Reject unfunded offer at my top school?
anthrostudentcyn replied to anthrostudentcyn's topic in Decisions, Decisions
@farflung @rising_star @fuzzylogician @MathCat So I am having coffee with the DGS today (he asked). Any tips for staying professional but firm in my expectations and need for funding? I've never had a full time job so haven't really ever had "salary negotiations" or anything. -

Anthro MA @ New School for Social Research?

Any others comments on this program? I am mostly fully funded there but don't know what it would really give me if I already have decent coursework experience and grades. -

I'm waiting on funding! Even more stressful than acceptances. -
Reject unfunded offer at my top school?

Yeah, it was spring break last week! I'm just worried, because if it's a no across the board, I'd rather just say no now and accept other work/intern offers. -
Reject unfunded offer at my top school?

Thanks all, it seems like people are saying various things but all good advice. @fuzzylogician @MathCat @rising_star @naomi6 I contacted the chair, but he says he's not free to meet for two weeks. Optimally, I'd like to meet as soon as possible to ask about deferment, other school scholarships, etc, and feel like waiting to meet until right before the deadline isn't a good sign. Is there any way I should phrase the fact that I'd like to know a bit sooner, or do I just have to wait it out? -

@svent yup i agree. what im asking is for any tips on negotiating or ways to not burn bridges with this school -
Hey all, I got an unfunded PhD offer at my top school, really unique program, but as of now its unfunded. They told me I'd get an RA job that would cover part or most of tuition, but I haven't heard anything definite. Should I just outright say no, should I attempt to negotiate with them, should I wait it out, should I ask to defer a year? Friends are pressuring me to take the offer, but I don't know. On the other hand, there's no guarantee I'd get in anywhere else if I apply next year (was reject from 5 other PhD programs, this is my only acceptance). I'm currently an undergrad. Either way, this school and group of researchers is my top choice, and I want the opportunity to possibly go here some time in the future, if not this year, so I don't want to burn bridges. Advice?

People always talk about GRE scores, and I really don't think it means that much, unless they are really bad. Mine were 160/167/6, which is decent, but still only got one acceptance out of many (I'm in anthro, however). If I reapply next year, there are many other parts of my application that I'll choose to work on, GRE scores definitely NOT being one them.

to the CUNY rejection on the board, did you hear from POI or form letter?

Can anyone give insight on typical funding packages in public health? I'm trying to evaluate my offer against the standard. Feel free to PM! -
just emailed two grad coordinators asking for status updates. i am so weak.

I keep thinking every Monday "this will be it, I'll hear from all my programs"..... and yet I still have not heard from five. FIVE!
-
anyone claiming the toronto post?
-
For anyone waiting on Toronto IHPST: I was told last Monday that it would be "a week at the latest". So who knows.
-
I agree, I'm waiting on a school where tons of people have gotten both acceptances and rejections about a month ago, and they keep telling me they are still making decisions.
-
My opinion: yes, take a few classes, but also work in something somewhat related to your field. Maybe get a job at a library, or a museum, and spend a TON of time on applications. Like, start them the end of spring, and work on them until November/Decemeber. Try to find a job that pays decently, because extra money saved up will ALWAYS be handy in grad school.

I'm in the same situation, being wait listed for funding. If j don't get it and it's my only acceptance, would a good idea be to apply again next year?
-
Any CUNY updates? If I haven't been contacted am I screwed?

Is it worth applying to PhD programs straight out of undergrad?
anthrostudentcyn replied to love2read's topic in History
Ok my opinion: as someone who applied out of undergrad, but only has one PhD acceptance that I may decline. I think if you have a really specific project, apply, go for it, but I also think aplying the fall AFTER you graduate might be best. This is mostly for logistics reasons: a) I had my half my senior thesis due on the same day as many of my applications. It was a ridiculous amount of work.b ) you will have a year between undergrad and a phd instead of going right in and c) if you have a senior thesis, that will be fully done. Overall, I think it's really up to you! -
@ladyobscure Can't you ask the admissions coordinator and say that you didn't receive anything? have you tried logging into the portal?
-
I'm still holding out for Toronto. And Mcgill anthro. these canadian schools are killing me!
-
But I think some schools really don't notify until March (I'm thinking Canadian ones). So if nothing has been posted on the board I wouldn't lose hope yet.

@Neist so happy for you! I'm in a similar waitlist funding situation..what did they tell you originally about how likely getting off the waitlist was?
