  1. esmusssein, are you comp lit? this reminds me of Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
  2. I got this too! Congrats hedgerows.
  3. I got my letter about a week and a half ago. I'm in but sans funding
  4. this is interesting info. i've never thought of an unofficial waitlist because i haven't seen any rejects in the results feed. either way, i have a decision to make quickly and the "2nd week of april" could be as late as the 13-14th. not cool.
  5. hey dieht, any decisions yet? congrats on your successful round again!

  6. hey! did they get into the phd or MA? i'm not positive where i'm attending yet but i think lehigh as they're the only ones who provided a tuition waiver & funding. i would've liked brandeis but they're kind of in an economic bind so i couldn't have expected too much out of them in retrospect. good luck with your next round!

  7. hey those of you who are still waiting for PSU (myself included). I spoke to the departmental grad secretary and she said decisions will be happening the first or second week of april. very considerate for those of us who need to accept/decline other offers in the near future... (note sarcasm).
  8. i'm not sure what you mean by without financial consideration but i didn't file a FAFSA for need-based aid. i got accepted without any merit aid either about 3 weeks ago though.
  9. i really really want to be a professor! i think that in the public school system teachers have to compromise their love of literature to fit a curriculum-- i simply don't want to fall prey to that. my professors seem to not only know everything about their field, but they have a ubiquitous knowledge about EVERYTHING. i'm eager to learn arcane historical and social details and facts in addition to working intensely with literature
  10. if anyone is interested, i spoke with Alan Singer today via email and he told me they're not giving me funding-- so i guess it is a possibility to be unfunded. and he'll disclose the info now i suppose.
  11. I live in Brooklyn- but on the south side (more residential). You'd probably looking to live in north Brooklyn- closer to the city. Rents can be high but living around prospect heights/park slope/downtown brooklyn can be a 15-20 minute train ride into the city. The neighborhoods are all up and coming or already trendy and have a lot of culture going on (restaurants, fairs, museums etc etc). There's also access to the LIRR (long island railroad) close by. Idk where exactly the CUNY grad center is but it doesn't seem to be much of a commute from Brooklyn. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions. Jenna
  12. i got a 4.0 the first time and a 4.5 the second. thanks ETS. haha.
  13. this experience has been an out of body one. i have experienced the lowest lows -- DESPAIR at the thought of not getting in or when rejections arrived in my inbox/mailbox. yet you feel the greatest euphoria when you get in... it's like "they like me, they really like me!"
  14. it may be better to ask someone who knows you better. some grad school apps are due as early as mid-december and you'll need to notify your LOR writers early so you may face the problem of not having that much class time with the prof. you're going to be competing against people with *stellar* recs (recommendation inflation maybe?) and you need people that can really vouch for your work ethic, research capabilities and writing.
  15. I see some NYU rejection activity on the results. Was this a mass e-mail to everyone? I totally didn't get it. I can think of only one thing-- deferral to the cash cow MA. woohoo!
  16. catholic told you no funding? that's horrible. i've also gotten a few unfunded/partially funded offers and they're not of much use unless you're donald trump ;) i don't know what goes on with penn state either-- i'm not even tempted to call because i think it's a rejection undoubtedly. where else will you be applying?

  17. hey medieval, any news on penn state? are you headed to CUA pending when penn state gets their act together? haha.

  18. the letter said 7 spots out of 120 applications so good luck! i hope you get off the waitlist but wistfully kinda wish it was me!
  19. i think stony brook has called all acceptances/wait-lists. i got my rejection in the mail today (i live about an hour and 15 minutes away). good luck!
  20. i don't think the BA is a bad idea-- you can transfer your liberal arts/requirement credits and it may only take you a year and a half/two to finish an undergrad english major (my school is something around 48 major credits) if you're going full time. then you can apply to direct track phd programs and it may end up taking a similar time as a separate MA/PhD being that some PhD programs don't accept transferred MA credits anyway.
  21. I received the ambiguous, brief acceptance to Temple's PhD today! I see from last year the funding comes later. Does anyone from this round have any funding info yet? I'll call tomorrow but you know that here we're all rather eager to find out anything asap. Thanks!
  22. More sage advice. Yes this particular program seems very strong in my field. I mentioned the whole jeopardizing your relationship thing to one of my younger profs whose gone through this more recently and she said it shouldn't be a problem. Because the programs are delineated as "terminal MA" and phd even though I can continue, the protocol might be different/easier than I thought.
  23. sounds like some sound advice strokeofmidnight. in my case, i will probably take the funded MA/PhD offer I have on the table and then once I complete my MA (the school delineates btwn the MA and PhD-- you continue onto the PhD after the MA contingent upon success), i will apply internally to continue (informal, most go on) and probably to a few higher ranked schools to try my luck. the program i'm planning on attending (thus far) has a lot of people in my field though and seems like a great fit so we shall see. good luck to you stroke, i hope this is the week as your status begs!
  24. haha thankfully my other offer is phd track & funded! but i'm still waiting on so many:( hopefully a funded MA comes your way!
