  1. Hello! I have a Bachelors degree in Speech pathology, but have been looking into Masters programs in Sociology. I took an Intro to Sociology course and loved it. That was the only Sociology course I got a chance to take and unfortunately, I don't have a large background in the field. The good thing about Sociology programs is they don't require GRE scores (big yay!) and you don't need to have a background in the field. I actually applied to a few graduate programs in Sociology just a couple of days ago. Waiting to get more information about my application. Anyway...I'm not too sure about specific job opportunities for someone with a Bachelors degree in Sociology, but I know there are a variety of fields you can go into. The ones I'm most interested in are teaching sociology at a university level (Masters degree required), working in a healthcare facility (hospital or rehab), and working within the community. Since I don't have a Bachelors degree in the field and I don't know too much about it, I did a google search and looked for more information about Sociology. There isn't very much information out there based on my google searches. The only somewhat decent website I found is www.asanet.org. It's a pretty good website that gives good information about Sociology. You may find more information about Forensic Psych there. I think that would be a pretty good field to go into, especially since you like crimes and criminals. And the pay should be pretty good too. Finally, you could always contact a counselor or academic advisor within the sociology department at your university (and other institutions too) and ask them more about the major and job opportunities available. Okay, it seems like I'm rambling a bit, but I do hope this information helps. I'm just as unsure as you are about the field, but I'm sure there are plenty of resources out there. We just need to research and find them. Keep in touch and we can continue discussing Sociology programs if you wish. Good luck! :o)
  2. Thanks for this information, it really helps. I contacted an advisor within the speech pathology program at NYU and he wasn't sure about the time zone differences, so I'm glad I have a little more information about that now. What online masters program did you get accepted to? I'm just curious to see how popular each online program is and how big the cohorts are. Are they online graduate courses somewhat similar to online undergrad courses? I took an online undergrad course and we were required to read assigned chapter(s) and post on discussion boards. We were able to take exams and quizzes at our own pace and have them completed by the due dates. I didn't know if it would be different with less reading and more writing papers in preparation for research or how they were structured. Just determining what to look forward to. Keep in touch!
  3. I was debating about whether or not to submit an application to the online speech pathology graduate program at NYU since I have a couple of questions. Can anyone who applied to the program send me a message and I can ask you a few questions and your opinions about the program? Please PM me! Just to let anyone who has not applied yet - In case you haven't already found out from the website, if you attend one of the online webinars and then submit your application (within 2 weeks of the webinar date), NYU will waive the crazy, expensive application fee. I was looking over the website and found that information on the events page. :o)
  4. Hi everyone! I've been thinking of random questions about online graduate programs. I am currently on the west coast and am interested in applying to a few schools on the east coast. I'm curious about the time difference and how that will affect logging into courses at particular times, submitting assignments, and completing exams by the due dates. I'm assuming I would need to submit everything three hours before the due dates since I'm three hours behind the east coast? If anyone knows anything about this, let me know. I contacted a counselor from NYU - Steinhardt and he believes I would need to submit everything earlier, but he doesn't know for sure. I'm not sure how else to find out. Please let me know if anyone knows anything!
  5. Hello! I'm not looking for a roommate, but I'm curious about your stats since you were accepted. I applied for Spring 2016 and was placed on the waitlist and never got called. I re-applied for Spring 2017, with the same exact stats, and was denied. I don't get it. So I'm curious to find out the stats of those that got accepted for 2017. I'm somewhat annoyed and think i got denied for other reasons, but I'm not sure why and I probably won't ever find out. :o(
  6. Hi all, I have a random question for everyone relating to NYU. What are some of the unique perspective, skill sets, or life experiences you described in required essay #1? I'm trying to get some ideas, so I can think of something to use when writing this essay. I can't think of any specific life experiences, so I was thinking about organization as a skill set, but not sure this is a good one. I'm trying to think of something better. Let me know what you chose and it will give me an idea to choose my 'topic'. Thanks!
  7. Can anyone give me suggestions as a 'topic' for this essay prompt? I don't really have any life experiences that I can think of, and I'm not sure what to write about. I am very organized and I was thinking of using organization as my skill set, but I figured I could come up with something better. What do you think I should use? Essay should be one page maximum, double-spaced. Describe a unique perspective or skill set you have or a life experience. Articulate how it might benefit your potential classmates, enhance discourse in the classroom, and/or contribute to the ________ communicative sciences and disorders community. I appreciate the help!
  8. I'm still somewhat interested in applying to this program. Does anyone know if most 'seats' have filled already, or is it possible I may still be accepted? I waited a little longer than I had hoped, but I wanted to apply to a few others and was a little hesitant about this one. I just called NYU steinhard to ask a few questions, but was on hold way too long, so I hung up. Let me know! I'll finish working on my application if there still may be a chance.
  9. Ohh. Interesting. What school is this? I've called a few universities asking about their requirements (GRE and GPA) and was told to just apply. They needed to see my application before telling me whether or not I would get denied.
  10. What universities are you interested in applying to and what are their GRE requirements? I know some schools have a minimum required score, some have a range you can fall into, and some don't have a specific requirement. Those without the requirement normally don't focus on GRE scores; instead they look at GPA, your personal statement, and recommendation letters. You could always apply and see if you get accepted with strong application materials. You never know!
  11. You haven't gotten accepted into ENMU yet? You're just taking a course as a non-degree student? How long is the course? The ones I'm looking into are 7.5 weeks each. That's a quick course for an online graduate program. It's going to be tough! Oooh thanks. Ill check that out. Is it an online program do you know? I need a distance education program as I need to continue working full time, but I will look into it.
  12. Oh wow. That's a lot!! One class in state for me looks like it will be 1,500. That's crazy! Haha. Where are you taking this class at if you don't mind me asking? That's pretty cheap compared to mine. Keep in touch!
  13. I was going to take sociology courses as a non degree student and then apply to MA programs in sociology. I'm pretty sure they're tough. I'm expecting that. But it will be online, so that will help. I can log into the course and complete assignments/exams by the due dates at my convenience. I'm not doing any 'live' programs. I have a question for ya...How are you paying for the non degree courses? I was told financial aid doesn't apply and I'm not sure if I can get a grant or not, but it looks like I may have to find a way to pay for these courses. :o(
  14. Thanks. I'm trying to keep positive. I'm looking into taking a few grad classes as a non degree seeking student within a Sociology program. Are you taking an SLP course as a non degree? Is there anything negative about taking courses as a non-degree seeking student? I can take a couple of courses and then apply them to the program once I'm accepted. It sounds like a good idea to me, but I'm not too sure yet. Let me know what you think and if there is anything else I may need to know.
  15. I wasn't accepted at all. I was waitlisted for 2015 and denied for 2016. It's crap. I'm bummed. :o(
  16. I was placed on the wait list last Spring. I applied again with the same stats (GRE scores, GPA, and SOP) and I didn't get accepted. There were several reasons listed on the letter that says denial was given for one or more reasons and none of these apply to me, so I'm not sure why I didn't get accepted. I can't get an answer. Before I re-applied, I was told there wouldn't be any more on the waitlist, but I guess there is. I'm just somewhat annoyed with ENMU. It just seems like a mess. And I was originally told I would have a letter by Oct 1st. I just received the letter a few days ago (2 weeks later).
  17. I believe it's the same, but who knows. The information I received in my letter is different than what I was told.
  18. Hello everyone, I'm interested in applying to MA programs in Sociology. I took an intro to Sociology course years ago and found it very interesting. Unfortunately, my BS degree is in another field, so I don't have a strong Sociology background. I'm interested in a few areas of Sociology (medical, education, government, and within the community) but I don't really know much about the field. I looked over the ASA website, but it doesn't seem to be too helpful. Does anyone know of any resources (books, PDF's, websites, etc) that I can access to gain more information about the field? I'm aware of some of the areas individuals with a MA in sociology can work in, but I'm not exactly sure what the job entails. I know I can contact advisors from the universities I'm interested in, but they are most helpful with the program and not Sociology in general. I'm somewhat surprised there doesn't seem to be that many resources available, from what I can find. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  19. Which online programs are you waiting to hear from?
  20. Hello everyone, Has anyone applied to the ASU online MA program in Sociology? I'm really interested in this program, but have a slightly lower GPA than required. I'm aware I can take up to 9 credits of required coursework as a non-degree seeking student, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and then apply as a degree seeking student. I'm also curious about this option and am wondering if anyone has done this and then applied to the program? It looks like a great program and only 30 total credits are required for the degree. Hope to hear from you!!
  21. I kind of researched the program a bit, but after getting pushed around and noticing the tuition costs, I haven't looked more into it. Isn't there an early Spring start date (January)? I may apply and see it I get accepted. I'm just afraid the live program may not work out for me. Ahh. What to do, what to do.
  22. Although I contacted NYU - Steinhardt and spoke with a few people from the department who seemed pushy and somewhat rude, would everyone recommend that I still apply to the program? I also found out that it's a 'live' program which doesn't really work for me. I could make it work, but I am somewhat worried that it may be too difficult for me since I will be working full time while in grad school. Should I contact them again to see if I should apply? I'm assuming they are trying to recruit students to their new program, so they probably will suggest that I apply. The tuition is very expensive, yet another factor turning me away from applying. Can anyone give me suggestions? Is it very competitive? Let me know what everyone thinks. I'm stuck.
  23. I'm just curious if anyone else is going crazy waiting for acceptance letters? I'm still waiting to receive letters from two online programs. I'm not sure If the online programs take longer than normal or if that doesn't make a difference. I was originally told October 1st, and I'm still waiting. I know there are several applications and required materials to go through for each student, but it should not take this long. I'm tired of waiting! I'm going to check the mail today and hopefully there is something there. **just keep waiting. just keep waiting...
  24. My application deadlines were July 1st. I think 14 weeks or so should be plenty of time. And I was told I would receive acceptance letters by Oct. 1st. Here it is the 17th and I'm still waiting. Ahhh.....
