Hey all, I'm a bit late, but I'm interested in history of medicine! anyone else? Also, any recommendations of history of science PhD or Master's programs that are still open for application? Also, do you all think it's ok that I used an anthropology thesis for my writing sample? It was all primary source research, but most of it more current.

Hi, I'm interested in a specific history program that has a lot of faculty that relate directly to my interests in Anthropology. Would anyone with some background in History of Science/Medicine be willing to give me some tips? I'd prefer to PM about this, just because my proposed research is so so specific, but I'd like to run my proposed research question by someone. Thanks!

Anyone applying to McGill/know anything about the competitiveness of the department, for an MA? Also, how hard is it generally to switch from anthropology to sociology? My interests are in sociopolitical movements and health, but I'm interested in mainly ethnography.

kinda freaked out I won't get in anywhere, because I know that's very common, especially coming right from undergrad. Applications are mostly submitted but I feel like it's somewhat an exercise in futility

For those who went straight from undergrad to grad...
anthrostudentcyn replied to Ilikekitties's topic in Anthropology Forum
The best advice I've hard about a PhD program is hat they're not accepting you as a student; they're accepting you as a colleague and researcher. This means, personally, I speak to potential POI's much more professionally and in a different tone than student/teacher, but it also means having the confidence to do that. They are accepting you to do your original research; and responsibility comes with that. Furthermore, you might be expected to TA or even teach a course in your first few years, so they want someone who can handle that. Basically, its more than being a star student. -
Approximate acceptance rate of UIUC?

I'd also be interested to know for any of the major schools, what acceptance rates are! -
ha I would be happy to get ANY offer, but I'm worried just because I'm coming straight out of undergrad and don't have publications or a ton of abroad experience, and only one invited talk. On the plus side, the MA that I'm applying for is actually in what's been my dream city to live in so hopefully any way it goes, it'll be good.

Berkeley, CUNY (top choice), Columbia Sociomedical Sciences, UCSD, and Princeton, as well as an MA in another field. Scary that everyone's going for the same few programs!

@MedAnth077 Welcome! I'm applying for med anthro too! I'd love to hear where everyone's applying, I'm still looking to add a school or two!

@busybee I love your attitute and I totally agree! I literally never thought I could work this hard, so it's pretty cool. I feel like I so much don't feel like I have a chance that I'm not even going to be nervous during the waiting period, I've kind of already resigned myself to doing a program that I'm pretty sure I'll be accepted to that's not a PhD program (though that's the dream)

I've submitted 2/5, I honestly don't think I have a realistic chance of getting in anywhere, but I figured I might as well go for it. It's a relief to have the first few in, it gets easier after that! anyone else in their senior year? I'm also stressing out about finals

Hi so under "program materials" for Mailman, there's a documents section and a "questions section" that includes information about professors, scholarships, etc. I keep filling it in and the "save" button is greyed out, and then keeps deleting my answers! What should I do? Is this because my LORs aren't in?

UC Berkeley SOP length?
anthrostudentcyn replied to meow's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
My UCB app is asking for 2000 words. I'm kinda scared haha. -
I would! PM me!

Hi guys, so as the deadlines loom closer I'm finalizing which writing sample I'm going to use. My only issue is that the paper I want to use is not for an anthro class, it's for a Comp. Lit/philosophy course. It's a close reading of the work of a major theorist (used in anthro extensively) focusing on sexuality and illness in his text. It got an A in a grad seminar (I'm an undergrad) My options: 1. add a few paragraphs to look at a specific situation in current society his theory would explain-aka make it more anthropological with the addition of a few paragraphs 2. leave it as it is, as a comp lit paper and risk it not being anthropology. i'm also worried it may be too simplistic of an argument. Thoughts would be great.

Hey guys, just wondering, how many programs are you applying to? I'm thinking of applying to 3-4 but I'm not sure if that number is way too low. At this point its a matter of what I have time to finish before deadlines and I may only have time for 4, but would that be horrible? I'm also have funded master's that tracks into a PhD where I'd be happy to go to, but I don't know if it's better to apply to more like 8-10

Hi, I'm another applicant so idk how much help I'd be, but I'm up for looking it over!

I guess I'd question the describing your research experience. My advisor for my department (anthro) told me to not talk AT ALL about what I've done, but just to talk about what I WILL do. So my SOP is coming out a lot more like a research proposal. This may be a bit extreme, but I'd question the necessity of talking about your research experience, when presenting your ideas would be an example of "showing, not telling" your intellectual capacity.

I want the postdoc because he could say something about my academic growth: it was a five person PhD seminar (and I'm at an ivy), the first class I was terrified and told him I wanted to quit, he told me to stick it out, and by the end of the class my intellectual work greatly improved as well as my analytical thinking and reasoning in a grad-school like way, and in the comments on my final paper he gave me an A and said I quickly came to be the most insightful student in the course. the professor: embarassingly, I got a B+ in the 101 class in my major, a B+ in an advanced seminar in my major, and an A in a theory class in my major. i feel like he likes me, but im not a favorite of his.

Hi, so I am having huge trouble with LOR's for my upcoming December 1 deadlines. I have 2 recs down, but trouble coming up with a third. My options: 1. Professor who I've taken 3 classes with but who inexplicably gave me B+s two of those semesters, and an A in another 2. Post Doc fellow who I did really well in his class which was a PhD seminar as a junior undergrad-> he says it might damage my app to have not a full time faculty What's a better option? also how do you ask politely for recs when I feel like I'm annoying the hell out of them and hugely inconveniencing them? im not a veery assertive person

Yeah I'm just not sure the level of specificity. I have basically my idea, what I want to study, and a few angles I want to approach it from, but I've read SOP's that literally had their whole argument, and were basically dissertation proposals. I don't want mine to be weirdly specific, but also not too broad. Arghh, so tough.

Yeah I would go to a program if it was perfect, but I've lived in NYC my whole life and I really can't see myself spending 7+ years in a small college town, it just doesn't fit with my lifestyle and I know I'd be unhappy.

Hmm, yeah this is my problem. I've found Master's programs that are fully funded, but if my ultimate goal is PhD, it seems silly to waste the time on a Master's. But at the same time, I've found a Master's in a related field that would be quite marketable on its own, so I'm thinking of doing that, because its only one year, fully funded, and would put me in a great place for jobs after. Also how specific is everyone's SOP?
