  1. I'm only applying to ND (PhD Moral), since my husband goes there already. UGPA: 4.0 (Engineering) GGPA: 3.9 (Theology) GRE: 610V/670Q/4.5
  2. Where can you check the status of your application materials on the ND app website? I e-mailed them and they had received everything, but other than that, I can't seem to find an option (like other schools) where you can login and see the status of the materials. *Edited: Nevermind--I found it in the main page. I was getting confused by the other school I'm applying to that uses the same format but doesn't show the status of the materials.
  3. I totally agree with this. Don't worry about it. They've gone through this process as well, so they should know how stressful it is. Send a follow-up e-mail as suggested above and you should be good to go! Good luck
  4. I agree. If there is no funding, there is no reason to attend grad school, in my opinion.
  5. Congratulations! I know the feeling about making plans already after getting your first acceptance after my husband got admitted in his PhD program last year! Is the CUNY acceptance yours?
  6. To the OP: I agree with the PP that you shouldn't worry too much about what that professor said, especially if it is based on GRE scores alone. My husband had professors either telling him he was going to get everywhere (which was not helpful) and others telling him he wasn't going to get anywhere (which wasn't helpful either). At the end of the day, he applied to 22 schools for a PhD in philosophy and got accepted to half of them and waitlisted in a handful more. Most of the schools were in the top 30. He got into a top 15 school, which is the one he is attending now. One thing I learned from my husband's admission process last year is that there is no clear formula for getting in, especially in disciplines as competitive as philosophy for PhD applicants. He got waitlisted in a top 5 school, but then rejected at schools that were not even ranked. It is very hard to say. Just try to remain confident about yourself and do not doubt yourself over GRE scores. I think that is such a pointless test anyway! I'm an engineer and I struggled with the quantitative section. Spanish is my native language and I made a 610 in Verbal, which is in the 88th percentile. I mean, there is no clear formula for this. Don't stress about it and just try to distract yourself with something else, so you won't go crazy with the wait like some of us
  7. Nice to know I'm not the only one There seems to be a lot of psych majors in sociology... interesting! Oh, forgot to say that I also took one sociology class in undergrad. Good luck to you!
  8. I have an engineering background and was curious if there were any more people with non-sociology backgrounds applying this time around? Hope everyone is hanging in there with the wait
  9. I lived in the South for 10 years and I don't miss the humid summers in Houston and Louisiana. I live in the midwest now and yeah the winter seems to be brutal, but I'll take these summers any day over the summers in the South.
  10. Really cool! Congratulations! Atlanta is a cool town.
  11. I think speculation about GRE scores and GPA is everything but helpful. There seems to be no magic formula for being admitted since we all have different strengths and weaknesses in our applications. I, for one, have an engineering background, so my application is going to be weighed differently against those other candidates who have a background in sociology and so forth. Applications are looked as a whole not just particular numbers (or at least that is how I do it at work when we are hiring and looking at resumes). My guess is that if you have low GREs or even a low GPA but you have a stellar record in publishing articles and/or a lot of awards/scholarships, then your application is given a different consideration.
  12. I'm not in the 90th percentile in any of my GRE scores. I'm just hoping my 4.0 and 3.9 GPA in undergrad and grad school do the job. If they don't, oh well. I *highly* doubt that they cut off people based on GRE scores at least based on what I saw on my husband's grad school admission cycles last year. All schools are very different from each other.
  13. Two of my applications had early deadlines, which was a pain, because I work full-time and had to work hard to get those ready. My other one (Notre Dame), I have not submitted yet, but should do so this week now that I'm on vacation. How's everybody else doing?
  14. I see the writing sample as another chance you give them to admit you over other candidates who do not submit any. In other words, through a writing sample, you are showing them your additional skills and giving them more ways to get yo know you. I don't have a sociology background, so I submitted an article I co-authored that was published in a peer-review journal. Not sociology-related, but hopefully they find it interesting at least
  15. Hi Hawk--Thank you for your kind words. Actually, yes, I'm restricted geographically, because my husband is a philosophy grad student enrolled in a very good Ph.D. program. I really would've loved to have applied to more schools... oh well
  16. Hi everyone, I'm also applying this year. I'm already done with my applications. I'm not applying to a lot of schools, since my husband is also a grad student and we are limited to the number schools in our area. My background is in engineering (undergrad) and theology (masters). My research interests are immigration, social/racial stratification, political/economic sociology and labor. I also have a secondary interest in sociology of religion. I'm only applying to three schools. One of those is Notre Dame. Good luck to all of you!
  17. Oh and it seems that no one here is applying to the same schools I'm applying to.
  18. Hi everyone, I don't have a sociological background. My background is in engineering (undergrad) and theology (masters). I know... odd combination. B.S. GPA: 4.0 M.A. GPA: 3.9 GRE: 610V/670Q/4.5AW (I'm an engineer and I thought that the Q section was absolutely ridiculous; verbal was much easier than I expected although still hard, because English is not my first language)... FWIW I think the GRE should be made illegal, because it is the worst test ever Undergrad institution: Public Grad Institution: Private I'm not an international student. Research Interests: immigration, racial stratification, political and economic sociology, labor Applied to two top 10 programs and Notre Dame. My best wishes to all of you and may this be a good admission cycle to all of us
