  1. They actually do not contact your recommenders. Once you submit they email you the link that you then can pass on to your letter writers.
  2. I uploaded my CV for that reason, I am also assuming unofficial transcripts and GRE scores uploaded to the application site are fine since they do not give any information about where to send official documents. Did I miss something for GRE and transcript submission? This site is a mess...
  3. That is very surprising! The only reason I asked was I am going on an interview/visit next weekend and there were only approximately 20 people invited to interview for a program that traditionally has a cohort between 13-15. This information makes it seem like less of an interview and more of a final screen to make sure you aren't crazy and almost everybody will be accepted.
  4. I was going to write a big long paragraph justifying this question but I decided it was easier just to ask. What percentage of offers do top programs expect to be accepted or declined (i.e do they expect everyone they accept to end up there or only like 70%)?
  5. Just a warning for everybody, if you don't hear from your programs that you've received interview invites from it may he a good idea to follow up with them. I am going to a visit this weekend and had heard nothing from them except an email to invite me and one to organize my flight. Yesterday i recieved a few, somewhat frantic, emails saying that i needed to fill out a survey and give a bunch of information ASAP and that i was supposed to give back in December. Turns out I was not on their email list for recruits and had been missing all of their messages. Luckily I got it all sorted out and I am set but I would recommend emailing the department administrator in charge of organizing the event if you have heard nothing a week or two before the visit.
  6. Just got offered an interview with Harvard Chem Bio! Interview dates are 2/3 and 2/17, is anyone else going and what date are you thinking?
  7. Happy new year everyone, I hope 2017 is healthy and successful for everyone here!
  8. Wow, where did you get this information from?
  9. Speaking of HILS, is anyone here applying to Chem. Bio? I don't think anything will come out until after the new year, at least from what the results page says, but the wait is killing me.
  10. I'm applying to Harvard Chem. Bio. do you have any opinions on the program as a whole, at least from what you're been able to gather working with students in it?
  11. Looking at results from last year it looks like early January was when they came out so I'm not giving up yet, it's just such a long time to wait!
  12. Hey, has anyone heard from UCSD BMS? I saw one person on the results page heard yesterday but nothing else.
  13. Undergrad Institution: Top 10 PublicMajor(s): Chemical EngineeringMinor: Biochemistry GPA in Major: Overall GPA: 3.63Type of Student: Domestic Male GRE Scores (revised/old version):Q: 168(95)V: 161 (88)W: 4.0 (59)Research Experience: Three and a half years (i.e starting Freshman year) in tissue engineering lab. One year in natural products (field of interest) lab. In the first lab I have been heading up a major project for the last three years and in the natural products lab I have been doing independent research since the beginning of summer. I have three publications in prep from the tissue engineering lab right now, two of which I am a middle author on and the third centers around my project that we hope will be accepted into a high impact journal like Cell. Unfortunately, none have been submitted yet and will not until possibly December or January. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: One summer fellowship between Freshman and Sophomore yearPertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for athletic department and privately last two years. Have been training undergrads, five in total, in both labs this year. Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: NahSpecial Bonus Points: PI of natural products lab is pretty big in the fieldAny Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I've been in contact with two POIs from Harvard so that might help. Applying to Where: UCSD-Biomedical Sciences Harvard-Chem. Bio. (HILS) Wisconsin-Pharmaceutical Sciences Univ. of Ill. Chicago- Pharmacognosy Kentucky- Medicinal Chemistry WUSTL- Biological Chemistry Michigan-Chemical Biology Minnesota-Medicinal Chemistry Ohio State-Pharmacognosy Arizona-Medicinal Chemistry USC-Pharmaceutical Sciences Oregon State-Pharmaceutical Sciences Florida-Medicinal Chemistry Princeton-Chemical and Biological Engineering Questions: What do you think? Do you think my Chemical Engineering major will hinder my application or help it? I think I have a reasonable list of schools. Most are colleges of pharmacy because of the nature of the field so I'm not sure how to evaluate. Any sort of feedback as to weaknesses in my app would be appreciated. Thank you!
  14. Hi, I'm wondering what my chances are for getting into a top tier university this coming application cycle. I'm interested in natural products, mostly discovery, structural elucidation, and investigating biosynthetic pathways, not so much organic synthesis of them. This is not a giant field, however, it seems that most schools have one or two people working in it which makes things a little tricky. Here are my stats. School:Top 5 U.S Public University Major: Chemical Engineering Minor:Biochemistry GPA:3.63 No GRE yet. Research Experience: First two years in a tissue engineering lab with completely new PI. One summer fellowship in this lab the other summer was full time funded by PI. Year three switched to a natural products lab doing structural elucidation with very well known PI. Working in this lab over this summer as well as a ChemE lab working on biocrude production from algae. Continuing to work in Natural product lab next school year, possible senior thesis. Pubs: One literature review co-author for tissue engineering. Hopefully one more from tissue engineering lab with my work in it but the person who was supposed to write it is leaving soon and I haven't heard anything about it lately. Doubtful anything will be more than just submitted for review by December from other labs. LoRs: Anticipating two very strong letters from tissue engineering and natural products PIs. One good one from Orgo/Biochemistry lecturer. Extras: Not sure if it matters but I have been a chemistry and math tutor for the past two years. My Questions: Do I have a shot at schools like Harvard, Columbia, CalTech, and UCSF? I'd be applying to their Chemical Biology programs or whatever they offer that is similar. Are there any huge flaws in my app that you can see from what I've posted? When talking about publications will admissions really care about a literature review? Of course I will still mention it as it is my only publication, but if they don't care I will not give it much attention. I probably have more questions but that is all I can think of at this moment. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
  15. Hello, I'm currently a Junior looking toward the upcoming application season for PhD programs. I'm interested in natural products (e.g. discovery, structural elucidation, biosynthesis, etc.) and I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for potential POIs or programs. I've done an initial literature search and have come up with some of the popular ones such as Balskus and Clardy at Harvard, Fischbach at UCSF and the slew of people at UCSD in the Scrips Institute of Oceanography. However, I keep coming up with many of the same people, which is making it hard to extend my list. Does anyone have any thoughts as to either where I should look or specific recommendations?
