  1. I definitely know what you mean. It was so stressful to complete application and get them all submitted with required documents. Now that everything has been submitted, it's still stressful to have to wait for acceptance letters. I noticed you're a sociology major. I'm interested in the field too and applied to a few online sociology programs. I don't have a Bachelors degree in Sociology, but am very interested in it. I have been researching sociology job options and opportunities with a masters degree in this field. Do you know where most Sociologists would/can work with a MA/MS in Sociology and what the job requirements are? I found a few things, but I'm sure there are several more. I'm very interested in this field, but am still learning more about job placement and opportunities once I have my Masters degree. Let me know!!
  2. I am interested in graduate programs in Sociology and going to make a decision to attend a program for Spring 2017. I don't have a Bachelors in the field and although I've only taken an Intro to Sociology course, I find it very interesting. I've heard that research methods and social science statistics are pretty tough. I have taken a statistics course before, but it's not related to the social sciences. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations I can do, so that I do well in these courses? Besides putting a lot of time into studying and keeping a focus, what else can I do? I've also done some research on job opportunities for those with an MA in Sociology. I would be interested in working in a hospital setting or teaching Sociology. I've heard that some universities allow an individual with an MS gain a teaching position, while other universities require a PhD so that they can also conduct research. There are a few other positions I would be interested in, but I'm sure there are several opportunities I'm not familiar with. Does anyone know any specific job positions I could obtain with an MS/MA in Sociology? If anyone already has a Masters in Sociology and are working in the field, what is your job title and what does it require? Let me know! Finally, a random question for everyone. Does anyone know of any good forums for Sociology (mainly) students? I know the ASA website has one, but I don't want to pay any fees right now. I did a google search for some, but a few don't look valid or decent. Please let me know so I can ask some more crazy questions about Sociology. Thanks in advance!
  3. This is a very good idea. I may definitely have to try it. I'm not very crafty or creative, so I'm kinda hesitant about the do-it-yourself planners, but I may try this one anyway. I currently have a very cheap planner that I'm using that ends around the middle of March. I don't know if I want to continue using it up or start a new one with the new year. I know some planners/calendars don't start right in January, but I may start a new one anyway. Thanks for this advice. By the way, I noticed your profile says AZ. I'm from AZ too! Where in AZ are you? You can message me if you don't want to post it here.
  4. I am interested in graduate programs in Sociology, but don't have much of a background or a Bachelors in the field. One of the programs I'm interested in requires students without a Sociology background to take two courses as pre-requisites and then apply to the program. I'm not worried about the two prereq courses, but I'm just hoping I get accepted into the program afterwards. Otherwise the prereqs I take will be a 'waste'. I've already been in contact with an advisor within the program. I was told everyone who takes the prereqs gets accepted into the program, but of course I don't know their stats and how their applications compare to mine. What does everyone think of this program option/requirement? Please let me know good and bad things! Also, the program can be completed faster than most graduate programs. This is both a good and bad thing. I will receive my degree and gain employment faster, but the courses are also completed faster. Most of the courses are only 7.5 weeks long. I will take one prereq course and then 7.5 weeks later, I will take the other one. And once I get into the program, all of the courses will be this same length. Is this something to worry about for graduate school? I'm just hoping the courses aren't 'harder' than a normal semester-long course. I'm really thinking about this program and wanting to make my decision. Please let me know what you think. Any input, suggestions, and opinions are appreciated.
  5. I have applied to several grad programs that offer students two different options within their graduate studies. I've done a little research, but not sure which option to choose. I know the best decision is to choose the thesis option if I decide to further my studies and receive my PhD, but I'm not 100% sure I want to receive my PhD. I know a thesis looks great on a resume, but I'm just not sure what option to take. I have some time to decide, but I'm curious to see what everyone thinks. What are the pros and cons of each option? How did you decide which option to choose? Please let me know!
  6. Has anyone else received an admission decision this week? I was told everyone would have a decision by the end of the week. I'm still waiting...
  7. Alright. I will let ya know. Cross your fingers for me! Haha. What part of town are you in and where are you working at? If you don't want to post it here, message me. Or if you don't want to say, it's okay. Just curious. It's a small world!!
  8. It's a live program, so we would have to log in at a specific time on certain days. No way!! Me too!! Good 'ol Tucson. That's funny!!
  9. @amsullivan, I noticed you're from AZ. Me too. What city are you in?
  10. Oh that's good. I'm working Mon-Fri and am off weekends. If I have to log in during work, I should be able to. I just can't be sure as I don't know how busy it could get. Brett informed me that we would need to log in around 6-7pm my time. I was surprised it would be that late since its 8-9pm on the east coast. I didn't think there were live classes that late, but I suppose so. I'm hoping it will all work out and I get accepted. Getting VERY nervous and don't know much longer I can wait. Ahhhhhh!!
  11. That's a good idea. I submitted mine a little earlier since I didn't know how long it would take to process. I didn't know it would take almost 2 months for an admissions decision from NYU either. I'm pretty excited about this program even though it's a 'live' program. I currently work full time (why I chose an online program) and live on the west coast, so I'm a bit worried about the time zone differences and having to log in at a specific time (maybe during work hours). I informed Brett about this information and he says it should be fine, so I decided to apply. If I get accepted, I really hope it's not too 'much' having to log in at a specific time and having to get used to the time difference for assignments/test deadlines.
  12. Ahh okay. That's good to know. Just curious, did you apply for financial aid? If so, did you get more information about it once you got your acceptance? I applied for and am hoping if I get accepted that it gets approved too. The tuition is ridiculously expensive!! There's no way I'm paying for it myself.
  13. How long did it take you to receive a decision? I've been speaking with Brett. I suppose he's my assigned advisor. He's very helpful, but the decision is taking forever! I can't wait anymore!
  14. Congrats!!! I'm still waiting to hear from NYU. I contacted the advisor earlier this morning and he said due to the large amount of applications they processed, I should have a final decision by next Monday, the 19th. Now I'm really nervous since you already got an answer and I'm still waiting. I'm really hoping I get accepted. My stats are pretty similar to yours, but I did 4.0 on the writing portion of the GRE. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for good news. How long ago did you apply? I guess that doesn't matter too much. I suppose they just processed your application before mine. I hope I get in!
  15. I am interested in an online Sociology program at a university, but am required to take two to three courses as a non-degree student before applying to the program. Once they are completed, I can apply to the graduate program and these two classes will count towards course requirements. I really want to consider this program since it's in-state and much cheaper. As a non-degree student, I won't qualify for financial aid, so I would be paying for classes myself. The in-state tuition is very helpful. I'm only somewhat worried that I may not get accepted into the program (for whatever reason) and then the two courses I took would go to waste. Should I consider this option, submit an application, and hope I get accepted? Let me know what you think. Good idea or bad idea?
  16. Has anyone applied to and/or gotten accepted into the University of the Rockies? I submitted an application about a month ago and was accepted today to the Online Masters program in Sociology. I've heard a few good things about this University, but not as familiar with it as I am with others. I checked that it is accredited and it seems like a reliable university. Does anyone know anything good or bad about this school? Please let me know!!
  17. I didn't even know there are SLP programs with a medical focus. I applied to a few traditional SLP online programs. I would be interested in applying to these, but I need programs that offer an online option. I don't believe any of these have that option. Does a Masters degree in SLP with a medical focus provide more job opportunities, or just a better chance at being an SLP in medical type setting? This is an interesting post. Thanks!
  18. I'm somewhat in the same boat as you are, but I don't have the experience and am definitely not fluent in Spanish. I spoke with somebody from the department the Thursday before Turkey Day. I was told I would hear back within two weeks or so. I hope they don't wait until right before Christmas. I just can't believe how long it takes to receive an answer from the department. I sure hope it's soon! What are your stats if you don't mind me asking?
  19. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. The holidays are crazy enough. NYU could make it a little better by telling us were accepted!!
  20. I can't believe we could get an SLPA certificate in just 12 months. I was considering that for experience, but it's actually 2.00 less than I'm making now as a certified pharmacy technician. So, I said forget about the experience. I'll stay at my current job and keep the extra 2.00/hr. I hope not having much experience isn't a bad thing for my application. I guess I'll have to see. I thought NYU would be pretty competitive, so I was hesitant about applying, but I decided to anyway. I'm really hoping we both get in. Haha. I just laughed out loud! I saw a post the other day. Somebody with a GPA of 3.9 said it was low and they were worried about getting accepted. Oh please. It's nearly perfect. Shush! Hahaha. When did you submit your application to NYU? I submitted mine about three weeks ago. I got a voicemail message this morning saying that all documents including recommendation letters were received and my application was sent to the graduate committee for decision. I'm just crossing my fingers. Hoping I get in. I hope WE get in! Good luck and Happy Turkey Day!!
  21. I've heard that a few people have applied with 'lower' GPAs and decent GRE scores and were accepted. That made me feel a little better, so I decided to apply. I applied for the Spring 2017 semester. My GRE is okay, but my scores weren't the greatest. I spoke with somebody from the Speech department on Monday and I was told it would take about 3 weeks to receive a decision. Based on the comment above, I don't think it will take that long. Sometimes it seemed like the department was pushy since they preferred to call me about my application rather than respond to my questions by email, but they have been very helpful. It's just been difficult to answer their calls since I'm on the west coast, am two hours behind, and at work when they call. But the advisor is very helpful. The only think I'm somewhat worried about is financial aid. I was told we won't receive information about aid until we get accepted. I just don't want it to be too late to receive aid and be able to pay for tuition by the due date. I'm pretty sure you will get in. I'm trying to stay positive for myself and everyone else who applies. We should hear back from them hopefully next week after the holiday, or possibly the following week. I'm trying to stay positive though. Just keep waiting. Just keep waiting. We will get an early holiday present - we're getting accepted!
  22. Thanks, that helps a little. I just didn't want a course, or two, to mention a theory or somebody relatively important, to Sociology and then be confused because I don't remember what/who it's referring to. That helps. Thanks. Can you recommend anything else I do/don't do in preparation for graduate school?
  23. @macklin_b, have you heard anything about your application yet? My application and all required documents have been turned in. I was told today that my application will be sent to the admission committee for a final decision very soon. I will get admission information in about three weeks. That seems way too long just to get a decision. Has anyone else waited awhile for an admission decision? I really want to choose this program, but waiting three more weeks just for a decision is crazy!
  24. I applied to a few Sociology graduate programs and I'm curious what the best way to prepare for this program is. I don't have a Bachelors in Sociology and don't have a lot of experience within the field. I figured I could briefly review my Sociology 101 textbook to better prepare me for graduate courses, but then realized Sociology 101 is just an intro. I don't think it would be much of an advantage to read over an introductory course before graduate school. The information probably won't be too helpful since graduate school is much more advanced. What do you think? Should I just be organized and prepared to start courses or would reading over my intro textbook be of much help? What else should I do? Please let me know!
  25. What are some other things I can do to prepare for graduate courses especially because I don't have a large background in Sociology? Besides briefly reading over my Intro to Sociology textbook, I'm not sure how else I can prepare. Are there any specific courses that are a little harder than others that I could somehow prepare for? I heard research methods for Psychology is pretty tough. Is it the same for Sociology?
