    U of T students -

It has been a whirlwind of a past few days and I can't remember if this question as been asked already, so I'm going to ask it again. For those of you who were on the wait list, or those of you who know this information in general, how long does it take for the wait list to start moving? Does anyone have any inkling about how many people they put on the wait list? Are there actually decent odds of getting in off the wait list, or should I not focus on that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feeling pretty defeated after this round of applications!

My advice, as someone who was waitlisted last year, is to not focus on the waitlist at all. Apply for jobs (if that's your plan of action) and focus on moving forward. Try to get the best opportunities you can to strengthen your app, and remember that you're beginning to re-apply in a few short months.

That being said, accept your spot on the waitlist and whatever happens, happens. If you do find an amazing job opportunity and happen to find out in August that you've been accepted off the waitlist, you quit your job. Until then - do not focus on getting off. That's just my two cents.

Hi MSW-hopeful-2016!!  I received my offer back in February (advanced standing).  Once I sent in my deposit and acceptance of offer, I received an email of confirmation from Angela Umbrello (no further info packages).  Also, you will have to register to attend an orientation.  Mine is later this month (I am assuming yours will be the same date or shortly thereafter?) and I am thinking and hoping that they will fill us in on all the other stuff (student card, etc.) then.   If you need to know before the orientation date, maybe just email or phone Angela?  Good luck.

Thanks for the help :) I'll just be awaiting the email from Angela then. Good luck at your orientation! I'm sure the 2 year will be sometime in the coming month or so as well.

http://tcard.utoronto.ca/ for how to register for a t-card, and there is also a link on the side that explains how to set up a UTorID. Once you have your UTorID you will use that to log into your email at www.mail.utoronto.ca -- your email will automatically be your full name: firstname.lastname@mail.utoronto.ca

I think you can create your UTorID now, but sometimes there are weird dates for when you can get your T-Card (last year some people had to wait till July, I already have a t-card because I did my undergrad there, but I think I could only get it some time in the summer months as well). Here is the contact info for the T-Card office:

    Downtown Toronto (St. George) Campus
Koffler Student Service Centre214 College Street, First floor
    416-946-8047
    tcard.office@utoronto.ca

    Monday…………. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
    Tuesday………… 9:00 am to 6:00 pm

    Wednesday……. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
    Thursday……….. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
    Friday…………… 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

    sweet! thank you :)

  4. Question for past/current UofT students. Do we receive another info package in the mail once they've received our deposit/acceptance of the offer?

I was just wondering how the process works with getting a student card and getting our email set up. I wanted to browse the student housing page and i noticed you need to register with an official uoft email address.

For those of you who have been rejected/waitlisted, and you feel it's because of a low GPA, don't be discouraged!! Contrary to popular belief, UofT does actually look beyond the GPA, and my acceptance this year is proof of that. I was rejected to the program in 2014 and I thought for sure it was because of my grades (last 2 years were in the B/B+ range). That being said, I also didn't have much experience in the field, given that I was just coming out of undergrad. So, for those of you wondering what you can do to improve your application, here is what I did (it might work for you too!):

    • As soon as I got the rejection from UofT, I enrolled in George Brown's fast-track Social Service Worker program (it's a summer, plus one year ... similar to Lakehead's HBSW). I did a placement through that program, and was soon hired on as casual staff, and later on, part-time staff.
    • Through a connection at the SSW program, I got involved with a volunteer project at the City of Toronto
    • This next piece I will hugely emphasize, as UofT is highly research focused: I spent over a year volunteering in a research lab, getting authorship on publications, presentations, etc. *Tip for UofT personal statements: mention wanting to do a thesis - even though only 3 students get to do one, UofT loves the idea of having social workers become researchers/academics, as it's quite rare. This was a tip I received from one of the faculty there, and it was very useful.
    • I continued to work on my professional development, getting certifications in UMAB, harm reduction, etc.
    • I then received a full-time job in the field

It's all a process, and like previous posters have mentioned, if social work is what you're meant to do, you'll get there :) Just remember, GPA isn't everything, and I can't emphasize that enough, especially since when I was applying, people repeatedly told me that the school was "too elite" for what my grades were. *not amused*.

I can also add on to this explanation and say that the difference maker to me getting accepted this year was most definitely my addition of research experience, as well as finishing my thesis. In my personal statement, I wrote about my thesis as my greatest accomplishment, stressing the importance of evidence-based practice in the field of social work. So for those of you wait-listed (or rejected) who are struggling to find out how you can improve, in you are set on UofT as I was, really try to find experience in the research sector. Just my two cents :)

Do you know how the waitlist works? I would assume that the individual they liked would be higher up and would get an acceptance should someone decline but I have read that they don't have a list so you don't even know your ranking on the wait list

no idea how it works unfortunately. it frustrated me last year with the whole "we dont rank you" thing. even though i totally do not believe that. its not like they just pull names out of a hat once someone declines their offer.

how long did you have to wait until you heard back about the wait-list? I am in a limbo atm. i have been accepted to a counselling program which starts in May and i need to know before that..

they don't inform you if you don't get off the waitlist. from what i know, its only a couple people that get off of it, and you can find out anytime between end of April all the way until September. they recommend accepting other schools/jobs (my waitlist letter said that last year).

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted. Can you share your past experiences and grades?

I was waitlisted last year at u of t and I am sort of confused as to why this keeps happening to me. I asked Angela last year for feedback but they are always reluctant to help.

copying and pasting my experience from the previous MSW thread that was blocked...

I have my Honours BSc in Psychology. My GPA in my last year was 3.9. I got an A in research methods, and an A+ on my honours thesis.
I currently work as a research assistant at a chronic pain clinic, but aside from our own research, we also take on clinical trials in various areas (nicotine dependence, asthma, diabetes, etc). Before this position, which I started in April, I spent 5 years working at a retirement home, as a front desk concierge. Prior to this, I was a camp counselor for 2 years.

    I have volunteer experience at:

    • Bellwood Health Services (500 hours) - presently volunteer here
      • this is my most substantial experience in terms of volunteering, as it is an addiction and rehabilitation facility not only for substance use and alcoholism but for eating disorders, sex addiction and gambling addiction, allowing me to experience addiction in a multi-faceted lens. I hope to be able to get my MSW and use it to practice addiction counselling in minority populations.
    • Canadian Mental Health Association (350 hours)
    • Toronto General Hospital - eating disorder outpatient clinic (75 hours)
    • Pride Toronto (12 hours)
    • Town of Richmond Hill (300 hours)

I have practicum experience from my undergrad (about 84 hours), where I was partnered with a child with a DSM-5 diagnosis in a classroom setting, to provide peer mentoring and assistance with school-related activities.
