SOP Suggestions and Advice
speechfan222 replied to speechfan222's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
Hi! I just saw your comment on this post right now. Sometimes I receive notifications about new comments posted under my comments and sometimes I don't. Do you have any idea why that is? There is no information about word count or font size. It just says it has to be between 4 and 5 pages long. I haven't clarified it with somebody yet, but I found it under the requirements for graduate applications. I was surprised at the length too. There are a few points that we must address and I'm including those. Now just having a hard time expanding on them and including more information to meet the page length. Any suggestions for me? -
I am interested in a MA Sociology program. I'm working on the graduate application essay now for an online program. Is this a bad idea? :o(

GRE Question for Speech Path at NOVA Southeastern
speechfan222 replied to rwomack00's question in Questions and Answers
TSU is live as well? I have been speaking with somebody from TSU's Speech Pathology Dept and I'm aware that it's not a live online program. Why don't the schools give detailed information whether they're live or not in the program description? :/ -
I'm currently working on my SOP for Sociology graduate programs. I have a few professional goals that I will include and describe, but I'm not sure what other information to add to it. The SOP I'm working on needs to be between four and five pages in length. There are a few required points that I have to include and I will elaborate on them as much as I can, but I'm not sure what else to add to make it long enough. Can anyone give me suggestions or other things to include in my SOP? Thanks!

GRE Question for Speech Path at NOVA Southeastern
speechfan222 replied to rwomack00's question in Questions and Answers
I have not heard much about the NOVA program. I didn't even know NYU had the live online courses. And, I just saw this post. Sometimes I get notifications when comments are made in response to my comments and sometimes I don't. I usually have to look through the threads I commented on to see if there are any new comments. Do you have any idea why I don't receive notifications for every thread? Weird. Check out that list on the ASHA website and let me know what other online programs you may consider. I'm curious. Are you planning on starting in the Spring or Fall semester? -
Ahhh okay. Finally somebody who knows. I didn't want to call again and bother them too much. Do you know if we will receive letters even if we're not accepted?

GRE Question for Speech Path at NOVA Southeastern
speechfan222 replied to rwomack00's question in Questions and Answers
Yeah, there are a few others. The ASHA website actually has a PDF of all graduate speech pathology programs and which ones offer online programs. I printed it out and researched each one of them. I applied to a few of them already including Tennessee State University and Eastern New Mexico University. NYU has a brand new online speech pathology program, but I just found out today that the courses are 'live' online. You have to log in at a specific time and listen to a lecture rather than reading powerpoint slides and taking exams whenever you prefer. That program doesn't work for me, so I'm not going to apply to NYU. And it's so expensive!! -
Don't worry. It's always good to get all of the information I can. This is really good to know. I appreciate it. The program description says it's not like any other online program, but it doesn't mention anything about 'attending' class live and interacting with the professor in real time. The website description should definitely mention this. I currently work full time, and I doubt I can 'attend' live as a requirement. I thought it would be as you described - viewing powerpoints and taking tests before a specific date. Your friend is considering this program. How did he/she find out about this detailed information? I may not even apply now if it's 'live'. :o(

Day Planners - The only way I can keep everything organized
speechfan222 posted a topic in The Lobby
This is a very random topic, but once I get accepted into graduate school, things are going to be crazy and I'll be keeping pretty busy. The only way I kept track of assignments, due dates, and other non school related events and appointments is with a planner. I normally use a basic planner, but it seems kind of boring. I don't want it to get too busy (too hard to keep track of everything), but I need one that's more exciting and 'fun'. Does anyone use a planner for school and other things? What type/brand do you use? What kind of planner do you prefer? -
I have emailed someone from the admissions department a few times. He actually called me and left a voicemail and wanted me to let him know of good specific times that would be good for him to explain the program in detail for me. I'm on the west coast and while working, it's sometimes hard to get a chance to talk to him. Normally when I get a chance, it's too late and he's already gone for the day. Would you suggest that I make time to speak with an admission counselor to determine whether I should apply or not. It looks like a pretty good program, but I'm sure it's very competitive and my stats aren't the greatest. :o( And, NYU is expensive!

I'm applying for Spring 2017, for now. I'll see how that goes and then I may or may not apply for the fall. How should I limit the amount of work I do per application when it requires a million things plus the application? Haha. Let me knowwww...

I am interested in applying to this program. I looked over all of the program requirements and required courses. I forgot to look at the tuition costs. I almost fell over when I noticed the cost of tuition. I guess NYU is a private university? I didn't realize that right away... I'm surprised that this program requires a personal statement and two other essays, but I still want to submit an application. My stats are: GPA 2.9 Quant: 148 Verbal: 145 Writing: 4.0 I know my stats aren't very good and so far, NYU seems like the most competitive and difficult, but I may apply anyway. I want to submit my application by the priority deadline so I can save 30.00 on the application fee. Let me know what everyone thinks about this program and whether or not I should apply.

Hello everyone! I took an Intro to Sociology course (Sociology 101) years ago when I completed my Associates Degree and really enjoyed the course. I received my Bachelors in Speech Pathology and have applied to a few Masters programs in Speech. Since I enjoyed Sociology so much, I want to apply to a few online sociology graduate programs. I know a sociology background isn't required, but I'm wondering.... Is it a bad idea to apply to sociology graduate programs without a background in the area? I also don't have any clinical experience in this area either. I did a google search for online sociology programs. I found ASU, University of Alabama - Birmingham, and University of the Rockies. Does anyone know of any other online programs I can look into and submit an application?
-
I don't know how everyone else feels, but I've already applied to a few universities and going to apply to several more. The whole application process is time consuming - asking professors for letters of rec, requesting transcripts and GRE scores, writing personal statements and essays, filling out application after application with the same information. It's so overwhelming and my brain is tired. I just want to relax on the couch with a good book. I'm a book worm and haven't been reading as much as I'd like to. I miss reading novels. Thanks graduate school, I appreciate it.

GRE Question for Speech Path at NOVA Southeastern
speechfan222 replied to rwomack00's question in Questions and Answers
I've applied to several online speech pathology and sociology programs, and two of the sociology programs don't require GRE scores. I had a few questions about application information. When I asked them, I also asked about GRE scores - just to make sure they aren't required. I just wanted to be sure. I would contact the university just to be sure. That way your application isn't incomplete just in case they are required but aren't listed as a requirement. Is this NOVA Southeastern University that you applied to? Are you applying to the online program? -
Am I at the wrong grad school? Please help.
speechfan222 replied to olv_cpx_plag_mt's topic in Officially Grads
This seems like a tough situation. I don't have any suggestions unfortunately. But I was curious, how did you get the GRE waived? A few universities I applied to require the GRE without any exceptions. -
I got a call from Sandy this morning. I got really excited when I saw the caller ID location. She called to tell me that she has all of my required materials and we will be receiving notification by October 1st. I appreciate her calling, but I can log into my account and see that she has all of the required materials. Did she call you too?
-
*sighhh. okay. I can't believe they still haven't made a decision yet. Oct 1st is in 10 days.
-
Ahh. She answered your call (or called you back). That's awesome! I haven't heard from her yet. I was told we were going to receive notification letters by October 1st...and they haven't made a decision yet? Did she mention if it will still be Oct 1st?

Hello, I have not received my masters degree or taken the Praxis yet. I applied to several online programs and just waiting for acceptance letters. Which school(s) did you get accepted to? I'm curious as I'm still waiting to hear from them. Are you taking them online or in person?
