  1. This looks very interesting! Should I go ahead and download the app?
  2. I currently really dislike my job and cannot wait to leave. Even worse are my co-workers. I spoke with my boss a few weeks ago about some concerns I was having and she seemed concerned. Now it's a few weeks later, nothing was done, and it seems to be getting worse. I work for a large company with several individuals in the corporate and HR section. Should I reach out to the regional direction (the boss of my boss) or confront my boss again hoping something will actually get done this time? There seems to be issues with communication throughout my boss and my coworkers, I seem to be receiving a lot of attitude lately, things are a little unfair, and I just don't feel appreciated there. I cannot WAIT to leave. Suggestions? Comments? Tips? Thanks!
  3. Thanks so much for this information @iwearflowers. I will definitely search for positions using the tips you provided. I would be interested in looking for non-profit social science research firms such as the one you work for. Should I search for non-profit research firms since I don't know the name of each specific company? I'm really hoping I can gain a position to get some experience and I won't have to worry too much about not being familiar with different software programs.
  4. I have a Bachelors degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences (Speech Therapy). I was going to pursue a Masters degree in Speech too, but I changed my mind and decided on Sociology. I recently just found out about medical sociology programs after I already started my program. I would definitely be interested in that since I like anything relating to medicine, but I'm hoping to go into medical research.
  5. I have not thought about private companies, no. I can do some research looking for private companies where I live now, but I don't plan to live here forever. Ill look everywhere and see what I find. I'm not too worried about nothing having experience with other software programs or a BA/BS in Sociology as I am about not having experience. I'm going to search indeed tonight and see what I can find. I'm hoping to get several applications/resumes submitted and hopefully I'll hear from someone soon. I noticed you're in a Sociology program as well. Which school are you attending if you don't mind sharing? Also, are you in an online or in-person program?
  6. Hey @JSTOBIAS!! Yeah, it's been awhile. This Master's program has been a little crazy. It seems like I only have time for working full time and studying. Hah. Thanks so much for this information! I will definitely check indeed by searching for 'research assistant' as you mentioned. I'm hoping I will find some options that I can apply fr. Another thing I'm worried about, that I forgot to mention, is that some companies require experience and knowledge with statistical software. I have a little experience using SPSS from a stats course I completed within my program. All companies are different, so I'm not really sure which software programs to become familiar with. There are so many! I will consider the VA too and I will research options at the university here as well. I have looked at a few research positions within the university and most require experience. It seems like Ill never get experience if I can't gain a position that requires experience. Seems like a giant circle, but I will definitely keep looking. I don't have a BS/BA degree in Sociology, so I'm a bit new to the field. I really liked the stats and research methods course I completed. I wouldn't mind working with stats all day either. And I'm interested in conducting research and analyzing data. Anything related to research and stats is interesting. I'm going to keep looking and hopefully Ill be able to gain some experience somewhere. And I prefer they are paid positions, so I can leave my current position, start something new, and gain experience. Thanks for the help. Any other suggestions are appreciated!
  7. I am currently enrolled in an online Master's program in Sociology and would like to go into research. I am most interested in medicine and the medical field, but I would enjoy research in any areas. I don't have a Bachelors degree in Sociology and also don't have any research experience. I have been googling different research options and researching, on my own, different types of research I can do with a masters in Sociology, but most positions and companies prefer experience. I have reached out to a few companies and am currently waiting for a response, but I'm trying to determine the best way to obtain experience. I am also a little worried about not being able to gain a research position once I obtain my degree because I don't have any research experience. Can anyone give me suggestions, tips, or your opinions on gaining experience? Also, does anyone know about types of research I can do with a masters in Sociology? Any suggestions or information on medical research? Any suggestions and tips are appreciated.
  8. Im curious, how does everyone prefer to take notes from textbooks? Do you type them out or write them by hand? Do you outline the chapters or only write down the most important information from each of them? Im getting a head start and have already started reading the first chapter of my text for my class that starts next week. Its very interesting, but I dont really like the layout of the book and how its written. There is no glossary either. Should I write down the important points from each chapter and create my own glossary that I can use to help me prepare for quizzes and exams? Im looking for feedback. Im stuck with how to best to take notes. I know it varies from person to person, but Im looking for feedback. Let me know!
  9. How does everyone prefer to make note of important information/concepts in textbooks? I like highlighters but I normally dont prefer to highlight my textbooks. I normally underline information using a pencil but am curious about other options. Let me know!
  10. This helps too, thanks. I actually looked for other stats courses within the dept and the only other course is the undergrad stats class that corresponds with the grad level stats class I took. I have not looked within different departments yet, but I will. I actually dont have a required grad level course to take the first section of Spring semester, so I enrolled in an undergrad Sociology course to help meet credit requirement. Since classes start next Mon, I think its too late to switch courses and try to find another stats course I could take. Also, Im in an accelerated program online and Im afraid to take two course at once, especially stats. I wish I thought of this before. Now Im worried about not having enough stats experience and knowledge.
  11. This definitely helps, thanks guys. I want to learn as much as I can so I can be prepared for a research position once I graduate. Im new to this field, so I dont know what software programs to be familiar with or how much stats I need to know. I already took the required stats course within my program, but Im hoping to learn even more. I know its early, but Im afraid I wont be able to gain a research position because of my lack of experience or knowledge with software programs and stats. I would like to do research within the healthcare system or with pharmaceuticals. Any suggestions about these areas?
  12. I am interested in healthcare and medicine, family studies, education, and more. I would be interested in doing research in any field. Would you say that knowing stats would be the most important thing to know? I dont have any experience and dont have knowledge with statistical software programs other than SPSS. Im hoping this doesnt decrease my chances of obtaining employment. I wonder if I should become familiar with some of the stats software programs?
  13. Does anyone know what type of research is available for someone with a Masters degree in Sociology? I just browsed some job openings to see the different job requirements and options that are available, but I'm sure there are plenty more. As long as a company is looking for a research candidate, I'm assuming I could conduct research in many different areas? I'm taking the first Capstone of my program this Spring and hope to learn much more about research and the career areas I am interested in. I just wanted to check here too just in case others had more information for me. Also, would I most likely be analyzing research rather than conducting it and finding it on my own? Please let me know. Any responses and suggestions are appreciated.
  14. Does anyone have a favorite website or preference of a company they use to order textbooks? I am currently an online student, so I prefer to order my textbooks online and have them shipped to me. I also prefer a hard copy of the textbook rather than PDF or ebook. I normally order from the cheapest, but reliable, websites I can find. I'm making a final decision about one last course I want to take next Spring and have been looking over the required textbooks. A few of them are older editions and I can only find new copies. They are over $200 in price. Give me your recommendations. Amazon.com? Textbooks.com? Any other suggestions? Textbooks are incredibly expensive and if I can save any money at all possible, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
  15. I just thought of something else relating to research... I've been browsing research positions online just to see what the job details are and what companies require. Most of them require knowledge with several types of programming software such as SPSS and Python. As I'm not sure which company I will be working for and I don't think I can become familiar with all programming software, how should I become familiar with these so that I have the knowledge needed when I apply for positions? I can research them and become somewhat familiar with them, but there are quite a few. Any suggestions are helpful.
  16. I'm interested in any and every field of research. I would be interested in researching products, services, and anything else that would help benefit a company, just as an example. I'm assuming research positions are pretty competitive and I don't have any experience. I'm hoping my Masters Degree will be sufficient and will gain me a research position with a larger company somewhere.
  17. I am currently enrolled in an online Master's program in Sociology. Once I graduate with my degree, I am interested in research, data collection/analysis, and statistics. I am hoping to work with a large company conducting research and analyzing my findings. There are a few required courses within the program that will give me more information about my career interests, but I'm wondering about research options with a Master's degree. Will I be required to collect data on my own and then analyze it or will I be provided data and then asked to analyze it? I'm just curious which options are most popular. I'm assuming it depends on each company. I just completed the required research methods course within my program and I'm curious how I will be conducting research and collecting data. Will I be sending out surveys or calling individuals to participate in a survey? I am very interested in Sociology as a whole, but most importantly, research. I have a BS degree in another field, so I am new to this major and area of study. Is there anything else I should know about data collection and research? Any tips or suggestions? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  18. Sorry to hear your sister wasn't being very understanding or supportive of your decisions. Random and not important, but you brought back a memory to me. I used to have a NeoPets account and forgot about it. You just reminded me of it. Obviously, it's for children, but it's a pretty good site. There is quite a bit to do there! Hope everything else is going well. :o)
  19. Thanks for the recommendation, but I was looking for online Masters programs. And I'm not Christian, so I would not attend this university. And there's no way I'm paying $28,000 for the program. No way. Thanks though.
  20. I definitely dont have that full of a day as you do. Ill be working during the day and then coming home for dinner and studies. Im starting an online accelerated masters program in sociology next week. Most, actually probably all, of my time will go towards working and studies. I received the syllabus a little early for the first class Im taking and the course looks very heavy with reading. I have the same questions as you do. How much time do I need for each section of reading and how much time should I have to prepare for the exams? I will need to read chapters in the textbook, chapters in a reader (extra material out together by the professor), read articles, watch videos, and watch lectures. Im just afraid there will be so much reading and not enough time to get through it and study for exams. Also, would you recommend that I take detailed notes for each section of material? Im just trying to determine the best way to read everything and study the material. Class officially starts next Thurs the 17th. In response to your question @rheya19, Im sure how to time block. Starting graduate school, I should know but Im just unsure. Any help from anyone is appreciated.
  21. @Comparativist, why the bad reputation on my post? I am worried about not having experience and just thought I would ask...
  22. I am starting a masters program in Sociology in just a few weeks. Once I receive my MA degree, I would like to go into the data analysis/statistics field. I have been looking for data analysis positions to view the requirements and what the jobs entails. I have noticed most positions require several years experience. I am new to this field and do not have any experience. Would submitting a cover letter with my skills and abilities be enough to become employed without experience? I would like to work in the field now while completing my degree so that I can gain experience, but it seems impossible being able to gain experience without having any to start with. Im somewhat worried that I wont be able to get a data analyst job once I receive my degree because I dont have the required experience. Please help!! Im worried....
  23. @LadyScientist I tried sending you a message, but it won't let me. Just wanted to say hello. Haven't heard from you in awhile.
  24. Thanks for the responses everyone. They have been very helpful, so far. I appreciate it. @avflinsch, I have never heard of Rocketbook pads, so I had to google it. This, by far, seems like the best invention ever. I watched the video on the Rocketbook website and am not too excited about scanning or uploading my notes to a cloud file, but I can find another way to save everything. This concept is pretty awesome. How do you like using these? Thanks again everyone.
  25. I normally prefer to take notes in a spiral notebook and have one for each course. That way, all of the course notes are together and are separated by each class. Once I completed by undergrad degree, I now have quite a stack of spiral notebooks. I usually don't prefer loose-leaf paper in a 3 ring binder because, even with tabs, it's hard to separate notes for each course. And once the pages are turned several times, they begin to tear and fall out. I'm starting an online Masters program in August, so there won't be too many lectures (I don't think) to take notes from. I'll mostly be taking my own notes. I'm curious, how does everyone prefer to take course notes? I'm trying to determine the best, convenient way, to take notes. Let me know! And now, another random question for everyone. Walking through stores within the past week, I've seen all of the school supplies presented in preparation for all of the kiddos going back to school in the fall. I always looked forward to shopping for new clothes, a brand new backpack, and new school supplies when I was younger. Now that I'm starting graduate school this fall, seeing all of these supplies makes me want to go school shopping again. I'm starting an online program this fall, so I don't really need to buy new clothes or a new backpack. I may plan on taking notes in individual spiral notebooks for each class, so I'll grab a few of those. I can't think of any other supplies I really need, but I love school shopping! Can anyone recommend any school supply must-haves? Or tell me about your favorite supplies. What should I get?
