  1. In the past, UW has typically interviewed people (via phone) not for admission but to help decide who among the tentative admits to nominate for university-wide fellowships. It's possible that "feeler" calls play some role in admissions decisions, though.
  2. Your interests sound like they would actually be a great fit with Wisconsin; if you didn't apply or get in this time around, you might try again the year you get your MA. For a Masters, you could certainly do well at any of the three programs you're choosing among; I'd say give great weight to funding packages, benefits, and quality of life (UCLA doesn't fund most MA students, right?).
  3. I'd say it depends on funding. You're gambling enough by undertaking a fully funded Ph.D.; IMHO it makes no sense to go into debt for a film studies MA. Wait to get in somewhere with funding and benefits, whether it's an MA or Ph.D. track.
  4. Wisconsin def. belongs in top tier rather than Michigan or Rochester, though as everyone has noted, it depends on subfields. The Michigan program is just too new to know much.
