  1. I asked my professor who is on a graduate admission committee what they like to see and she responded with this: Have at least 2-3 people read your personal statement to check if it has correct grammar, good flow, and addresses all parts of the prompt the university gives you. Do not try too hard to impress! Be honest, authentic, and not too braggy. They've seen a million and one personal statements talking about how the applicant wants to help people. This is okay, but more importantly, it is good to connect your personal strengths and interests to speech language pathology. They want to see that you understand the field you're about to go into. Don't mix up your schools! Make sure that you don't have the name of another school in your personal statement because this is definitely an application killer. You should include why you're interested in that particular school/program.
  2. It really depends on the school district. I live in California, and you can view the salaries of speech pathologists in their district if you go to the school district's website. For my local school district, you can reach 100k in about five years. Starting is around 80k I believe. But again, I would check the school district websites. In terms of ease, I would shadow a school SLP. For some people, school SLP work is manageable, but it may not be so for others.
  3. The GPA for the CSUs is something I would like to know as well. I know some schools look at overall, some just the CMSD classes, and some just the last 90 units you've taken. As for the medical setting schools, I think all the schools technically have some avenue for you to specialize in the medical setting if you so choose to. Schools with medical associations would be my school, Loma Linda University, and I believe San Francisco State as well. But really, all of them offer a way to specialize in a medical setting if you wanted to.
  4. Hi! Follow up question! The cal states require three letters of recommendation, correct?
  5. I have a sister who decided to go to Portland State University for SLP, but found that the program was so poorly designed and managed that she decided to switch to special education. She had spent a lot of time in school and she started doubting if she'd be able to finish the program on time. She described it as average, maybe even erring on the side of a little below average.
  6. Thank you all for your helpful replies! I'm a bit miffed about having to use CSDCAS for just one school (CSUF), but I suppose it can't be helped.
  7. Hello all, I'm trying to wrangle together all the parts I'll need to apply for Fall 2018! I've been trying to find out where to send letters of recommendation for the Cal States. I noticed that on CSUMentor, it says you should mail the letters to the department coordinator for CSU Fullerton. Would that be Ying-Chiao Tsao? And do I just put the address of the university on there? Also, is it the same for CSULB and SDSU?
  8. oops, should have been clearer! I'm applying for Fall 2018 slot, but applying during the Fall 2017 season.
  9. I'm applying for this coming Fall and I'm trying to get organized with my schools. All but one of my schools of interest are in California and I'm noticing a lot of the California SLP schools prefer that you fill out their own individual university application + a department application. From what I can see, only CSU Fullerton has the option for CSDCAS. The list of the schools I am looking into is CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, San Francisco State, and San Diego State. Do I need to submit their university application, department application, and CSDCAS?
  10. After some months of lurking around on The Grad Cafe, I'm finally making a post! I'm currently an incoming 3rd year undergrad Communication Sciences and Disorders major at Loma Linda University, and I just wanted some advice from the graduates or soon-to-be graduates for properly prepping myself for grad schools. The schools I'm thinking of applying to (in order of preference!) are: SDSU (top school!) University of Washington, Seattle (CoreSLP) Chapman University CSU Long Beach CSU Fullerton Loma Linda University (lol) My stats currently are: GPA: 3.55 (I haven't taken any SLP classes yet, this is all general ed/pre-reqs) Extra Curriculars: 6 years of academic tutoring with children shadowing experience with elementary school SLPs and private clinic SLPs Professional experience: a speech pathology paid research internship at a university's research facility GRE: I've just begun to study this summer! If anyone could offer me advice to make me a competitive applicant (especially for SDSU!) I'd greatly appreciate it. (Also, if this kind of post is frowned upon in this community, you have my sincere apologies and I'll remove the post!)
