Do admission committes search for us on the web?
coffeeandtoast replied to coffeeandtoast's topic in Sociology Forum
Hahahahaha... Elle Woods. That is pretty funny! By the way, I can't believe she got into Law School, so improbable! -
Romaniac, Thank you so much for your willingness to share some of the details. My congratulations to you! Risapiecees, I have also applied to UNC. I haven't heard anything. My application status also says submitted and has not changed. My husband applied to UNC last year (different department) and he said he heard that those who were rejected were able to see that in their application. He was waitlisted, but I think he found out through an e-mail from one of the professors after the acceptances and rejections were sent out. Again, this may not be as relevant as different departments work differently. I was also a bit worried about the number of UNC acceptances posted last year, but if you see the on the UNC graduate school website, it shows that they made 20+ offers in the sociology department but only 11 of those accepted. So I guess there still may be hope. I don't see many people applying to UNC (at least here), which I found surprising, so hopefully only 20 of us applied and we can all get accepted Their number of acceptances may even be lower this year though if they are affected by the economic downturn. All of this is speculation, of course! The fact that last year's results show some acceptances being done via phone or e-mail confirms what Romaniac said above--that he was called by one of the professors he had in his Statement of Intent. My husband had that happen to him with Northwestern--they made phone calls to some candidates first at the beginning of the week and followed up with e-mails. He thought he was out for sure. Well, later on that week he received an e-mail with an acceptance and the same funding package as everyone else (as he later found out). Then, the phone call followed a few days later. Maybe it works that way with UNC--they take their time with their applicants for recruiting purposes. Let's hope for good news for both of us!

Congratulations to everybody who got accepted and those who haven't heard yet, there may still be more notifications to come out!

That sounds like a good sign to me That means you at least made some kind of cut off! I know they didn't ask for one. I still mailed mine to them with my transcripts, but who knows if they got them!

Hehe. This was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. I honestly don't think it matters much in grad school--maybe it will get you a diversity fellowship if your other stats are good enough, but I'm not counting on this to get me in at all.

I'm Hispanic.

Yeah, my native language is Spanish. I had a hard time justifying English as my "foreign language", since, like you say, it is the "native" language of the PhD program. I added Spanish, English, and Italian to my foreign languages while keeping Spanish as my native language in the first part of the application. Kind of tricky.

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application

All of you have great ones I'm sure they'll laugh at mine too. "A chemical engineer with a masters in theology... boy she is confused!" -
Another UNC acceptance... congrats!

Great, thanks! -
Yes, congratulations to everybody! This wait is making me really nervous though. I hope I get accepted or rejected soon. I can't make it until April 15th like this. I need my life back.

My husband was told by the DGS of his current PhD program that they googled his name and the name of all other applicants that made the short list before making an offer. How often do you think this happens? There is nothing scandalous if you google my name (which is quite uncommon), but I don't know why, it still doesn't make me feel really comfortable!

I think that one is mainly for sharing which schools you applied to and what your interests are rather than sharing actual admission results.

Yes. ChemE here.
-
I have an undergrad GPA of 4.0 in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in theology with an GPA of 3.9 (see negatives thread as I'm applying to sociology programs!!) I have a publication in an engineering peer-reviewed journal (probably doesn't matter AT ALL for sociology programs) I think I may have very good LORs This was hard. I can only focus on the bad things of my application.

I'm applying to sociology PhD programs and I only took one sociology class in undergrad. I'm a chemical engineer with a masters in Theology. I'm a mixed bag!!!

Awwww!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm so happy for you!!! See, you didn't have anything to worry about It won't sink in for days! It took my husband a while to process all of his acceptances Go have a drink or something!

Congratulations! Now there are four acceptances! I hope all of you have good news on funding soon.

I got an e-mail too last week that said "Application Status Update". My heart stopped. Yeah, it was just confirming they had all my materials.

Ridiculously stupid application status-checking routines

Guys can you please add your acceptances to the Results page? That's what I check like twice every hour.
