Lots of remarks about my grades making me noncompetitive and that the application needed further development (which is super true). Did say that my LORs were very strong.
    Will try again next year!

(why the f*** did I get downvoted for this?)

I AM HERE TO CONFIRM THAT THE RESULTS ARE INFACT BEING POSTED TONIGHT. USER LOGINS AND EMAILS HAVE BEEN DELETED FROM THE GRFP SITE, SIMILAR TO PREVIOUS YEARS. ALSO OTHER PARTS OF FASTLANE ARE FUNCTIONAL, JUST NOT THE GRFP AREA. I WILL SEE ALL OF YOU BRAVE SOULS AT 2AM!!!!!!!!! BEST OF LUCK!!!

So that is 3 pages (PS+RB+FG) instead of 4 pages (PS+PR), and then RP stays the same. That is a shame because it's always harder to write well in fewer pages, you don't have space to flesh out your argument. I suspect this is the result of reviewers complaining about having to read 6 pages, and/or increased review load combined with the governmental budget crisis (which impacts NSF's ability to pay reviewers). Of such banal considerations are momentous changes made.

Not that it's too important, but for future years, the rejection email was titled:
2012 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Notification

I would find the email address for nsf, and email them a note explaining what you said on phone. That way there is an actual paper trail of how the mistake happened.

I'll start with this one. There is no such thing as a safety school. A school is either a good fit or not. A poorly ranked school doing research in everything you're not interested in, will reject you. Before you apply make sure the program is a good fit.

What about everyone else. What do you wish you'd known at the beginning?

Hi lastminute, I'm in social sciences too, and was having similar concerns but ultimately feel at peace. Can I ask what the schools you were choosing between, or among, are? And what your field is? I can offer my honest, unbiased opinion on your options and your final decision.

schoolpsych_hopeful reacted to LJK in Accepted, deadline coming, still waiting for other schools
Do not accept an offer with the intent to decline it later! If you have time to not make a decision, use it. Contact the other program and explain that you have a deadline coming up and you would like a status update on your application. If they can't make a decision yet and consider you still in the running, contact the school you have an offer from and see if you can get the deadline extended. But regardless, until you absolutely have to, don't put yourself in the position of promising to attend one school while still hoping to actually attend another - its just headaches all around.

    Hi all,

As you may know, recently there was a nuclear reactor accident in Japan. While being very happy to be admitted to Stanford, I started to have some concerns about California after this event. Do you think this should be taken into account while deciding the graduate school? There are numerous schools in california, would we expect a decrease in the rate students accept offers from these schools?

schoolpsych_hopeful reacted to neuropsychosocial in Favorite sandwich?
I have always hated sandwiches and bread. I do not like them in a box. I do not like them with a fox. I do not like them in a house. I do mot like them with a mouse. I do not like them here or there. I do not like them anywhere. (That's a Dr. Seuss reference, for anyone spared Seuss growing up.)

However, I once had this amazing sandwich in Vermont: french toast made from sourdough bread, ham, sharp cheddar, and real maple syrup... yum! I salivate, just thinking about it.

Dude, you should have let them down more gently. Say something like, "It's not you, it's me. I'm just not ready for such a big committment at this time in my life." Tell them how beautiful they are and that they're gonna find someone better anyway. "I don't deserve you" is a nice thing to add. Of course, there will still be a lot of tears. This is normal. After a week or so, once they meet some new people, their wound (left by you) will slowly begin to heal. Who knows? In a year, maybe you'll meet them at a bar somewhere, or a coffee shop, and you can sit down, smile, and laugh about the good times you were able to share.

The real question is: Are you ready to forgive yourself and move on?

This must surely rank as one of the geekiest threads I've seen in a long time. I'm fairly certain that at the moment you typed "intellectual infatuation" millions of schoolyard bullies around the globe suddenly halted in their tracks or bolted out of bed and pounded their fists into their palms, not knowing why, but consumed with a desire to hurt somebody somewhere!

schoolpsych_hopeful reacted to chaospaladin in It's alright to e-mail about why you were rejected...
I don't think it is rude or awkward to ask this question, and I know of some PhD programs that encourage rejected applicants to ask the committee why they got rejected and what areas they could improve on. Reapplying to programs you got rejected shows that you have determination.

Just be honest and straight up saying you wanted to know why you were rejected. Honestly, I don't even see how a rejected applicant would even feel proud or pompous considering they got rejected.

    hello everyone!

It seems unfair to ask applicants to wait this long for a decision. i've been accepted to three schools and am waiting to hear from 5 or 6. It's hard to organize visits without knowing the dates of the recruitment events!
