In which this user reveals the similarities between magicians and adcomms: University of Maryland, Civil and Environmental Engineering, PhD: "had been in contact with a faculty, she verbally assigned me for RA position, but tadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, REJECTED!!!" I can only picture an admit letter/email disappearing like a magician's assistant. My heart breaks for this person as well. This one made me giggle: Georgetown, Foreign Science: "Email notification to check the website. I also got an email saying that I should reapply next year after retaking the GRE and getting more international experience... But I got into other programs so BYE FELICIA."

I can't imagine he would try anything after willingly turning himself in and knowing that there are multiple people who are aware of who he is and what happened. Regardless, sending positive thoughts and prayers that way. Good luck!!

The fact that the only "significant" topic I see on social media is that Zayn left One Direction...

Should have realized this sooner since it was basically the same in undergrad, but yeah this is definitely true. That, and realizing how important references are. I feel like above all, my references could have made or broke the application decision for me. The fact that there were a lot of professors/faculty members that my references knew helped a ton.

Has anyone here proven the null hypothesis in their thesis?
scarvesandcardigans replied to Grashupfer's topic in Research
True. This is pretty much what my professor told me when I completed my own research. I think it even opens the doors for more research questions for you to research in the future. -
Working full time and brushing up on my knowledge by rereading some of the old textbooks that I have, and reading books for fun. In the meantime, trying to maintain a long-distance relationship that, come August, will get more intense. Trying to be as mellow as possible before the insanity in August.

I think everyone here is in agreement that it would be best to stay at your undergrad institution. One of the most interesting pieces of advice that I ever received was to go with the institution that can offer you the best financial aid package. Anything that you can do to avoid student loan debt, in my opinion, is the best thing that you can do. If you also have the opportunity to assist in the initial development of the research center, then that will be an incredibly beneficial addition to your future applications and maybe even a great learning experience. Previous posters have given some excellent advice. Good luck!

E-mailed today, rejected from the Hispanic Linguistics MA. If you check here, there are HRM-specific results, but I only see one from this year.

This week, I had to send a letter to one university to decline their conference invitation. I applied for a program at this university as well. I felt awful because I was excited to go, and even let them know that I intended to, but the travel expenses ended up being way more than what I could afford. Their response was cordial and understanding, but I still feel bad for it. Today, I received their rejection email. I'm sure that these are completely unrelated events, but it still didn't make me feel any better. I am sending positive thoughts to everyone on this thread!

This is literally me on a daily basis. Unless Old Navy starts holding 30 and 40% off grad school tuition sales, I am uninterested.

Absolutely. I know someone that graduated with a BA in Studio Art and has since completed a Master's in Clinical Counseling. The clinical Master's program at my undergrad university (I have a BA in psychology) has a very diverse background. Having hands-on experience, solid references, and showing that you are invested enough to go ahead with some preliminary coursework says a lot. Of course you would probably have to check the program requirements before you apply. If there is a psychology requirement from undergrad, it may very well behoove you to contact the program if you are truly interested. You would certainly have an interesting SOP or personal statement/history to show. I have confidence!

When I am on an admissions committee, I will....
scarvesandcardigans replied to smcg's topic in Waiting it Out
I think the only thing that I see wrong with a pre-application idea is this: What if a student is approved to apply and still gets rejected? Would that not instill some kind of false sense of hope if they had passed some kind of screening process but still didn't make it? I am in no way trying to discredit the merit behind a pre-application process, and I actually really like the idea. I'm just trying to see that it covers all the bases, I suppose. As for me personally, I think I would take the time to reach out to as many students as I can so that they have some form of personal connection to the program. It influenced my decision-making process when a professor did the same for me. I wouldn't say that reaching out guarantees that I "want" them in the program and makes them feel hopeful, but that I am interested in getting to know them on a deeper level than what I see on their application. I would be transparent about this. And, if the committee as a whole decides that they will not receive an acceptance, I will inform them of this decision and then provide my own words of support or any resources that they want that will help them in other places, whether it be another program, a job, etc. I'm all about making sure that people feel that what they are doing or what circumstances they are in will benefit them somehow. As a faculty member I might be stretched thin, but these students will be taking my place one day, and I would gladly do so to contribute to everyone's venture in the field. -
I heard maybe 2 weeks after my acceptance date. There is a professor in my department that I met at a conference and he gave me a date then. However, with the weather from mid-late February I wouldn't be surprised if other departments haven't been able to make choices. Considering the date now and the fact that grad level registration is open, I would call if you haven't done so yet! Yay congratulations! What are you studying?

What were you doing when you got accepted?
scarvesandcardigans replied to Orims's topic in Waiting it Out
Both times I received acceptances, I was sitting at my desk at work. I just kind of calmly sat there for a minute then I would whisper to my coworkers, "I got in at [whatever school]" and then they would get super excited. For my first acceptance, I called everyone that knew how stressed out I was over applications, and my coworkers basically threw a party because they both have ties to the institution. To be honest it was all very low-key. -
From Undergrad to Graduate School-What are your reasons?
scarvesandcardigans replied to a topic in The Lobby
I agree with happy little pill. Ever since I was small I have had a passion for learning and I have always loved the academic environment. I knew that I wanted to continue my education after undergrad before I had even graduated high school. My ultimate goal with my PhD is to be able to teach and remain further in the academic setting and nurture minds like what my teachers/professors did for me. And since that's a huge dream, I just didn't want to put it on hold! -
I know. Really weird. They use the same application system (Apply Yourself) as 3 other schools that I applied to, which all sent me e-mails stating that a decision had been made, so I figured that it would be the same - they make a decision and I get a status update email. But apparently not! I got a "while you wait" email actually, the day before the decision was posted online so I was under the impression they weren't even close. The deadline was March 1st, after all! It was DEFINITELY unexpected! But thanks!!

I think it's a good sign if you had two interviews! I'm relatively familiar with psych grad application processes (I earned a BA in psych) and in my opinion making it in two rounds is good! I checked the results page and I don't see anything about the public interest discipline specifically, so I'm sure they are still working. I would be anticipating a decision maybe the end of next week/the week after based on their schedule currently. State is an awesome school! I grew up 10 minutes from it. I have confidence for you!

Accepted to Albany's PhD program. I had to check the application portal. The decision came 19/2 but I didn't look until today...No word on funding, but a lot of good feelings. I am really, REALLY pulling for everyone in this thread to get what they want. You guys deserve it!

Accepted to SUNY Albany's PhD program. No word yet on funding, but this is my first PhD acceptance, straight out of undergrad, and if I could, I'd be dancing on my desk at work.
