  1. @nevermind if that's the case with HoS, then I'm kinda screwed. I feel like Harvard's class was pretty diverse; I also looked at the profiles, many came from non-ivies or smaller colleges (though many were harvard undergrads). I have a BA from an Ivy, but no Master's, so I guess that places me in a weird liminal space of a prestigious undergrad but no master's. But I'd like to think that its probably the same 30-40 applicants applying to most HoS departments, so hopefully that spreads out the acceptances.
  2. @Neist that's still pretty rough! May I ask which program had the low numbers? But yeah some anthropology programs i've seen take maybe five people out of hundreds of applications. It's like, how do you even know who will get in and who won't. So scary.
  3. It's funny how we're all in such disparate fields! the anthropology thread is pretty dead haha...i'm kinda hoping this means less applicants this year, but that's wishful thinking.
  4. I submitted mine all just at the deadlines, I'm obsessive and literally spent all my free time rewriting everything again and again.
  5. I've been trying to work out more, I had hoped that once I finished apps I would magically start working out more but it hasn't happened. I'm going to make an effort, starting today!
  6. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny at least you've gotten into places! @raaawr welcome!
  7. ha! tbh that's what I was planning on, partly. my mentor said presentation is very important when giving talks, and definitely to get my nails and hair done
  8. @morifol @Pink Fuzzy Bunny thanks all! Honestly the less people at the talk the better hehe. Also, pretty sure the guy who invited me insinuated on the talk invitation that I'm a professor, when alas, I am a 21 year old undergrad. Some people might be surprised, to say the least
  9. I've been asked to give a talk at a place i'm applying, but a different department. Even though they're not directly the ones judging my app, I keep feeling like it was a prank that I was asked to speak! Imposter syndrome is so real!
  10. It's crazy, I'm in a pretty good university, though my major is only 8 people in my year, but I know ZERO other seniors applying to grad school, in my major or any others, except for my best friend going for an MSW. I tried to get some other people in my major to apply to grad schools so I'd have someone else to commiserate with but they all wanted to gtfo of school haahaha
  11. I'm a weirdo and save all my class readings for my favorite classes because I like the thought of lending out my copies of Foucault and levi-strauss and stuff to students. In terms of complaining, I haven't told friends I'm applying (don't want to jinx things) so I'm going crazy with nowhere to vent hehe
  12. Anyone else thinking of throwing in a last minute app? I found a school that I hadn't considered, but has a really great fit, and deadline is february 1st. I kinda want to apply but feel bad for my letter writers!
  13. hey all! Yeah I've noticed that this thread is quiet, lets make it not that way! Personally, I'm freaking out and after reading back my SOP's I handed in, not the happiest with them! Pretty sure I'll hear from all my schools in late february. Still haven't sent in applications to two master's programs I'm thinking of applying to as backups, because I'm frankly exhausted! Just got a new position as TA and will try to send an updated CV to all my schools. Otherwise, I've been making myself crazy by thinking about how common it is to not get in anywhere! ahh so stressful
  14. I don't have to, basically all I need to do is write the rest of my thesis, but my school is annoying and money grubbing and so you pay by semester. So I'll be paying the same amount if I take one course or five, so I think I'm going to take 3 probably that directly relate to my thesis. I'll also be a teaching assistant (just heard today!!) and so I wish I had known about that to put on my apps. Also, congrats to everyone who has interviews. I haven't heard a peep!
  15. guys I have such senioritis I just realized I'm only signed up for one class. i totally forgot I'm actually still in school
  16. Ah I haven't even had positive response to applications. I'm trying to figure out if I should contact a POI at my top choice or if it would be annoying at this point.
  17. I haven't even been getting many hits on my Academia.edu profile, so I'm kind of worried!
  18. Hey all....what do y'all think about emailing POI's? I had an informal chat with one in November, he said sometimes its good to go to lectures held by the department in the spring semester to get yourself known. Would it be weird to check in with him, say something about my thesis and his work, or just check in? Or should I not?
  19. I'm in the northeast, I have a lot of good tips! i'm pretty into fashion and actually like dressing for the cold better, I'm going up to Canada for an visit next week, and that type of cold is my next challenge! I wear lots of black (its a nyc thing!), heeled boots, scarves, blazers, and sweaters. Tights are also great to transition dresses into colder weather clothing!
  20. hi all, just wanted to introduce myself! I've sent in about 7 ma and phd application, and am kinda dying while waiting to hear back
  21. yeah in my graduate classes (I'm an undergrad) I'd say most are 27-31, and two friends of mine who TA are 33 and no one bats an eye. If anything, it can be a positive thing. I'm applying right out of undergrad, and I know a lot of professors have been wary of that for me, they like people to have real world experience.
  22. Me as well!
  23. If so, where? I know it's a small field and I've just recently realized that it's a great fit for my project. I'm also wondering if there are any good Master's programs in history of medicine!
