  1. i'm reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera and Mastering Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels
  2. Brown just sent out what I think to be a mass e-mail that they are reviewing applications and will be notifying as soon as a decision is rendered. more waiting...
  3. i'm not in your field but i have a professor at my school which is a decently respected mid-size university, who has his BA from oxford and phd from harvard. he's not even in my department, doesn't know much about me despite my high 3.94 gpa and my gre scores which were over 1350 and told me that often students from our school don't have the mojo to compete with students at top tier schools in graduate programs who went to top bachelors programs and therefore are used to competing amongst the top competitors. umm, okay?
  4. it seemed that everyone got an award! i don't even think my school gives awards. now i kinda wanna make one up and award it to myself to feel accomplished vs. this article haha.
  5. i don't know if this has been posted here before, but it is certainly interesting (and humorous) at times. if you're obsessed like me, you will probably read all 32,000 words in a single sitting regardless of whether it is 1am (the time it is now that i have finished reading it) http://www.pitt.edu/~mikewest/advice.html
  6. haha yeah carla kaplan... but she's like the only one
  7. Does anyone know much about the Northeastern program? I was planning on applying but it is the last school I was doing research on since the application is due 2/1. I had been looking around before and even mentioned the name to professors and there were no red flags. However, I now see they only have specifically 1 person working on the later American novel. She fits my other interests pretty well too but one person=slim chance I fear...
  8. -1350+ GRE scores, including a weirdly high quant. score... -3.93 overall gpa, 3.96 major gpa so... summa cum laude graduate! yay -presentation at an undergrad research conference last year/hopefully another trip this year to present my completed paper -senior honors thesis with the department hard-ass who seems quite unconcerned with me receiving anything but high honors -4 LOR's-- 1 from the director of the MA @ my school (i'm an undergrad), 1 from a full-tenured yale grad, 1 from my thesis advisor/former chair of the dept/former dean of honors college, 1 from an assistant prof who is like my mother in the english department! -experience as a "peer teacher" for a freshman cluster (we don't have TA's), Kaplan SAT teacher, and university tutor (mostly in spanish) unfortunately i could make a similarly large list of my perceived weaknesses. eek. 12/13 apps in. praying for uno.
  9. Hi guys, I'm new to this forum-- also an English Lit PhD applicant for fall 2010. Does anyone know about Temple admissions? I checked the rankings-- it's in the lower numbers but I know that often means nothing in terms of competitiveness/acceptance rates. I'd appreciate any info! Thanks & good luck! Jenna
