  1. Hi all, I'll be applying to grad school this year. I'm interested in medical anthropology and was thinking my research interests would fit a public health PhD program. If I did any MPH, are there any programs that have an anthropological component, or have an option of a joint masters? Also if anyone's heard anything about the BU Medical Anthro and Cross cultural practice?
  2. hmm, i'm trying just to stay in the northeast/big cities. geographical preference is trumping programs for me, i think.
  3. thanks guys! I'm looking to stay in the northeast. Any suggestions? My background is anthro and I think most anthro programs want more world experience. Do I realistically have a shot at any programs?
  4. haha I kind of don't want to go to the effort of finding jobs. i was thinking if I do some sort of degree with a grounded component or internship, it would be a good mix.
  5. Thanks for the advice, guys. My top choice school is CUNY, and they said they take people both right out of undergrad and with Master's, but if anyone knows anything about the department, I'd love to hear it. Something I was thinking of is if I don't get into the PhD at CUNY, to do a) the Master's at Hunter, so I'd work with the same professors, and get instate tuition, b ) the new school master's (I'm wary of this though) if they give me funding, or c) try to get the UChicago MAPSS thing fully funded, or d) a master's in urban planning
  6. I'm an undergrad shooting for anthro phd programs. I am EXTREMELY well read in anthropology, to the point where I take PhD seminars and, though I struggled a lot at first, ended up excelling in them (I'm at an Ivy). This is what made me sure that I wanted to pursue graduate study. My thoughts are good, but they do lie in the more theoretical realm: i.e, im interested in studying, in a broad sense, violence and desire, and the history of anthropological thought in those ideas, and in the future, hopefully sited in all different places. my fieldwork is currently situated in my city, but I'm worried anthro programs will want a more global and specific project scope. how can I do an SOP that will reflect the fact that I'm a strong candidate academically, just am more theoretical/ haven't had an oppurtunity timewise to visit another country/do fieldwork there. I did do a study abroad program that greatly influenced my research interests, however. my question is, how specific a plan do you need, and any tips for showing potential in a statement?
  7. Hi guys, so just wondering who's coming right out of undergrad? I want a top school, but I'm worried that they don't like people coming right out of undergrad, so not sure if I should apply to Master's programs as well (I am planning on it) Also how many schools is everyone applying to? I'm trying to really tailor my SOP to each school and gain multiple faculty contacts, so I only have a few schools I'm focusing on, but I've seen advice that says to apply to 10+ schools. For reference, anthro undergrad, ivy league uni, 3.78 gpa, GRE 160/167/6, good amount of research and community engagement in my area of interest (gender/sexuality), so I think I'm generally a good candidate, but who knows. currently applying to :rutgers, cuny (top choice), chicago mapss, new school (ma), and looking for more suggestions!
  8. thanks! plan B is getting a degree/doing research at a university in my country of interest. its a really great school and the professors are already excited to (possibly) have me study there with them
  9. Thank you so much for the detailed reply. Let me answer these questions one by one. 1. Firstly, yeah I have looked up and picked out at least one or two professors at each school I'll be applying to. And the country isn't super uncommon, like every university teaches the language. 2. Yes, we have an intensive year long senior thesis seminar/workshop so I'll also get a lot of one on one time with faculty in my department. I use Atlas for research I'm currently doing. I'll also try to present at a conference. 3. Studying for it now. 5. Yeah, won't get a letter from my advisor, but I have great relationships with a lot of professors in my department who would be more than happy to write me a recommendation, and am taking a course with a "famous" professor this semester who has research interests exactly like mine. I'm just looking at the results board for different schools and its terrifying, makes me almost not want to apply
  10. Hey guys! Haven't really started applications, still seeing where I want to apply! I'm sociocultural, with a heavy theoretical bent
  11. Hi all, I'm a senior anthro major and I'd like to apply to graduate programs but I have no idea where to apply or if I'm even a valid candidate. The basics: -Ivy League University, 3.75 GPA I don't have a ton of "research" experience in anthro, because my department has just about the WORST advising ever and they all basically ignore my emails and say "yeah just apply wherever, you'll be good". And they also haven't given me oppurtunities for research, but I am doing research with another anthro department in my same city. I've also taken PhD seminars at my university and gotten A's in them, because my advisor said I should do some graduate level work in undergrad to see if I like it. I have a bunch of internships and am specifically interested in anthropology of policy, specifically in Europe (did a summer course in said country and am taking the language now, not a common country), where I did do fieldwork. I'm also into more critical theory and the study of transgression/deviance/sexuality. What should I be doing now, and should I be applying to Master's or PhD programs? I want to stay in the Northeast, New York, New Jersey or Boston so all I know now is that Rutgers is a top choice. Do I have a chance or no?
