  1. I feel like not a lot of people do that. I was very fortunate to speak to 7/8 of my POIs. Some of them even called me up and we chatted for a bit. I think building good relationships with them is the most important thing plus it also helps to know a professor that knows your POIs pretty well
  2. Me too but it would be so nice to get in ! My friend went there over the weekend for a hackathon he loves the campus ! And this is getting really bad to point that I'm checking my email every 5 seconds lol
  3. Maybe UT will send out acceptances this week? Three of us applied from my school and didn't hear anything so I highly doubt all three of us got rejected.
  4. Just 60 ? In any case not everyone is going to go to UT Austin so they'll probably have a lot more spots open up in time. Has anybody been rejected yet or do they just keep those until April/May ? Also the majority of people accepted have been PhD applicants so I don't know if UT has some kind of order in regards to PhD and master students
  5. This was the case with me at VT. He told me that I should apply and that he's applying for a grant that can support me. One month later, 'sorry didn't get the grant you'll have to compete for 4 TA positions against 100 applicants".
  6. boy come
  7. Did anyone here apply in previous years and manage to find out why you were rejected from a school ? Was it funding ? Grades ? GRE ? LOR ? etc I'm getting really antsy seeing a lot of people getting replies from schools I applied to and me not hearing anything.
  8. Well might just be my case but 7/8 of my POIs replied to my emails and I even had phone conversations with some of them. Again I guess it depends on the applicant and the POI
  9. Do schools send out decisions over the weekend ? Might be a dumb question but I'll ask anyway
  10. 8 schools and not one decision
  11. Don't lose hope could just mean that they didn't review your app yet. When I called up she said that they didn't look at my application yet
  12. It's always better to email since you don't know their schedule. The only times I called was when we scheduled a phone conversation together
  13. Someone was rejected from Stanford. I'm guessing that school has no order to which it sends out rejections or acceptances
  14. Ah you're lucky my POI didn't get the grant he applied for so I'll have to compete with the others for TA spots
  15. Yea same I last spoke to my POI 2 weeks ago and he said my application wasn't reviewed yet. There're only 4 TA spots open and over 100 applicants, it's going to be bloody
  16. James, did you hear from VT yet ?
  17. I'm guessing that there's multiple student visit weeks at UT ? If so then it's clear that they have a priority system when evaluating candidates. So those who choose not to attend will leave a spot open then they'll call on their next pick and so forth. Also, did any of you who were accepted actually get a response from your POI in your initial email? UT is the only school I applied to where my POI didn't make contact with me. That makes me a little nervous
  18. Did you only apply to those two schools?
  19. Yea that's what my advisor said, oh FWIW, if anybody applied to Penn State they just started looking at the applications. 200 total with 20 spots open. My advisor is the head of the admissions committee so he lets me in on all the good stuff haha well not really. If anybody has any questions at all about the Geoscience program I'll be happy to answer them or questions about PSU/State College in general.
  20. Did anyone hear from the following, UT Austin, Rice, Stanford, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, or Virginia Tech ? I know a couple heard from UT and Stanford but did anyone else ?
  21. I disagree with your point of view on how the GRE is a strong indication of ones performance in grad school. Although I'm not in grad school yet, looking back at similar tests such as the ACT/SAT, if you go by me as an example, the tests did not predict how I will do in college at all. 21 on the ACT and I think a 1200/2400 on the SAT. So what do those numbers mean? That I'd get a GPA around a 2.0? Bottom line I don't think that standardize test scores should be used or at least they shouldn't be weighed as much.
  22. 70% ? Try the lower 20th percentile. I agree 100% as I said multiple times, did horrible on the SAT/ACT and currently have a 3.8 GPA with two majors. I'm losing my patients now that people are hearing back and I still didn't from any of my 8 schools.
  23. I have a 3.8 GPA so no worries there but my GRE is atrocious (290). Never was a standardized test taker i did horrible on my SAT and ACT but I don't believe that they reflect my abilities
