  1. One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were spreading throughout town. Nobody with pyromania thought grilled cheese would spontaneously erupt into nine identical squirrels! Nevertheless, the penguins elucidated the benefits of sparkling water from Iceland. Suddenly, Iceland exclaimed, "Enough!!! No more penguins. Kill all of the arcades on Monday because King Arthur suffered from sphenisciphobia." Tragically, everyone forgot lasers cure bug madness, meaning none of them
  2. My eyes are glued to my computer, refreshing my email every two minutes. I feel like I'm Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Oh, the torture!

  4. The stories in this thread are very inspiring! I just turned 32 y.o. exactly 2 weeks ago. I completed my MA when I was 28. Returned to my home country (I am an Int'l student) and started teaching at a top public university in my home country, and waited 2 years before applying to a PhD program. I failed my first attempt of applying to a PhD program (only applied to one program... I know, a mistake), so I waited another year. This is my second attempt; I have been offered to 2 programs, one of which with super generous 5-year funding. I am in my early 30s, married with no children, but I never feel old Always young at heart... and there's a proverb from my culture that says "you are never too old to get an education" Good luck to everyone here!
  5. I'm still waiting to hear from University of British Columbia (PhD in Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice Studies). I check my email every 2 hours...
  6. Hi @Aurél !! Congratulations on being admitted!! I've been offered admission to the ASE PhD program at USC too!! And I'm an international student just like you I am applying with an external funding from my home country, but they also offer me a 5 year funding package. It seems that they have plenty of funding opportunities. I think what matters most is how the department is a good fit with your research interests. I personally am amazed of what the faculty members do at USC, as well as the alumnus placements. I've read some books written by faculties and alumnus, which triggers me to choose ASE PhD program at USC as one of my top programs to apply. I also personally know one alumni of ASE PhD program at USC - and she speaks so highly of her almamater. Btw, I applied to 5 programs, so far have gotten 2 offers (PhD in ASE at USC and PhD in Global Studies at UCSB), but I am still waiting for decisions from 3 other programs I applied to before I decide where to enrol. Congrats to other admits too. Good luck to us all.
  7. You are right. I tried my best to stay professional and asked them to take out my paper again. I also expressed that "I am very unhappy" that this is happening, and this "may have caused me trouble" (those are already my 'very angry' expression).
  8. Hello @fuzzylogician, thank you for your comment. It's in the field of humanities. I am not sure if the proceeding is peer-reviewed, but the proceeding has ISSN and DOI. I did asked the committee to take out my publication right away when I found out the first time, and they did. But about 3 weeks later (which is yesterday), I googled the manuscript title and it was still appearing again in their online proceeding. I have no idea why they did this. I have emailed the committee again for the 2nd time (a very angry email!), asking them to fix this again, but I haven't heard from them yet. I suspect that the committee is being deceitful. First time it might have been an honest mistake. But, the 2nd time? Why? They knew I was already submitting the manuscript to a different journal... I will write updates once I've heard from the conference committee.
  9. I am freaking out and I would really appreciate any suggestion. My manuscript has been published without my permission in a conference proceeding while at the same time, the same paper is being reviewed to be published in a different journal. I did present my research in a small conference in July 2015, which is why they have access to my manuscript. However, I did not submit my paper to be published in the proceeding, and I specifically requested them not to publish my manuscript in their proceeding because I had been planning to submit my full paper to a respectable journal in the field. In October 2015, the conference committee has confirmed by email that they will not publish my paper in their proceeding, which is why I submitted my manuscript to the journal. However, when the conference proceeding was published online in their website in February 2016, I was shocked to find out that my paper is still published in the proceeding. Thinking that they might have made a mistake, I immediately asked them to republish the proceeding without my paper, which they did immediately, and apologized. However, today I found out that somehow my paper is still included in their online proceeding. I am afraid that the journal editors will think that I have violated their publication ethics - worst case I will be blacklisted to publish in their publication. What should I do? This is my first manuscript submission and I already mess it up. I'm trying not to have a panic attack *breathe*
  10. I'm an international student (Southeast Asian) applying to American Studies and Ethnic Studies. UC Berkeley (PhD, Comparative Ethnic Studies), Univ. of Nottingham UK (PhD, Critical Theory and American Studies), Sussex University UK (PhD American Literature). I have a BA in English from University of Indonesia, an MA in Asian American Studies from a state university in California, some honors, international conference talks, and a Fulbright scholarship. Excellent TOEFL score, but low GRE scores. Thankfully the programs I'm applying to don't ask for GRE scores. Will have strong recommendation letter, and I've been in touch with a potential advisor who encouraged (implied?) that I should apply to his program. I'm so nervous! I've been revising my SoP, personal history statement, sample writing, etc a million times and I still feel that they're not good enough. I wish everyone a good luck!
