I say apply. I was in a similar situation where I wasn't sure if I was going to attend UNLESS I had funding from the uni. They send an email with details to apply and so I did. Ultimately I didn't attend this uni but knowing that this app was sent in for consideration can't hurt. Plus if you decide not to attend, then that uni can give it to another student - or whatever. 
But, yes-Apply. It's money

Hey All! 
Since the fall semester for some of us is going to be starting up soon and I thought we could start this forum for the next round of applicants looking for help, advice, exchange ideas, and so forth. 
For my interests, primarily I study Andean Bioarchaeology and complement it with Forensic Anthropology - and will be applying to Vanderbilt, Brown, Harvard so far. I'm sure I will add more schools as the semester goes. 

I worked in CRM for many years before going back for my PhD. Don't give up!! Feel free to message me if you want to chat.

Accepted into Binghamton!! Just got an email from POI, its my first acceptance! I was scared I wouldn't get in anywhere 

So apparently my phone interview with UVA went fairly well and I ended up getting an invite to spend a weekend on campus with other finalists in late February.  It's three days and I'll be meeting with the faculty I mentioned in my SoP, touring campus, dinner with the DGS, etc. I think there's 12-15 applicants going and the professor I spoke with said they're taking 5-6 people this year.  Anyone have advice for attending this type of event?  

@AnthropologyNRT Congrats!  You are absolutely killing it this cycle!  How did your Irvine interview go?
@Bschaefer @Caymay Thanks for letting me know - I had a feeling it was good news but good to know for sure.  Wisconsin is one of my top choices so I'm super stoked!

Anyone want to claim the Rice interview(s)?  I didn't get anything from them today so that's probably curtains for me.
In other news, I randomly checked my Wisconsin portal this afternoon and the status has now changed to "Your program has recommended you for admission.  The Graduate School will be reviewing your file."  I guess that's an acceptance, even though I haven't heard from the department or my POI yet...

I got into Syracuse!!!  I got the email 45 minutes before my UVA interview - talk about a rollercoaster of emotions!  I went from anxiety over the interview to freaking out over the acceptance and back to anxiety in about 5 minutes 

I haven't heard back yet, but I got interviewed a month or so ago with my poi's. I did contact one of them unrelated to the app and they said that they still had a few applications to look over, and that was about a week or so ago.

Got an interview invite from the University of Virginia this afternoon - wasn't expecting to hear back from them so early.  Hard to say if I'm more nervous or excited at the moment!

I just got a call from the University of Cincinnati. They said the read my app, really liked it, and want to fly me out there for the interview weekend in late February (starting Feb. 23)!! I'm so pumped!

You can apply with an MA but there has to have been a 2 year gap and you can't have finished more than 12 months of graduate coursework during that gap.

Personally I didn't list ANYTHING on my CV that wasn't anthropology/archaeology/bioarchaeology/museum related. Anything that doesn't have to do with anthropology was completely left off. Obviously this just depends on the person reading your CV, but I would prefer to not list non-academic items on my CV. Maybe ask them if you can send both a CV and a resume since they're different things and tell completely different stories? That might help a little bit.

Also, somebody mentioned the GRFP. Everyone--everyone--needs to apply for this. Apply your first year and if it's not accepted, try again your second year. It's a big chunk of no-strings-attached money and you can combine it with your university stipend assuming you're offered one.
A lot of undergrad advisers neglect to mention the GRFP to their students who are applying to grad school, and some PhD advisers I guess just assume their starting students already know about it. It's a complete dereliction of duty on both counts. Everyone should be applying for this fellowship.
Seriously. Apply.

@striped I have to echo @GreenEyedTrombonist. After everything is said and done with grants, TAships, RAships, my current uni is actually paying me for my masters. 

I don't post much, but I check this page almost daily-- it's an anxious time-- and I just wanted to say that the community here is great.  Everyone is so supportive of one another, and the positive energy is awesome.  Thanks to all of you for just being wonderful   

I know the application cycle is over and all, but you contact Silvana Rosenfeld at the University of South Dakota. She is an archaeologist of the Andes who specializes in food archaeology. She might be helpful in your research as you advance in your PhD. 

Sometimes I wish I had never found out about the results page...then I think to myself, "it's been 5 minutes, better check to see if anything new was posted."

You might want to have a look at the Queen's U geography department (in Canada) - I have a friend doing lion-human relations there. Also, I came across an anthro prof at the New School (in New York) who does work on human-animal relations. I forget his name. If you're switching subdisciplines you usually want to show that it's a logical progression. For Canadian schools, they usually look for an MA degree (because less coursework than in the US) unless you have an incredible undergraduate record in the discipline. Good luck!
