  1. Thanks for this information. It definitely helps! I have a Bachelors degree in another field, but am also very interested in Sociology. Unfortunately, I don't have a large background in this field. Do I need to figure out what I want to research on during my graduate studies, or do you mean research as a profession? Also, do you know of any helpful resources where I can get more information about Sociology and professions within the field? I have looked over the ASA website and it doesn't seem to be much help. I also did a google search looking for more information and surprisingly, there isn't much available online. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it! I feel like a lost puppy in a large park sometimes. :o(
  2. I'm applying to Masters. I didn't think I needed to do any 'extra' things since I'm entering an MA program. Is reviewing my textbook still a crazy idea?
  3. I don't have a proposed project, no. I am interested in the field of Sociology, but don't know much about the details or what graduate school will require - aside from coursework. Is a proposed project required of graduate school? What does it require and how do I begin?
  4. Hi everyone, I'm finished with my grad school applications and now just waiting for acceptance letters. I applied to Sociology graduate programs at several universities. The only Sociology course I have a background in is an intro course (Sociology 101) which I took years ago. I have a 'nerdy' question for everyone - Should I pull my Sociology 101 textbook from the shelf and start reviewing it again as a preparation for grad school Sociology courses? Or, will it not make a difference since grad school courses are more advanced and I may not need to know information from an intro course? If I should break out the textbook and review, should I create an outline for each chapter? Should I write a basic summary of the chapter? Just make notes on important points? Let me know what everyone thinks!!
  5. Which west coast program are you enrolled in? That's good to know, thanks. Right now, for me, assignments and exams would be due two hours before the due date. Seems like of confusing, but I'm sure I would get used to it after awhile. Thanks for the info!
  6. I'm interested in online masters degree programs in Sociology. I found a medical sociology program at University of the Rockies. It's accredited and looks pretty interesting. Does anyone know anything about this program? Has anyone applied to it or currently taking courses within the program? The minimum required GPA is 2.0, GRE scores are not needed, and the university does not require recommendation letters or a personal statement. Please let me know if anyone knows anything about this program!
  7. I still follow this post every once in awhile. I need to read more non fiction, especially books relating to my major and area of interest, but I really enjoy fiction. Im currently reading Straight Man by Richard Russo now. Hes great. Love his works.
  8. Congrats!! What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I submitted an application and was curious to see how competitive they are.
  9. I know a lot of universities require GRE scores as a way to lower the amount of students accepted into programs. They don't accept students with lower scores just because they have a limited number of seats and can't accept everyone. I think it's very unfair for that reason. Of course, I'm sure other schools want to see the scores for performance and ability to do well within their graduate program. I've heard the writing portion of the GRE is the most important since most programs, especially with research, are writing intensive. I suppose the verbal section would be important too when writing, but I think the writing section is most important. And, I think most schools don't even care about your math score - unless you're applying to mathematics or engineering programs or something. If there are other schools you're interested in that don't require the GRE, I would apply to those and kind of forget about the one program that does require it. If you really want to apply to Dalhousie, you could study for the GRE, take the exam and see how you do, and then apply. If not, I wouldn't worry about it. It's very expensive and requires a lot of study time. Seems like quite a bit just for one school. If you decide to take it, you could always research other schools and apply to more of them. That way you can send your scores to several universities instead of just one. I think the GRE is ridiculous. It didn't used to be required, why is it now? We all received a Bachelors degree. We can do math, we know our vocab, and we're capable of writing. I think it's crazy. But, I do have to admit - some of the questions were tough. By the way, I applied to several online SLP programs too. I haven't heard of any of the schools you're applying to. Keep in touch and good luck! :o)
  10. I've never been in this situation, but as you probably know, I don't think that would be acceptable. Does she want you to write it, give it back, and she will submit as if she wrote it for you? Hmm. This is interesting. I would try and see if other references can write a letter for you instead.
  11. Hello, I have a question for everyone about an online Sociology graduate program. I researched several online graduate programs in Sociology and I found with interesting application requirements. University of the Rockies only requires an application and proof that Bachelors degree was received. They don't require GRE scores, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, or an application fee. I made sure this is a reliable university and it is accredited. I was just surprised that they don't require documents that most universities require and acceptance notification is pretty quick. Does anyone know anything about this program? Is it reliable and a good idea? I may just submit an application anyway (it's free!) and see what happens. A guidance counselor also informed me that I would get accepted within a day or so of applying. Interesting... Let me know everyone!
  12. Is anyone attending the online webinar later today? I'm interested and registered for it last week. I have not received an email with more information and am trying to get ahold of them now to let them know. When I registered, it said I would receive an email a few days before the webinar date. I haven't received anything yet. I really want to attend this webinar, but not sure how to log in or access it. Please help!!!???
  13. I don't think there is, no. The website doesn't list any other dates. I think tomorrow is the only one. I'm going to attend tomorrows while at work and have the fee waived. You should attend tomorrows too! I spoke with someone in the department a few times with several questions and he didn't even tell me about getting the fee waived with a webinar. I'm glad I found out myself! What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I don't think the program is too competitive, but want to see how good my chances of getting accepted might be.
  14. It's definitely not too late. As @bioarch_fan said, some deadlines aren't until next semester. Start working on gathering all of your application materials now and then submit them all together. I think that makes the crazy process a little easier. Just curious, I see several people posting about POI's. What in the world does this mean? Are they related to LOR's (letters of recommendations)?
  15. I'm interested in SLP programs and have already applied to a few. Which universities or programs have you found that are medically based? I didn't know there was a medical program at all. I know you can work in a medical setting (hospital or rehab) with a Masters in Speech Pathology, but didn't know about a medically based SLP program. Are these medical-related courses?
  16. I'm curious about this program too. I'm interested in applying and have been in contact with someone in the department. She's very helpful answering all of my questions. I've never heard of this university and wasn't too sure about it. The website looked a bit strange to me, but it is accredited and seems reliable. @OaklandsfutureLCSW What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I'm curious to see how competitive they might be. I don't want to ask anyone about it and it there isn't information on the website. @Mommy2boox2 What are your stats if you don't mind me asking either? I want to see how competitive it is. @grad_school_granny Did you decide to apply to the program? What does everyone think?
  17. I already applied to TSU and ENMU. I'm only applying to schools with an online option, so I'm kind of limited to the amount available. I'm working on submitting more applications in another field. I'm hoping to get accepted soon. I'm SO tired of working on applications, paying all of the crazy fees, and waiting for responses. Ready to be done!
  18. I don't think a 4th LOR would be a bad idea. As you said, it's always best to have an extra one just in case you aren't able to get 3 from the other recommenders. I only submitted the required LOR's needed for each application, but I have a few extras just in case. I did get one from my boss as well. I figured it would be a good idea. I noticed you're applying to SLP programs. I'm applying to the same as well. Which programs are you applying to?
  19. That's definitely true. I didn't think of that. I was only thinking about all of the money spent on graduate applications and required documents all together. It just adds up! I definitely agree that we should be able to attach unofficial transcripts and GRE scores. Then if we are accepted, to send official documents to the university. I definitely agree with that. Some of the applications for my major (Speech Pathology) are through CSDCAS which is another system that charges even more for application fees. It's crazy!
  20. The scores given are in an unoffical report - it's possible there may be a variance from the unofficial and official scores. I would contact ETS to make sure.
  21. Has anyone applied to or attending Sam Houston State University? I'm interested in their online MA program in Sociology. I researched the university and it is accredited, but their website looks 'different'. They also require GRE scores and I've found that other online Sociology programs don't require these scores. I'm interested in applying to this program, but want to hear from others about it. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
  22. Too dang much, that's for sure. A range of $35, 50, or 75 per application fee, $25 to send GRE scores for each, and $10 to send undergrad transcripts. I've only submitted 4 applications so far, but I'm working on more. I think the application fees are ridiculous. We're going to pay plenty of money for tuition (and other fees required with tuition costs), why in the world do we need to pay to have somebody read our application? I know the GRE scores need to be official and sent from the testing company, but why do they charge $25 per institution when they know students are applying to several at a time? We paid enough to take the test, don't charge $25 just to send my scores. Alright. I'm done venting. The fees are just ridiculous. I think they should be waived for everyone. :o)
  23. Ahh thats good to know. I was just curious about group work and how it's completed within an online program. Thanks for the stats. That helps a little too. Is the UWEC interview in person? I'm still applying to programs hoping I get accepted. It seems like there are A LOT of people applying to speech pathology programs for the fall 2017 semester. It's crazy!
  24. How do you complete project work for an online class? I'm assuming to communicate with classmates and agree on a time to 'meet' online together? I'm curious how the different types of assignments work since you don't work with classmates face-to-face. What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I'm curious to see how competitive UWEC is.
