  1. If this is something you really want you shouldn't give up. I know it's extremely upsetting not getting in. It's my second time applying and I know some people who it's their third and fourth time applying, and they got in this time!! Just really try to build your resume and apply EVERYWHERE. If this is what you want and you can financially do it, you will move anywhere to get into a program. I am from the east coast and will be moving to the Midwest in August. I am so excited to start a new journey somewhere I have never been. My mother is also a RN and I see how mentally and physically draining it is. I know the pay is really well, but the pay can be really well as an SLP too. I would say don't give up if being an SLP is what you really want!! Good luck!
  2. Does anyone know of any books to review the summer before grad school that might be helpful going into grad school? I'm thinking of going through all of my notes, but if there is a book that has everything combined that might be more helpful!!
  3. Hey everyone! I graduated with a 3.57 overall, a 3.27 in my major GPA (communication disorders), and a 3.88 in my minor (psych of developmental disabilities). I had okay GRE score, just barely made it to the 300 mark. I applied to 8 schools all along the east coast last year and got rejected from every one of them, (I had lower GRE scores last year). This year I expanded where I applied and applied from the east coast across the Midwest and towards the west coast. I got wait listed at about 7, accepted to 1, and got off the wait list at 2 (I haven't updated my signature). I certainly wouldn't say applying to the Midwest is easier because I know schools that get just as many applications. For me, I applied to Northeastern last year and they received over 750 applications which is crazy. From my experience of coming from such a low GPA (low in our field) I think all of the background experience I did to build my resume really helped, working hard on SOP and getting great recommendations are also so important. I know not everyone has the opportunity to just get up and move for school, but I will be moving halfway across the country and am so excited to start fresh, and at such a great program! So take it from me, you can get in with a lower GPA, but you need to make the rest of your package great!! Good luck!!
  4. congrats @timberlake!!! so happy for you! it really is the best feeling ever knowing you will be going somewhere in the fall! btw have you heard back from University of Mississippi yet? Still haven't heard anything and it's almost May....
  5. has anyone applied to the University of Mississippi? Nobody has posted anything on the portal except for wondering when they will notify us regarding our application. To be honest I feel like people should get their money back if they haven't heard one thing from a school by this late....at least have the decency to notify if you are on the wait list. The deadline to apply was almost three months ago.....
  6. I am a second year applicant and was accepted this time around. I was reading this thread and wanted to give input because I know how disappointing and frustrating it can be not getting into a program, and I hope what I say can help! If this is really what you want, you will not give up and will keep after your dream, you can do it!! After getting 8 rejections last year, I emailed many of the schools I applied to to get an idea of why I got rejected/what they were looking for in an applicant. Many told meh GRE scores didn't meet their requirements, so I knew that was something I needed to work on. I used the Magoosh online GRE program and raised my score almost 10 points. I volunteered at the Northeast Arc where I worked with adults with disabilities once a week for 1 hour a week-even if you can only volunteer once a week it looks very good to be doing). It is also hard to find an SLPA job in Mass, so I worked as a para at a high school with a boy on the Autism spectrum, I worked as an ABA therapist, took sign language, and put a ton of effort into my SOP (I think being a para and doing ABA helped me a lot). What helped me the most I think was really researching schools. Email schools this summer and ask what their standards are, what exactly is their criteria for accepting students, do they mainly accept their own students, how many students apply? Some schools ONLY ACCEPT their own undergrads and do not post that on the website, you need to email them and ask (which is very inconsiderate and unfair). I hope this information helps!!

  8. @dannilou I went to worcester state for undergrad. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
  9. I e-mailed a school today asking when I would be hearing back since they told us we would hear about the decision at the end of February. I got an e-mail back to call the school and talk to this specific professor. I'm kind of nervous. Would they have me call to hear of a rejection? Anyone have this happen to them before?
  10. This is my second year applying as well and as of right now I have been accepted to 1 school, wait listed at 7, and am waiting to hear back from 3. My major GPA was a 3.3 and overall GPA a 3.6. Last year I emailed the schools I got rejected from and they told me to retake the GREs. Since applying last year, I have done countless things to help my resume and increase my chances of getting into school. I spent 4 months on my personal statement, had a complete list of schools of where I was going to apply to by September with a spreadsheet of the deadlines and what was required, and did a lot of volunteering. I'm not sure where you applied, but put a lot of effort into researching the schools where you apply. For me, I looked at schools that didn't require GREs and schools that had "lower stats". It's honestly so hard to know how you're even chosen. I still wonder how I got chose over others, but I would say look at schools that don't require the GREs if yours aren't that great. You can also email schools to find out how many applications they get, how many they accept, and what the typical stats are. I hope some of this helps!
  11. anyone else getting annoyed with how long schools are taking? It's one thing if there are a lot of applications, but one of my schools said they would notify the end of February. It's now basically the beginning of April and I haven't heard anything....
