I should be hearing from UMass this week I'm so nervous!

Oh I hate that, that's what happened to me at Texas A&M. Former student of my thesis advisor wanted me to apply and to also contact other faculty members since she couldn't take on new students. Contacted someone else, no response, found out a couple of days ago he can't take on new students either.

I understand this but considering the money I had to pay for the UT application I would think that they could find a time to at least get back to me. Especially at the beginning of this process because I don't even know if he has funding or not

I contacted my POI multiple times at UT Austin with no reply. Maybe they're very busy

Have you tried to contact your POI at Rice ?

Thanks for your input. I believe one of my POIs previous students had to pay for a semester but she's now fully funded so there's a lot to consider here. I'm going to talk to my advisor about support but at least at this point I can have some type of closer knowing I was admitted to one place at least. I'm hopeful though that they will give me some sort of funding

I just got off the phone with my POI at Nebraska, he said that there's a place for me there (he admitted me) but he's unsure about funding. Is it worth going without funding ?

Advisor asked me today if I had any plan Bs :/. He's going to try to hook me up with an environmental consulting company

Called VT today to see what they meant by a decision has not been made on my application. Basically because my POI has no funding and all TA positions have been awarded, they want to see if new funding becomes available. She didn't say it means I've been waitlisted. Expecting a rejection from here too. Does anybody know when Nebraska notifies its candidates? Or UMass ?

I actually spoke to my POI from Rice on the phone. He's very interested in doing work with me but that might change because of the you know what. Really UT contacted you ? Did the department contact you or did your POI ? And yes I believe 30 - 50% of people decline acceptances to UT Austin

Penn State is a big oil recruiter school and so is U Mass (actually I'm unsure about U Mass.....). Obviously though they are quite far from Texas so they are exceptions probably.

Did you hear from Rice ? Or email your POI ?

In relation to industry, how many connections does U of Nebraska have ? My advisor said its one of the top schools to go to for oil

I don't believe so as I said my application was looked at by multiple professors in my department. In all honesty, and I know how this sounds, the GRE is not worth another 200$ to retake (this is for me personally and doesn't apply to everyone). So far none of my schools I got bad news from mentioned the GRE so perhaps there is something else. It could also be that since it's Stanford they usually only take PhD students (he even said that he, and the other evaluators were very impressed with my application but I don't know if they were just saying that). The situation at Texas A&M was mostly a funding issue since both of my POIs couldn't take on new students. My advisor at Wisconsin did mention that it was my GRE scores however. I have 5 more schools left so it isn't official yet but if rejected everywhere, I would like a year or two to evaluate myself and see what the best course of action will be for me. As for prospecting, I'm glad that you have the dignity to lol at my comment as you sit in your big ivory tower over there at Rice (I'm assuming that you go to Rice since you have the Texas flag and your older comment "I hope to God you don't get into Rice" makes me think so). If you do go to Rice and you're the typical grad student there then I do hope I don't get into Rice too. That's enough of this though, I have a thesis to write and midterms to study for. He said I wasn't the right "fit" for the program. I'm interpreting that as your GRE scores sucked so much that we didn't even bother looking at the rest of your application.........sorry I had to.

Is it true that Stanford just accepts or primarily accept PhD candidates ? I was told this by my advisor and I wouldn't be surprised since the first faculty member I spoke to only takes PhD students

I emailed my POIs at Stanford and Texas A&M. They both got back to me so basically my POI at Stanford doesn't think he'll give me a spot and my POI at A&M has no funding and their department already sent out offers to top applicants. She said that she will try to contact someone else in the department that I tried contacting but I didn't hear from her yet. Also she told me that A&M doesn't send out rejections until all spots are filled so basically everyone gets waitlisted until all TA spots and all fellowships are sucked up. This is not looking like a good season so far :/. I'm guessing I also got waitlisted at VT since my advisor there has no funding and the same with my POI at UMass. UT sent out acceptances to top candidates already so I'm not expecting anything there either. If you want to find out what your situation is maybe you guys should email your POIs ? I didn't get the news I wanted but I got something at least.
