too.
  10. Just curious where people are applying and in what area of study? I’m torn between printmaking and sculpture as I see printmaking more as a means to an end to developed sculptures or artist books. top 5 schools are currently: 1.) Arizona State University 2.) University of Wisconsin- Madison 3.) University of Tennessee- Knoxville 4.) Rutgers 5.) kind of a toss up between a few schools: VCU/Tyler/Columbia/Carnegie Mellon i really want a program where I feel comfortable, able to go at a slower pace and develop more conceptual work.
  11. Oh! I went to UGA for undergrad n printmaking! It’s an absolutely fantastic art school and top rated for print media. The facilities are great too. I would treat an about me section like an artist bio. mine is something like this: “Kate Flake (b. 1991 - Decatur, Georgia) is based in Waltham, Massachusetts but her heart and home is the hot humid air of the American South where she was born and raised. After spending three years as a teacher in Japan, she decided to return to art and delve deep into studio practice at Brandeis University as a Post Baccalaureate student. In the studio she’s always playing with paper and testing it’s transformative possibilities. She spends countless hours making prints and drawings only to cut them up and reassemble them into something else: books, sculptures or completely new prints. Flake has a BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts from the University of Georgia and intends to pursue a master’s degree in fine art to be able to teach other people how to print lots of things and then cut them up too.” Obviously don’t write in third person though. Cheers!
  12. Did anyone go to Iowa for undgergrad? I'm interested in Iowa because it has both a printmaking and book arts MFA program and I would like to get a degree in both. I'm just curious what the atmosphere/faculty is like. I want something that will let me work pretty experimentally. Anyone have any thoughts?
  13. I'm definitely thinking about them. I'm a little hesitant about the program though because... it's cold there! I'm from the south I like it warm. That's not my biggest worry though I went Southern Graphics Convention there in 2013 and didn't really like the facilites. In general I wasn't too impressed but really what kind of impression can i get of place if there thousands of people running around the campus? So maybe. It's definitely worth a look.
  14. I've been doing a little research about printmaking programs that also have decent book arts programs or a press associated with the school and I've got a couple, but I was wondering if there are some other schools that I'm just missing out on. Any ideas? I really want a school that has a developed printmaking program. UT knoxville Arizona Alabama (a very intense program) Columbia UGA ( went there for undergrad) Oregon College of art and Craft Iowa
