  1. Oh snap. A program that I actually applied to!
  2. No, unfortunately. It was one of the programs I got rid of when I decided that I really wanted to get out of California. I only applied to USC and UCI.
  3. Oh my god I must have spent at least 20+ hours researching fit alone. I seriously started looking last spring in May and kept researching over the summer. The problem (?) with being an early modernist is that every school has some kind of representation of the early modern. I ended up with a list of 27 schools that would be a great fit for what I want to do. I then narrowed it down to how well-funded each early modern program seemed to be: I looked for colloquia, special collections, library and consortium affiliations (most of the programs I applied to ended up being in the BLC), visiting faculty and special presentations, and current faculty research projects. I ended up with a list of 20 that, with the help of one of my recommenders (we talked about job placement and opportunities in relation to different schools), was eventually reduced down to 15. The only one I'm a bit skeptical about is Washington State in the Tri Cities area. Looking back on the school's website, I'm puzzled how that program made the cut. I'm not even particularly keen on Washington. I guess we'll see what happens with that one! Advice for future cohorts: start the "fit" research early! I must have half a dozen spreadsheets dealing with schools and the "fit" question.
  4. And a shame, considering how amazing CSULB's English department alone is.
  5. On another note, congrats to the new admits! I'm refusing to check my email, actually. That's my best coping strategy right now.
  6. I'm just speaking from my experience about when I was admitted. Maybe the numbers I was shown was specifically for the liberal arts college? Idk. But if the percentages of admits are that high, it would surely explain a lot about what goes down here lol. But yes, every department for grad level admits differently. I guess that's what I was getting at when I gave the advice to reach out to professors rather than the administration. Eta: I was a transfer, so maybe in this case transfer admits are lower? Not sure how it works.
  7. I haven't anything of substance to add other than I thought this thread was going to be about the movie, and I was looking forward to the insightful conversation from our cohort. I guess this is great too...
  8. Having completed my undergrad and MA at CSULB, I know the programs can be very competitive. This varies depending on the program, of course, but just to give you an idea, undergrad and transfer applicant are accepted at a less than 10% rate. The service are of the school is massive, so they get a lot of applications. Your best bet is to stay on top of everything yourself and email faculty often. The administration is pretty impersonal, at least they have been in my experience, because of the large student body population. However, the professors have been nothing but encouraging and helpful. I have found that the professors often give information that the website/administration will not tell you. Hope that helps a bit!
  9. Good to know. I hadn't given much thought to waitlists prior to right now.
  10. Twiddling the heck out of my thumbs...

  11. Yes, but we can at least be happy and proud for her. And really, her acceptances only effect those on the waitlist, which, now that I think about it, I haven't heard anyone on here being waitlisted. I wonder if those notifications usually come later?
  12. Thanks for the thought though Congrats!! I'm excited for you!
  13. Congrats to her! One of my letter writers did her PhD at USC in early modern studies. I'm curious to see if that will have any effect on my application at all. I'm anxious to hear back either way!!
  14. Was this you, 1Q84? I haven't heard back yet. ETA: whoever got the acceptance heard from Bruce Smith, a HUGE name in Shakespeare. I am immensely jealous, but congrats to whoever it was!!
  15. Same. I'm getting jealous of all the admits (one person in my program got accepted to UW Madison today) but I keep having to remind myself that I really do not want to live in Wisconsin. My first roommate was from there and everything she said just made it clear that it wasn't for me. Its tough, but I'm trying to stay positive! But I am truly happy for everyone who has been accepted. I can't imagine the peace of mind those who have been accepted must be experiencing!
  16. Kissing Booth
  17. Well now that the semester has started, I have been occupied with starting research and reading assignments to get ahead in the semester so I won't seem so overwhelmed once I start preparing for comps.
  18. Chocolate and wine. I crave this every day. Naps. I take 'em when I can get 'em. Baked sushi rolls with cream cheese inside. Reality TV, especially House Hunters International and all of the Real Housewives shows. I live for these! ETA: Cops. My boyfriend and I decided to record a bunch of episodes and we watch them whenever we have time together that lends itself to TV time. We still have a good day or so of Cops time recorded, and we've watched about half.
  19. Congrats to the new admits!!
  20. Not at all a GIF, but entirely appropriate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-crgQGdpZR0
  21. This is too good lol
  22. Ugh, I'm sorry that someone else can relate to what I'm going through! It sounds like your situation is worse than mine, since you absolutely do not have a choice but to leave. Moving with pets is difficult, especially dogs for some reason. Good luck to you though! Fingers crossed that you won't even have to leave! Ugh, renting is the absolute worst. I had roaches in one of my apartments (it comes with the territory the deeper into north-west LB you go) and it got to the point where I couldn't even use my kitchen. The landlords wouldn't do anything either. I will never forget that smell... But thank you for the well wishes!!
